Jim McElwain to Michigan as OC/WR Coach

Submitted by DJMich23 on
Per Sam Webb via Twitter. Still some ambiguity on his specific duties as the 10th assistant. Edit: Offensive Coordinator/Wr Coach (Per UMbig11.)

I havent seen this posted yet so ill drop it in here now.  But theres a meme going around that the naked guy with the shark is actually the owner of jimmy johns.

Im gonna dig deep and try to find the pictues.  It actually seems much more convincing than it being McElwain when you see it.

Im excited about this hire though.  Very good timing in my opinion.

The owner of jimmy john’s is a chubby toothy grinned chap that likes to hunt big game. There is a resemblance im seeing from the pictures ive seen on google.

I do like the McElwain hire as well. Hes a proven OC at Alabama, and lets Drevno focus on the OL.

Since i give up on trying to figure out how to paste a picture on here through this tablet. If anyone is curious google " jimmy johns owner shark" .  And then tell me thats not the actual naked shark guy.

At this point, how can Drevno be kept? I highly doubt Harbaugh needs three OC’s. Jim brought in Warriner to analyze the OLine, but with his great track record, why not just hand him the keys?

Drevno has shown zero ability to develop a good OLine. This is year four and there’s still so much uncertainty. He’s living off of what he did at USC. Maybe that was talent more than coaching. Drevno also cannot land the top talent in recruiting. If Anderson stays in TX, it will be a serious black eye for him. Talk about handing you a starting gig on prime time TV.

So honestly, how can he stay on at this point?

As underwhelming as our O-line has been upto this point, Drevno was the architect of the 2010 Stanford O-line that was the best in the country that year. Since he came to Michigan, he's split his time between OC duties and OL duties and hasn't yet had the chance to focus on the O-line exclusively. If Harbaugh demotes Drevno to full-time OL coach and hands McElwain the keys to the offense, I can see that working out.

There is a difference between lying and not having documentation. 2 Even if he had documentation, he was in a no win situation with no reason to show it. The school was looking to fire him for cause. They could either fire him and say he had documentation of threats that should have been reported, or they fire him and say he didn’t have enough evidence to support the claims.

Hopefully it helps recruiting in FLA. But, I have to assume he won't be with us more than a few years. I'd like to get a younger guy next.

He’s not going anywhere. You should look at his track record and realize this: he was with Saban for a few years, wanted to be a HC and took a shot with CSU, worked well. Florida needed an offensive identity and went all in on him. His teams were NOT bad at all- they weren’t great, but they weren’t bad. Let him focus solely on offense for 2-3 years, and someone will definitely take a shot with him just like Maryland did with Durkin. This may be our best offseason move yet, not named Shea Patterson.

Meh.

Not a Don Brown / Joe Moorhead level hire.

And the only think keeping us from a Don Brown / Joe Moorhead level hire on offense is ourselves.

We already did the Don Brown thing on defense, and if that dufus James Franklin could do a Joe Moorhead level hire on offense, so could we.

 Oh well.

Just freaking improve at this point.

Brown taking over the defense was a unique situation.  Harbaugh doesn't care what happens over there, just that it works and is self-sufficient.  His life is the offense.  FG Franklin was able to give Moorehead the offense, but Harbaugh simply won't do that.  He needed an OC that runs the type of offense he believes in, and shares a lot of the same philosophies.  McElwain has both of those attributes, in spades.

As long as Harbaugh is HC at Michigan, you will never see some hotshot  young OC come in and install an offense that JMFH won't have a heavy influence over.  It's just not who Harbaugh is, or what he believes in.  I do think that McElwain, with his resume, is the closest we'll ever see as that type of OC, though.  I think this is a great hire.

But, like every hire, it's an educated crapshoot and we won't know if it works until it actually does.  Or doesn't...

How do you know what Jim Harbaugh cares about? How do you know whether or not he will adapt, or change is management style? It really irks me when people talk as if they know what a coach or player is thinking, or as if they are some sort of insider. Are you a current/former player? A coach? A family member? Are you JMFH? If not, then stop talking as if you are.

Nope, none of those things.  Everything I wrote is based on his history as a head coach.  If he suddenly stops running his offense, and gives it to someone to run like he allows Brown to run the defense, I'll be the first to exclaim surprise.

Otherwise, my input is every bit as valuable as yours - none whatsoever.  Sorry you don't seem to view it that way.

Comes fast and furious and kills unsuspecting defenses. Unpredictable and Fast. So essentially the opposite of what we’ve seen the last few years. Bring it on. When your a shark your shark all the way

The man people gleefully accused of bestiality (with a shark, no less) is now a possible addition to the M coaching staff. Time to reorient and realign opinions about him from a zoophiliac to a hard-working, capable guy who'll coach up the M offense. It's 1984 all over again.

To just to make sure I am getting this right, UmBig11 had a nugget earlier on this thread indiciating DreadNo may possibly be out of here for good by March?

Good track record as OC? Check Good track record as WR coach? Check. UM being pretty awful and needing any sort of upgrade in those areas? Check

Works for me. You people complaining about this hire are the same ones that spout of that UM needs more 5 star recruits and less 3 stars. Yep, they do, but just maybe we should lower expectations a bit until some wins come in. This is a good hire. Is it the best and would I prefer someone else? Sure/maybe. He has a good track record aside from a failed HC job where his record was actually decent. I’ll take it.

The shark jokes were funny for a minute BEFORE the FL game, which tuned about to be the apex of the season.

Could we start giving this man some respect, or is this place now a Beavis and Butthead rerun?

McElwain looks like a guy who did something really dumb, and pretty gross. And so we tease him about looking like that guy. What is so wrong with that? If he can't laugh at the likeness, and the ensuing jokes, there is not only something wrong with him, but he is also missing out on some real comedic gems and opportunities to show he is a good-natured, likable guy.
