"Big 10 Refs are bad and they should feel bad" (Basketball Edition)
All I have to say has been said in the title.
Wow.
Sorry your potentially awesome game was painfully taken away from you, Ace. On behalf of the MGoBlog community, we hope you'll feel better soon.

downvoted purely for dilly dilly. god I hope that crap goes away soon.

Literally throwing someone who likes 'fancy' beer into a dungeon is a bit on the nose, I agree, but overall I enjoy most of those ads. At least they're better than Michelob Ultra ads.

the day I "reward" myself with a Michelob Ultra just kill me

A drink everytime a ref screws us sounds like the cure we all need.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:19 PM ^
No matter what calls they made, the refs successfully ruined that game. Haven't had that much fun watching tv in quite a while until about 6 seconds left in the game when the refs decided to intervene.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:26 PM ^
Replay is terrible. I'd rather live with the occasional blown call than have to wait ten minutes every game while the refs zapruder a play. Just get rid of it.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:26 PM ^
that was the early game of the year in the conference for the first 39:50.
Then in the last ten seconds we had a super long replay get overturned that probaly zero Purude fans live would have even thought was the wrong call. Then a ticky-tack foul to end it.
What happened to letting them play? How do we not get calls at home when we get fucked on the road repeatedly?
Just a sad way to end a great game. Send them to OT and let them play five more.

Make being a referee a full time job and hold these idiots accountable for actually being, you know, good referees.
To have so many big moments and big games marred by terrible referring is borderline criminal.

January 10th, 2018 at 12:19 AM ^
why this is not the case.
I'm not a big sports person, I admit.
But this seems pretty basic, just from a management / accountabilty point of view.
Especially when so much is -- let's be honest -- riding on these games. Futures, etc.
And so much profit being made...
Ridiculous.
But we always just bitch.
There needs to be some strategizing happening. By someone in position to strategize...
... this is a smart board. Can't someone figure out how to turn up the heat?

The current setup is perfect for the conferences. Referees are independent contractors, meaning the conferences don't have to pay for their travel or insurance. Outside of the biggest games and the NCAA Tournament, pay is garbage. Most of these guys are dramatically overworked -- they'll often do 25+ games in a 20 day span (and a lot of times those games aren't even in the same region).
Officiating is a full-time job with a part-time salary and no benefits. And most of these guys actually have full-time jobs outside of officiating. So, most people are turned off by the idea of making a substantial personal investment just to get a job where they'll be exceptionally overworked and underpaid.
It's also difficult to qualify as an NCAA-approved official. So, few end up with the desire to do the job, and out of the people who are left, even fewer actually have the ability. It's incredibly insular.
Now throw in the fact that it's wildly seniority-driven. The guys who have been around the longest get the best assignments. There's no "grading" or objective evaluation. If you want to officiate in the Final Four, you need to have seniority.
So, just like McDonalds has no incentive to spend billions of dollars to replace its minimum-wage-earning front of the house crew members with automated robots, conferences like the Big Ten have no incentive to drop a boatload of money into full-time professional officials.

Computerized officiating. Make it happen. These referees are a disgrace.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:30 PM ^
help in this case, because those were probably the correct calls.
But human refs have the choice not to decide the outcome when it's as weak/in doubt as that. They swallow the whistle 90 percent of the time because it's better basketball when guys actually make plays to win a game rather than get a win essentially given to them.

he's just incompetent and often wrong. I'm so glad that he is retiring.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:33 PM ^
a tribute to him. Refs stole the show.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:21 PM ^
Perfect way to wash away the stench of that loss.
Also, there's enough blame to go around. Our offense was obviously stuck near the end and we had two timeouts left. Why not call one with 15 seconds left and draw up a final play? Also, why not put a big guy on the inbounder...Either time?
January 9th, 2018 at 11:35 PM ^
and we have a small chance but man, this was our game. Four point lead with a few min left. Had the ball with no shot clock in a tied game! Fuck.

Just sayin -- I have no dog in the mod hunt.
In fact the mod sticky page just seems to be where trolls go to complain about trolling these days.
