Board Poll: Predict MSU Fallout
A. Bridges will play out the rest of the season. Izzo will claim, “Yahoo said they were done, but we weren’t finished yet”. Business as usual in EL, nothing to see here.
B. MSU will sit Bridges for the rest of the year.
C. Emmert will sit all players named in order to avoid having this news overshadow March Madness.
D. Other, please show your work
I could actually see C happen. History indicates that the NCAA comes down much harder on individual players while protecting cash cow programs and coaches. Imagine the firestorm if teams implicated (Bridges/MSU, Carter/Dook, etc.) make deep tournament runs. It seems like it would be in Emmert’s best interest to avoid that by sitting these players immediately.
What say you?

I agree, it's the Cam Newton thing. Parents took benefits but he is "unaware". Since it's not the kid directly receiving the benefit, NCAA won't do anything.

I thought Bush himself was implicated in that as well. Hotel rooms, meals, etc not just his parents?

It is true that Bush was never found to have personally accepted impermissable benefits. But nor is he believed to have been innocent. Once USC was found guilty of LOIC, Bush had graduated, voluntarily relinquished the heisman. and been in the pros for almost five years. At that point there was no reason to pursue him any further.
After the fact, there was a bunch of litigation against the NCAA after which they were found to have acted maliciously against some of the USC staff. Complicated.

Absolutely nothing will happen. It will not even get a mention in any March Madness coverage. Local media will rationalize that "this happens everywhere" and that MSU is being unfairly targeted.

won't be that he was "bullied" by the media, but that it was "such an unfortunate situation to happen to a young man."

I'd predict 2-3 game suspensions for the big names that took under $1000 (Bridges) being served before the tournament starts. After the season, wins with ineligle players will be vacated.
Will be interesting to hear Izzo's explanation for why they bought Izzo lunch.
February 23rd, 2018 at 12:37 PM ^
after all, he was having a tough week....
February 23rd, 2018 at 12:42 PM ^
to know what Izzo had for lunch.

Cream of Sum Yung Boi?
February 23rd, 2018 at 12:44 PM ^
...he'll explain that Dawkins' brother's son died during a camp at MSU in 2009 and that is what they were discussing over lunch.

There's very little to lose by sitting him. They can say they're investigating. If they're not idiots, they'll be looking for guidance from the NCAA. If a short suspension is going to be the penalty, as it usually is, take it now. Otherwise you're leaving it completely in the NCAA's hands. It's too late for MSU to claim ignorance.
February 23rd, 2018 at 4:50 PM ^
Give him a slap on the wrist hoping it shows they are taking this seriously. Then the NCAA will come down on them in the offseason and make them vacate wins, maybe loose a scholie and be put on probation.

Want C, but A is more realistic.
February 23rd, 2018 at 12:35 PM ^
but if anybody on Izzo's team were to say........like ....maybe sexually assault somebody.........then I'm sure they'd be suspended..........right?
February 23rd, 2018 at 12:36 PM ^
A. Status quo.
February 23rd, 2018 at 12:36 PM ^
What will happen? I'll take "fuck-all" for $2000, Alex. The NCAA won't do shit because they never do shit and even when they do, they do it slowly. MSU won't do shit because they have a circle-the-wagons mentality and a complete, unshakable conviction that Izzo is a shining beacon of all that is good and right with college basketball.
Five years from now, maybe some accomplishments will be vacated.
February 23rd, 2018 at 12:48 PM ^
this is nothing like stretching for a few extra minutes, now that was egregious as hell!!!
February 23rd, 2018 at 1:20 PM ^
since the NCAA has shown no interest in doing anything before. However this is a national not regional story now.. and Emmert has the embarrassment of the Feds forcing his hand. NCAA has to do something after issuing a statement that there is a systemic problem with college BB. Otherwise Emmert is stating that he can't do his job.
February 23rd, 2018 at 1:41 PM ^
Eh, they're still a bureaucracy and therefore they move at the pace of one. And even when presented with incontrovertible evidence, they under-penalize. This isn't the first scandal where people have assumed the NCAA will now finally have to do something, but if they react swiftly and decisively it would be the first where the NCAA's eventual action wasn't a complete disappointment.

Wonder if this could end up being a blessing in disguise for Izzo. He can retire at the end of this year claiming he doesn't want to deal with the NCAA about minor infractions like this (if this is all that comes out), he made a mistake, etc. Then his retirement won't be treated as an admission of guilt about the sexual assault stuff.
February 23rd, 2018 at 2:44 PM ^
Izzo's head may explode while he is getting an ulcer. Too much bad shit coming from all directions...

#D. -Izzo isn't going to respond at all and Miles will continue playing. This is "fake news" as far as MSU is concerned.
#A. would be otherwise appropriate.
February 23rd, 2018 at 2:41 PM ^
Izzo has to respond somehow. He will be asked about it at his press conferences.

D. John Engler will give Izzo and Dantonio verbal reach-arounds for their Godlike ethical superiority, but at the same time insist that Bridges sit the rest of the year because of the heat placed on MSU due to Nasser (who was only marginally related to MSU) and ESPN and Yahoo's crusade to destroy MSU for no good reason whatsoever...

A. Nothing happens. If they sit him for even 1 half, that would be an admission of guilt. Their gameplan will be the same as always -- deny, deny, deny.

I don't give a rat's ass, we beat their ass at Breslin and 5 stars have been getting worse under Izzo's tutelage for decades. Hope they keep him around.
