What do you miss (UM football related)
I don't think you were listening to talk radio in the 90s. There was plenty to complain about.
Did you go to games in the eighties and nineties? I sat in what I called the Bitter Alumni Section in the eighties. The people around us always found something they didn't like. Fans complained about how Bo never threw the ball or how he threw it too much or how simple his offenses were or how they only beat that winless Northwestern team 38-0.
Hell, if this board had been around in 1997 they'd have spent the entire year complaining about the offense and you can't win the big games without a better offense or how that one long run Tavian Banks had in the Iowa game meant the defense was doomed.
People would have strangled themselves over the handful of games where the offense couldn't pull away and games that the defense was dominant in were still only basically one-score contests well into the second half. We'd be jumping off bridges after the near-disaster against Notre Dame, and calls for a backup QB or RB (especially with Anthony Thomas on the second string) would be deafening.
People would've predicted humiliating defeat going into Happy Valley, then it'd be muppets and otters, and people would pretend they didn't mean it.
I miss going to games. Some people gripe about how much people do or don't stand, or about the press boxes, or about playing Southeastern Idaho State.
Man, I'd love to see Michigan play against SIS at home again.
1. BIG Champions
2. Beating OSU
3. Beating MSU
4. Robot QBs with laser arms
5. Effective workhorse running backs
6. Not dealing with spread offenses.
I miss the 100+ foot wall with the running water in the moat, that was the men's urinal in the north endzone bathroom!
That was an amazing experience..
Winning big games (rivalries, major bowls, etc.)
+1 for OP for making me laugh with your added edit "what have i done..."
I miss Hot Dog Guy.
And making the Zoltan "Z".
Also John Cooper
Being QB University and always having a nationally-known RB running behind a solid offensive line. Hopefully we get back to that.
beyond strawberry Chills (not that Minute Maid crap) is having that swagger in the program where you just knew UM was going to come out on top and supported them loudly as a result. Trash-talking rivals and pretty much every other team. Now, has to be dialed back until the team proves itself worthy of that again.
I miss that a lot
was surprisingly absent last season. He needs to bring it back.
Rumor was that the refs were going to crack down on the sideline antics, and I believe Harbaugh took notice. Though apparently the refs were only going to crack down on Harbaugh's sideline antics; I sure saw a lot of it elsewhere.
have never bought this about the "crackdown." Coaches were running wild last year and nothing was called. This explanation for him toning down is behavior never rang true to me.
Haven't read any of the other responses yet, so I assume no one else has thought of this:
Winning a lot, especially against OSU. Also playing in Rose Bowls.
Being able to have an "overdose of swag".
A run game
I miss jerseys from the 90's and 2000's. When every school had their own uniform but it wasn't so space age looking. Don't get me wrong I don't hate the innovations that Oregon has brought completely.
There was just something to having consistency with the uniforms. Michigan was Maize and Blue. Ohio States, regardless of how I feel about them as a team, have awesome uniforms, road and home. All this gloss, matte, super shiny stuff and stuff was cool at first and now it is just insanity.
Bring me back the classic uni's and grass fields. Man I miss all grass fields.
The free papers/programs that they passed out before games. They stopped passing them out, and we stopped winning =/
Late game comebacks where we won the game in fantastic ways.
Felt like during the late 90's and early 2000's, no matter the situation we had a shot at winning and we always did.
Beating OSU. I don't know how the answers in this thread could be anything other than what I just said. This program isn't the same without being able to command a level of respect in that game. The respect we garner nationally is not what it could be until we start winning games against good OSU teams.
We're at a point in this rivalry where OSU could be down 28-0 with under 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, they'd still legitimately believe they will come back and win the game, and I personally wouldn't be at all shocked to watch them do it. I don't doubt that Harbaugh and Co. take the OSU game personally, but it's undeniable that OSU has a MASSIVE psychological advantage in this game. We're already down 7 points before the frickin' coin toss.
I agree about the psychological advantage OSU has. I sat next to two OSU fans at this year's game. Even though they were down 14-0 pretty quickly, they never believed that they would lose. And sadly, I wasn't confident that we would win, and wouldn't have been until the clock said 0:00. Something needs to change that narrative and only winning will do it.
I also agree that beating OSU regularly is the thing I miss the most. (I live in Ohio, so my pain is magnified)
Sending QB's to the NFL year in and year out.
Grbac, Collins, Griese, Brady, Henne
Even Dreisbach, Mallett, & Navarre got a taste at QB.
Colts (practice) 2007
that pushed a football across the field with its nose. Must have been early 70's.
The zero yard stop route when the DB is 10 yards off. Take what they give ya. An uncontested 5 yards on first or second down is always a good idea.
I miss Michigan Replay. The music, the highlights, the preview of the next opponent. I wish that came back with the cool music as well.
