Braiden McGregor Buzz????? [Marc-Gregor Campredon]

Fall Football Bits Has Special Teams Updates Comment Count

Alex.Drain August 25th, 2022 at 4:30 PM

Yesterday was the offense update to Fall Football Bits, here is the defense and special teams installment:

Defensive End

What we want to hear: Mike Morris has taken the next step to be a top notch EDGE defender, while the rotation at the weakside spot is still a thing because the options are all quality. Taylor Upshaw is ready for the senior year emergence, Derrick Moore, TJ Guy, and Braiden McGregor are breakout candidates, and Jaylen Harrell has found a little pass rush.

What we're hearing: Well, there's a new name in this room due to the arrival of Eyabi Anoma from UT-Martin (via Alabama and Houston), who enrolled in the university and joined the team last week. The early reporting confirmed that Biff Poggi did indeed play a role in routing Anoma to Michigan. A few players gave quotes on their early impressions of Anoma and so far, it doesn't seem that he has ruffled any feathers in the locker room. As for Anoma's role, the insider stories the night he committed made sure to say that he would be starting at the bottom of the depth chart. Since then, Balas said that playing time for Anoma is to be determined ($), while Henschke said the team is "pleased" with Anoma's athleticism and then produced the most outrageous piece of camp hype yet ($).

As for the rest of the positional group, we don't hear much about Mike Morris other than that he's good and is a leader *shrug*. Elsewhere, it's a revolving door of EDGE names. TJ Guy hasn't been featured much since he appeared in the last defensive update, but the newest rising name is Braiden McGregor. Steve Lorenz named his as a "legitimate contributor" ($), while Henschke noted McGregor as a standout in his own update, and Balas yesterday said that McGregor is "starting to come into his own as a pass rusher" ($). That same Balas piece notes that the EDGE battle will continue through September, but for now it seems like McGregor is on the rise.

Taylor Upshaw's name is still in the battle, but it mostly gets brought up because of his experience and leadership, not because he's suddenly on track to stardom. Derrick Moore is still a guy that the team is very excited about, with Lorenz also bringing up his name in the same article McGregor was in, while Balas used the term "freak athlete" to describe Moore ($). The consensus seems to be that Moore is climbing his way up the EDGE depth chart.

Nothing new on Jaylen Harrell, which feels somewhat bad, but this time I do want to mention Julius Welschof, because I omitted him on accident last time. The team is said to have high hopes for Welschof but that at the moment, it hasn't quite happened on the practice field yet ($).

What it means: Morris is starting at one EDGE spot, but he may rotate inside on passing downs. After that, it's likely going to be an open competition for the first half of the season to see who grabs the job. The first month in particular is not exactly a murderer's row of offensive lines, so it will give Jesse Minter and Mike Elston a chance to see who they like at this position. Upshaw is probably the nominal starter but if he is still the starter by mid-season, that's probably a bad sign. I'd guess that McGregor and Moore are the most likely to pull through and snag a role, but you're going to see a lot of names in the mix and I would wager that the coaches aren't even sure who the winner of this competition will be.

[AFTER THE JUMP: a surprising freshman linebacker!]

[Bryan Fuller]

Defensive Tackle

What we want to hear: Mazi Smith, All-American here we come. Kris Jenkins, breakout player of the year, here we come. Mason Graham, Rayshaun Benny, George Rooks, and Kenneth Grant are making everyone feel comfortable about the future.

What we're hearing: Very little to say here. The two starters are set, with Mazi Smith getting rave reviews for his leadership (Harbaugh said that Smith is coaching guys on the field) and Kris Jenkins being singled out for having a great camp ($). Outside of that, not much else going on that wasn't talked about last time. No new mentions of any of the second year DTs or of Cam Goode, who may or may not be alive, but the hype train for Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant is rolling along. A recent update named them both as having very good camps and they seem like locks to see playing time this season.

What it means: The same. Jenkins-Smith as the starters, Goode likely with Benny next up, and then Graham/Grant/Rooks below that, but with the true freshmen showing flashes of Dude status already.

Linebacker

What we want to hear: Junior Colson is ready to roll in year #2, NHG is steady eddy, and the depth is better than we expected.

What we're hearing: The starters remain pretty locked in stone and we continue to hear the "All-American" phrase used to describe Junior Colson, although it's unclear if the program thinks that for 2022 or 2023. Nikhai Hill-Green got a nice shoutout in an update naming him as one of the least mistake-prone players on the team ($), a good thing to say about a linebacker. That's really it about the 1s.

It's a similar story with the 2s, where Michael Barrett is still being praised for his leadership but does not appear to be in serious contention for a starting role, and Kalel Mullings is being mentioned at LB, probably because he has to be. Nothing new on the Velazquez/Hood front, but we are hearing some positive chatter about a couple of freshman LBs. Jimmy Rolder has been singled out by two different insiders as a player who is still pretty fresh because he didn't arrive in Ann Arbor until July, but is already impressing some on staff. Brandon Justice reported that Rolder could find himself on the field at some point in his true freshman season ($). Deuce Spurlock got a namedrop for his performance in camp, but no implication about playing time.

The newest name to appear is Micah Pollard, who I probably could've put at EDGE but there were already so many names there that I thought it would be more efficient to put him at LB. Pollard was not heard from until the start of this week and then he popped up in reports from both Henschke ($) and Balas ($) within 24 hours of each other, which suggests it's perhaps something to note. Both said that he has made surprising strides and had a good performance at the weekend scrimmage. However, both mentioned him with terms like "depth" and "deeper than we thought" attached, which feels important- probably not going to see him much in meaningful minutes this year, but probably good news for down the road.

What it means: Colson-NHG, (gap), Barrett, (gap), Mullings, (gap), Velazquez-Hood, (gap), Rolder-Pollard-Spurlock. Starters will probably be pretty/very good, but please don't get injured!!!

[Patrick Barron]

Cornerback

What we want to hear: DJ Turner is being slept on by national analysts, Gemon Green is ready to finally be able to play the football, Will Johnson is everything we dreamed of, and Mike Sainristil has picked up the nickel job no problem.

What we're hearing: The discussion of DJ Turner is pretty scant, but not really surprising for a guy who is a lock to start and a returning Dude. Focus instead has turned to the battle for the #2 corner job, and reports have it that Gemon Green seems likely to start the season as CB2 ($), though Will Johnson is going to play heavily. Otherwise, cornerback discussion from insiders is almost as quiet as it is for defensive tackles.

However, we do have a little bit more to gnaw on because Steve Clinkscale spoke to the media and left us with some nuggets. Clink was asked about Mike Sainristil and went into a bit of a tangent which transitioned into him talking about rotation at the nickel spot:

Mikey’s still playing both sides, and he’s doing a great job of understanding and embodying what we’re doing on defense. And to be honest with you, man, he’s so natural. Sometimes, when I watch film — ‘Wow, he’s only been over here with us for a few months.’ He’s really been a good leader in that room with the nickels. And he, DJ Turner has given us some nickel reps, Will Johnson, Kody, and of course, Rod Moore.

The other interesting piece of information I picked out was about Ja'Den McBurrows, where the injury prognosis does not sound great. The quote Clinkscale gave is interesting because it relays both how much the staff likes McBurrows but also how he is not remotely close to the football field right now:

Medically speaking, (McBurrows) has a chance, but I’m not really sure. But, if he is and he’s available and able to go out there and do his job, he’ll definitely have a part in the secondary. He showed that he’s physical, he’s super quick and fast. Now he’s showing me that he knows the game more and the defense. So that’s gonna gain more trust. So when he’s 100%, he’ll definitely contribute and be a big asset for us.

It sounded like McBurrows was a guy they wanted to use at corner last season but couldn't due to injury, and now it's happening again.

What it means: Turner starts at one corner spot and Green at the other... until Johnson passes him. Sainristil likely starts in the slot but Michigan may be more flexible than anticipated there, and the possibility Rod Moore or a different safety grabs that job at some point is very real. As for McBurrows, it's a major bummer for the player, but it does seem like he's a secret weapon in waiting... could be following the DJ Turner career path where injuries wipe out the first two years and then he explodes in year #3 when finally healthy.

Safety

What we want to hear: The future is now and the next generation is every bit as good as the players who came before them. Rod Moore and RJ Moten are ready drop the "for a freshman" label from the phrase "great for a freshman", while Makari Paige has made The Leap.

What we're hearing: The known quantities are still known, and they're still pretty good. Rod Moore has gotten continued effusive praise, with Clinkscale dropping one of my favorite quotes about Moore as a freshman grasping the scheme compared to his compatriots: "except for Rod Moore, he was different". One insider report says that some in the program think Moore is a future NFL Draft candidate ($) and another named him as one of the least mistake-prone players on the defense ($).

Nothing new on RJ Moten, but the reports that Makari Paige is going to have a role on this defense are continuing to trickle out into the open ($). Clinkscale said that Paige's growth in the spring has continued into the fall, while other insiders have maintained the line from last week about Paige cobbling together a strong camp.

Among the freshmen, Zeke Berry hype is starting to pick up as the comparisons to Rod Moore continue. The phrase "real deal" was used to describe Berry ($) and Clinkscale said he's "especially performing to a level where you can see his instincts. You can see why we recruited him and what he’s gonna be able to do".

What it means: Moten and Moore are your starters, Paige will likely see the field early and often, and then there's a bit of a drop off from there, with Berry perhaps rising to be next in line, though Quinten Johnson and Keon Sabb should be in the discussion as well.

[Patrick Barron]

Special Teams

What we want to hear: BEST. SPECIAL. TEAMS. IN. THE. COUNTRY.

What we're hearing: I don't have anything on the specialists... Moody and Robbins are Moody and Robbins really. But the updates we do have revolve around the return game. Lorenz was listing some questions he had about the team and mentioned that punt returns seem to be an open battle, dropping it in that the team inquired about ex-Iowa punt returner Charlie Jones who was in the portal earlier in the offseason (committed to Purdue) ($). That would suggest some degree of dissatisfaction about the options. He threw out Ronnie Bell and AJ Henning as the likeliest returners, but went on to give some more information on that front behind the paywall. Meanwhile, Balas stated that Bell will have some role in the return game ($), but again, the details are murky. DJ Turner's name has been mentioned there too ($).

Meanwhile, a Henschke update earlier this week stated that the team would like to keep Blake Corum off the kick return unit and said that several of the young receivers are applying themselves hard on special teams, knowing it is the fastest way to playing time ($). Henschke tossed out a couple names who could run kicks back, saying the team likes their potential at that position.

What it means: I would venture to guess that despite the speculation, it will be Ronnie Bell and AJ Henning sharing the punt returning role, while perhaps someone like Darrius Clemons will be running kicks back. Michigan has no shortage of fast guys and while they do want to protect Bell, he is not as vital as Corum injury-wise. The depth at WR is much better, and if Michigan feels that Bell is such an asset running punts back that they have to use him there, I think they'll do it. The Turner thing feels a lot like when they tried Lavert Hill at punt returner in 2019 and then quickly put it back in the garage.

this is true but also i feel like the offseason defense is always "teeth emoji" and then other than 2020 when the season comes they're usually fine. Except 2016 when they were crazy good. And 2018 when they were until they were not fine.

So hopefully they'll be plenty fine. Protect the LBs.

I get what you're saying about 2018 but who the hell could have known that our 3rd CB would end up being so pivotal in the biggest game of the year?  Especially when that guy was playing lights out all year.

If anything, I'd say 2019 was one of those times where we said "ehh DT is a bit shaky" and then the season came we got MAULED up the middle time and time again.  Wisconsin getting 5 yards on every play was the most deflating thing.  And it was made worse knowing that Ohio State was gonna do the same thing and then some, which they did.

No one even knew how to pronounce Ojabo before the Wisconsin game…

i am normally pretty pessimistic (and who wouldn’t be after the run UM had between 2003 to 2020), but I am cautiously optimistic that this D will be good enough to compliment the improved, more dangerous and explosive offense.

Ronnie B was potentially game changing electric on punt returns before his unfortunate injury. I'd take the risk it was a fluke injury for that type of reward.

There are no fewer than 5 other capable-to-possible Superstar WRs in the room if he were to get injured again. And said possible injury could happen on a jet sweep or any open field cut, as it did last year.

This is probably going to be a defense that will take some time to find its groove, which is pretty normal.  I think the defensive backs will be fine.  But the front 7 will need a lot of reps until they find their stride and identify the leaders.  The offense will need to be strong out of the gate and will need to carry the D in a few of the tougher games like Iowa.  But by late in the season the defense should be 'there'.

We're going to miss Hutch and Ojabo, but you have to think that at least two DEs will emerge as servicable to very good.   With Morris, Anoma, McGregor, Taylor Upshaw and super-freak Julius Weldchof, Derrick Moore, etc. we have the raw athletic potential/genetics to have another generation of pass rushing monsters if it clicks for them.  I think the D hinges on that.

The rest of the D-line and the secondary sound strong and with some depth.  The LBs sound o.k., but without depth.

I tend to agree but on the MGoPodcast and WTKA Brian and Seth noted that even the unexpected DE contributors of past seasons were starting to get a lot of hype by this time in camp.  I.e. if McGregor was getting “looking a lot like Hutch did as a Junior” mentions rather than “starting to come into his own…”.

August 25th, 2022 at 10:07 PM ^

True, but the talk around the interior of the line last year was far less effusive and they held up pretty well.  I agree that nobody is jumping out like Hutchinson and Ojabo were last year but conversely the talk around the tackles is far more optimistic than it was for Smith and Hinton last year.  So it may be a situation where people recognize the ends aren't close to two NFL first rounders (Ojabo would have been a first rounder without the ACL injury) but might still be better than just Some Guys (except TJ Guy, who is always a Guy).

The Homie J

August 26th, 2022 at 11:14 AM ^

Yeah I also wonder if because we lack a Hutchinson/Ojabo level guy (who just immediately jumps off the page to anyone who watches practice) that a lot of very good players are being seen as "just a guy" while they have to compete with the literal best OL in the country.  It might be wishful thinking, but we could actually have a great DE or 2 who just haven't popped because they're not destroying a tackle on an elite level OL

For the defense to be really good, it feels like we need a bit of good luck on the injury front this year.  Hoping some of the young players mature very quickly.

Definitely good to hear that McGregor is improving and that Anoma seems like a contributor this year, which is definitely better than Jordan Whittley...

These bits sound promising long term.

More immediately the reference to several players not making mistakes (NHG, Moore, Berry) makes me wonder if there are other players making a lot of them; that it has had to be a major point of emphasis.

August 25th, 2022 at 5:59 PM ^

Perhaps it is years of BPONE but I can't believe the lack of enthusiasm about Anoma's potential impact.  Instead we are talking about foreign project guys that work out under bridges and generic 3 stars that have done nothing in 3-4 years on the roster.  This was a top 5 player in the country and #1 DE, he has to have elite athleticism or traits that can be unleashed by the guy who coached him in HS, to at least make him a very exciting situational player.  Rushing the passer on 3rd & long doesn't take a year of learning the system to do.

I've heard Seth's repeated 'meh' take on him which is fine but I tend to notice that the more confident that Seth/Brian (basically the same person that talks over everyone else, at this point) are about something on limited data, the more likely it is wrong.  Just read the 'cackle with knowing glee' previews before every MSU game for reference or their Joe Milton over-confidence after 1 game.  Anyway, would be curious if anyone else has other thoughts or has seen anything that talks about what his strengths are and how he could contribute, or even a real explanation of why he hasn't worked out.  He seems boom or bust to me - either he's not on the roster in a month because he did something stupid - or he's making key situational contributions by mid-season and possibly a real factor by the OSU game.  I just don't see him hanging out at 5th on the depth chart all year and seeing garbage time.

August 25th, 2022 at 6:29 PM ^

Perhaps it isn’t BPONE, but rather recency bias. After all, several other smart, athletic “foreign” project guys have worked out in the last few years.

I am enthused about Anoma, and would not be surprised to see him blossom with familiar faces, motivation, and increased maturity after having graduated. Additionally, it is highly likely that the staff has done their homework and has kicked the tires on him for a long time. If he completes an MSW and the team gets even a couple of sacks out of him in limited playing time, that’s a huge win all around.

Kind of a confusing post -- have you actually looked up this kid's history? Because it honestly sounds like you're overly attached to the four year old star rating more so than the four intervening years of opportunity to play without success.  I think the lack of enthusiasm makes sense solely based off the fact that he's only actually played for one full year, against lesser competition, with "meh" results.  That's enough of a "real reason" for me to be skeptical, at least.

Now, I think he still has potential, and before he transferred to UT Martin he released a statement taking real accountability. He apologized to coaches and teammates at both Alabama and Houston, and seemed sincere about it. He then finally got on the field, and was a stable enough presence.  He's also enrolled at Michigan as a social worker, which speaks to me that he has matured and wants to help people. So I don't actually think he'll be boom or bust, I think it's possible he just won't fulfill his potential because he missed out on significant opportunities for stable development.

I'm definitely intrigued by the pedigree, doesn't seem like too many guys ranked that high, do nothing in college.  Da'Shawn Hand would be one example that comes to mind as a top 5 player that was a bust in college, but he still contributed at Alabama and was drafted in the 4th round.  We aren't exactly loaded or even good at DE so I just don't see how someone with that talent won't be a factor.  Welschoff has been here 4 years - our foreign born projects like Paye and Ojabo were first round talents after 4 years, he is still looking for a spot in a rotation that isn't stacked.

But his lack of success has been more due to attitude and off the field issues than his actual abilities. If he's truly gotten shit figured out, then why couldn't he be a solid contributor? He's got Biff for support, Elston is a great coach, and he's a 6'5" 250 former top 50 recruit all time

I don't think Anoma is going to be a hugely impactful transfer this year (yes he had 5* pedigree but that WDE class had Micah Parsons and a lot of misses), but I agree that it's pretty clear the guy got hurt midway through the year and that limited his performance.  Here's his season stats at UT Martin and something happened at the beginning of November that limited his effectiveness after picking up 9.5 TFLs and 6 sacks in 8 games.  Yeah, those aren't overwhelming numbers but considering he missed the previous season they point to a guy who had some potential and may well have been playing himself back into shape.  As they said on the podcast if UM gets a Mike Danna-level performance from him this year that would be great, and UM would be immeasurably better at the edge if that happened.  So we'll see.  But I do understand the skepticism even if I agree that the reflexive cynicism might be undeserved for him.

ShadowStorm33

August 26th, 2022 at 12:39 PM ^

I mean, if it was in part injury related last year, it would make a lot of sense. Dude essentially hadn't played in 2-3 years, so of course he's going to be rusty, lower level of competition or not. And if he gets hurt again midway through the year, it's going to further depress his stats.

It's like running a drag race. You're starting from full stop (no pace car/rolling start), and then start to run out of gas midway through the race. Doesn't really tell much about what the engine is capable of.

Of course there's certainly the potential that he won't pan out. Knowledge of scheme and field awareness are likely going to be huge issues for a guy on his fourth team in five years (and who really only played one of those years). But I'm at least optimistic that the coaches can unleash his athleticism into at least, say, a third down pass rusher...

Agreed, the lack of enthusiasm for Anoma is odd. They were comparing him to JORDAN WHITTLEY a few weeks back. It's not like Anoma lacks talent, it's more off the field and mental stuff that he needs to work on. If he's gotten that stuff straight and is now at a legit program (sorry, Houstan and UT Martin) I see no reason why Anoma couldn't be a contributor or even start

I'm much less concerned about pre-season defense - by position - analysis because of BALTIMORE RAVENS.

Unlike under Don Brown, where outcome was almost always dependent on winning individual matchups, the Ravens defense brought over by MacDonald and now falling to Minter is built to utilize its best players and mismatches and hide its biggest weakness - as should be the job of a modern coordinator.

Last year the strength of the defense was obviously the edge with Hutch and Ojabo, and this year it looks like the DT's and secondary should be a strength.  Unlike under Don Brown, where we could get exposed by simply being outclassed at one position (see Barkley, Hammler, OSU 2018, OSU 2019), this NFL defense is built to mitigate exposure on its weakest links and maximize usage of its strengths.

Hence, I expect a lot more exotic blitzes from the talented safeties this year if we aren't hitting home with the front 4 - having elite DT's allows for this as the middle of the pocket should be collapsing often.

Unlike with Brown, we don't get a boom or bust defense that is top 5 in the nation after playing inferior talent and then blown out of the water by a singular elite player or top notch offense.

TLDR: I expect a top 15-20 defense that will be flexible enough and well coordinated enough to hang with and adjust to every team on the schedule.  No, this will not be a generational UGA 2021 or UM 1997 defense, but it doesn't have to be.  OSU is by far the scariest team on the schedule and we will need to scheme appropriately given their talent level.  However, OSU has just as much if not more work to do on the defensive side of the ball....and Haskins just scored another TD.

Other than the uncertainty at the other Edge spot this sounds more promising than I expected.  Yes there are depth concerns after the 3rd guy at all position groups but...that's pretty normal.  I'm not crazy about Bell being on punt returns but if they're unhappy with Henning then I see why you'd consider rolling him out there.

I do expect McGregor and Moore to see the field a lot as the other edge, and if you told me Anoma saw some snaps early on in blowouts I wouldn't be shocked.  I think they'll have to scheme more pressure than last year but there is talent on the line to maybe Moneyball your way close to the 34 sacks they had last year.  This isn't a championship-level defensive line at this moment but there's potential here to be really good if guys hit their strides during the year.

It's crazy that last offseason everyone assumed the secondary would be gawd awful and instead it was pretty good to great by the end of the year.  They'll miss guys like Hill and Hawkins but I like Moore a ton and Moten and Paige are guys you can see having high floors at the very least.

If I squint...my two predictions sound like they're on the table.

The first was that Will Johnson isn't a NB. It drove me crazy when people kept acting like that was going to be a real thing (I see his name mentioned, BUT)...

But, DJ Turner's name was mentioned. Before Sainristil came onto the scene, I always said Johnson is going to push to play outside at CB and they'll slide Turner inside to the NB spot, just like we did with Jourdan Lewis. When we went back to 2 CBs, Johnson would go off and Turner would move back outside.

Second...after Paige's big spring, I thought he could take the starting S spot, bumping Moore back to NB, where he played a ton last year.

With Turner, Moore, and Sainristil...I feel a LOT better than I did on draft day when Dax was officially out.

Johnson and Paige are HUGE. They have the potential to offer us all kinds of flexibility in the secondary. If Zeke Berry comes along at NB, we're in GREAT shape.
