Way OT: Old Sport Mags and UM FB VCR Tapes
As a genuinely old person my wife has given me an ultimatum. My old (1978-1995) sports magazines (many involve UM)---maybe 8 large boxes---and old VCR tapes of UM games (maybe 200) must go.
I am not asking for money. I am trying to find them a home.
I am saving about 10-15 percent of the old mags and old OSU, MSU, ND and NCAA BB tapes, but anyone who is willing to take what I have off my hands, can have the remainder as I get rid of them or croak.
My email is [email protected]. I live in Ann Arbor.
is kind of a sad post. Ya know, 80 is the new 75, right?
I'll drop him an email. But I would be surprised if he has any games I don't already have.
There's about four specific games I've been looking for for about 15 years now. And I'm 99% convinced that nobody out there has them. We'll see.
Just curious...which games are you looking for?
I'll be willing to bet if they are even semi-famous games I will have a vivid, albiet completely inaccurate, recollection of almost every play.
They're all pretty old. And I think only one is truly obtainable.
- 1990 Illinois (22-17 win at the big house - Illinois was part of the 4-way conference champion thanks to the refs screwing us in the MSU game.)
- 1990 Maryland (I'm thinking this game might not have been broadcast on TV.)
- 1988 Northwestern (Another one I'm doubting aired on TV).
- 1983 Purdue
And better copies of....
- 1985 Purdue (47-0 win at the big house. I already have a TV broadcast copy of this game but the picture quality is awful)
-1976 Minnesota (Broadcast on ABC, major blowout but AWFUL picture quality.)
you have some basketball videos. Do you have copies or anything already posted of 1995 Michigan v. WKU in the NCAA tourney (OT loss) or 1997 Michigan at Duke (Last second win on a Traylor dunk)?
Sorry I don't have those.
Almost all the basketball games I have were gifted to me from a relative involving the Fab Five years.
thanks anyway.
I have a VHS tape with some stuff from the 1996-1997 season I've been meaning to transfer in some manner for years. It has a few clips of the Traylor broken backboard from the Ball State game (local news and SportsCenter), plus (I think):
Michigan @ Duke, 12/8/1996
Michigan vs. St. Johns, 12/11/1996
Michigan vs. Arizona, 12/21/1996
Is that the game you were referencing? The game played in 1997 was at Crisler, and I think this one ended with an epic Duke collapse. (They led something like 61-54 and lost 62-61. It was one of several games that year where Maceo Baston blocked the other team's final, potentially game-winning shot.)
to see if I have any of these and get back if I do.

It was a Noon kick as opposed to the usual 1 PM kick for non-National TV games. It was at Noon because it supposed to be on ABC. But ABC changed their mind after the Saturday before, when Iowa hammered Illinois. Iowa was #6 in the country and leading the B1G at the time with their then-undefeated conference record - so I guess they were the team to show.
ESPN alternated B1G and Ivy League games at that time for their 12 PM broadcast. That week was the week they had the Ivy League. So they showed 3-5 Princeton @ 4-4 Yale.
Weird time then. U-M and Illinois were both in the Top 20 at the time of the game but it seems it wasn't on TV anywhere (while a mediocre Ivy League game WAS on National TV).
The morning of the game I was pretty sick, but there was no way I was going to miss it. Before the game, a family member gave me some cold medicine (first time I ever took it, I was 15 or 16) and I ended up passed out in the stadium for nearly the entire game.
Looks like he has 1983/1985 Purdue - http://vuolovideo.com/u-mfootball.html
What always amazes me when I watch old games I attended in my youth is how completely different my memory is of what took place versus what acually happened. Frequently I will have crystal-clear memories of plays and game sequences that never took place and things that did happen I will wiped clean from my memory altogether.
username checks out
That Kate Upton hug still happened.
Don't let anybody tell you different.
Should he just stop at hug or keep going? It's just like his imagination...
they are yours.
No strings attached.
Just don't tell me if you dump them in the trash.

on one of those huge reel-to-reel players from 1975-1979. I've been telling him he needs to get them converted. I'm afraid to play them on his player due to extreme oldness.
There are places that will do that for you, though I think you're probably OK on reel-to-reel tapes They're pretty resilient. I've done a lot of digitizing of reels from the 50s-60s, and never had a problem. The only downside is the time, but it's not bad if you just let them go while you do something else.
There is also an outside chance that your dad may have a game that Art doesnt....
Keep old sport mags and UM FB VCR Tapes and call her bluff.
That's a bold strategy, Cotton
Not really. OP is probably 50-60 and at that age, you don't (shouldn't) give AF.
I would never let my wife say that to me, I would make it work somehow....screw that. I’ve been married for 19 years before anyone pops off and says anything.
I just donated 190 VHS tapes of Michigan football games to the football team. Phil Bromley is the team's video coordinator and took them off my hands. You might want to contact him.
I am very interested in the VHS tapes. I recieved a box of tapes from a fellow mgoblogger once before! I digitize them and maintain an archive of games. over the last few years, my collection has swelled to well over 275 games! I sent an email regarding this.
The best part about the old VHS tapes is the commercials and the news cut-ins. That's why I like them.
It's fun to watch an old game and hear about the new Yugo or that the Berlin Wall may fall any day now.
another staple from the "games on VHS" era.
I have many of the PSU games in the 1990s on VHS - I enjoy seeing what was the "breaking news" back then that caused some of those games to be interrupted for a bit. (1) ABC covered the Clarence Thomas hearings and only occasionally showed PSU @ Miami in 1991. (2) Steve Fisher got fired on the same day as OSU @ PSU in 1997 (WXYZ-Detroit obviously covered that).
Dude. Never post your email in that format online. Prepare for tons of spam.
Also if you've got the time and hard drive space you can save those games to digital using a device such as
