No more "Michigan time" starting 5.1.18
For those of you who haven't seen it, "Michigan time" (classes start 10 minutes after the hour) will be no more, effective May 1, 2018:

I know this isn't actually a big deal, but personally I HATE this. I loved Michigan time, especially for 9 am classes. That was true when I was a student, and it's true now that I'm a professor. I teach at a public university that starts classes on the hour and I really don't like it at all.

My school does this. My classes start at 15, 20 or 30. I guess that I didn't think about it but I've never had a class start on the hour.

I mean, what seems easier to grasp:
1.) Class goes from 8:00- 8:50, next classes start at 9:00
2.) class is scheduled from 8:00-9:00, but you don’t need to be time. Ours next class scheduled for 9-10 won’t really start until 10:10

Students will adapt. I wonder more about the professors that have been here for 30 years, so conditioned to stop on the hour.

Just kind of sad to see an endearing quirk like Michigan time die.

Professors who stay,
Forced to adapt to new time,
Else die and be late.

Picked a good time to apply to Michigan for grad school. Gonna miss Michigan time. Not that I needed/used it. It was ours.

The whole point of Michigan Time is that the campus is so vast that you need to give students more then 15 minutes between classes. That remains true, I assume.

Most classes ran from 10 past the hour to the end of the hour (50 minutes). 'Michigan time' only gave you 10 minutes between back to back classes just like every other school.

Michigan time gave you 10 minutes. Your 9:00 class would start at 9:10 and end at 10:00, your 10:00 class would start at 10:10 and end at 11, and so on.

Gotta say I was super confused by this at my freshman orientation why this was touted as this revolutionary concept.
'We have this super cool system here at Michigan where classes start 10 minutes after the hour. This way you can schedule back to back classes at 9 and 10 for example.'
So you have 50 minute classes like every other school but just decide to list them as an hour?
Makes total sense to get rid of this and just go by the clock for consistency, but it is sad to see a tradition go.

I was in LS&A and definitely remember it, although not everyone actually called it "Michigan time." It was just "when class starts."

Nothing you can do. Their parents were the government.

Such a joke that "people found it confusing and had a difficult time with it" - its been that way since 1930 and I always thought it was a charming thing that I'll forever associate with my time at Michigan.
Sad to see it go.

During summer internships and when I first started my job after graduating, I was mentally programmed to assume a 9am meeting started at 9:10am... and then I'd have a realization at 8:58am that Michigan time doesn't exist in the real world and I'd have to haul ass across the office to get to my meeting on time

I would have at least liked for the policy to begin 5/10/18 rather than 5/1/18. Yeah - I see what you did there.

And yet another one of the little things that could make Michigan a quirky and fun place goes by the wayside.
And, really, if you couldn't figure it out, what were you doing at Michigan?

It's ten minutes, man! C'mon

a tradition stretching back to 1936, because it did not exist when I attended in the 1970s. Class started on the hour. Period. If the professor was fifteen minutes late the class was considered canceled. Mutual respect for time was the rule. Now some professors gave a couple minutes cushion, but generally less than five minutes.
