The 2023 Jake Rudock Memorial Depth Chart Comment Count

Seth January 30th, 2024 at 2:01 PM

Okay nerds; you asked so I made.

After the conclusion of the 2014 season, Kirk Ferentz put out a post-bowl depth chart exclusively for the purpose of putting transfer risk redshirt sophomore C.J. Beathard ahead of redshirt junior Jake Rudock, who had been starting the shared situation by nature of being the slightly better quarterback. He got the hint and transferred to Michigan; while Beathard kept the Iowa gig another two years.

That's why it says "Jake Rudock Memorial" on the final edition of Michigan's Fee Fi Foe Film graphic. The rest should be self-explanatory, or is explained on the key.

Postseason updates: Barner got a shield, Trente Jones got a star, and I thought about giving one to Mullings as well.

A larger version of the diagram is here. A PDF of this and all of our 2023 opponents is here. There's nothing after the jump.

Curious to see how Barnhart graded out at Guard, through a layman's eyes I thought he was more suitable there than at Tackle, hopefully he can get drafted in the latter rounds.

Was there UFR's for OSU/Bama that I haven't seen?

This is prettiest thing I have seen on this site. I remember looking at the 2021 Ohio State offense and wondering what that was like. Now, I know. 15-0. This is a thing a beauty.

Does Barnes getting a shield by definition mean that he was better than Loveland?  Perhaps because of expectations but I remember Barnes making more "surprising" catches than Loveland, though Loveland was expected to make surprising catches.   Glad we had Barnes and glad we're getting Loveland back.

Thank you! One of the real treats on MGoBlog are these beautifully crafted diagrams and illustrations. I hope that they fihd their way into some sort of durable memento like a book(s) (hint - will pay money for that)

Seth, do you ever re-evaluate your scoring/conclusions based on what the team or coaches say? The example I'm talking about is Junior Colson, who was the co-DPOY named by the team and only one of two not to have a star on your chart? It's gotta be a tricky thing to decide on when your film study says one thing and the team concludes another.

Thanks for this by the way. All-time great graphic from this site in my opinion

I try to stick to my charting, but I do use those things to sanity-check myself. Remember, my job is grading out the why of the game; theirs is getting players to play better. He doesn't suck; he just gets a lot of volume. I've said before this defense is hell on linebackers, so maybe I was judging him too harshly? I did the same with Josh Ross and they sung his praises to the high heavens too.

Need better kerning on Minnesota.  Thanks for doing this Seth - there is a lot of great stuff packed into a small amount of space.  Took me a few secs to figure out the Q tips on Junior Colson.

It's no wonder nobody figured out how to beat this team. Shoulda/Coulda been back to back national champs. This is an all-time Michigan team that we'll all remember for the rest of our lives. Complete domination all season. Stars and legends everywhere. What a year and what a group of kids.
