I'm with you on this. I could not care less about what his stupid numbers say. It should be just Brian, Sam, Ira, and maybe Craig.
January 5th, 2018 at 12:42 PM ^
i'm not against numbers (although - full disclosure - i think "his stupid numbers" is a good descriptor in this case). but having said numbers doesn't mean i need to hear his stupid voice with his stupid other opinions.
IF his analytics have value, then just say "ed feng's numbers say the michigan is #17 in per-play blah blah blah" and leave it at that. he still gets his plug, and his numbers become another data point in a conversation.
because when he moves on from the data into actual, you know, speaking and opinion and stuff? hard pass.

Maybe Craig? Him and Brian are the best part. Ira is aweful and needs to go. Ed needs to drink some hot tea with honey before coming on the show to clear up what ever the hell is going on in his throat.
Ira needs to be relaced with Miz.

Don't have a lot of time listening, but Ira does seem like a bit of a homer doofus. When Sam's gone it's unlistenable. Also they should never, ever, take callers.
January 5th, 2018 at 3:38 PM ^
Ira has a bad habit of interrupting guests and talking over Sam.

Ed adds nothing but an annoyance that takes away from an otherwise excellent segment!

Yeah, I assumed he was talking about Ed. What I've always felt is Ed wants to be analytical, but he too easily falls into the crutch of "my numbers say X" and since his systems are proprietary it's hard to analyze their validity. And so when called out on it, he'll say things like "yeah, I sat and watched the tape" and after 20 seconds it's clear he barely did and it hurts his arguments.
I think he has a place on radio, but the roundtable never felt like a good fit.

Brian - "Ed, did you watch the game?"
Ed - "Yeah"
Brian - "Well did you chart it?"
Ed - "In my head"
Brian - "In your head?"
Ed - "Yeah"
Brian - "OK"

And I think it's a great example of why Brian is annoyed. I'm not saying Brian couldn't handle it better, but someone pushing an unfounded perspective when you've put in so much time to make your conclusions would be super-annoying.

Personally, the reason I like MGoBlog (and Brian) is because there's very little "professionalism". If you say something dumb, dude says "that's dumb." If someone John O'Korn plays an awful game the game summary says "John O'Korn played an awful game."
Compare that with all the "professional" media out there... It seems like they're all about not saying what they actually mean, at which point why the fuck am I even reading it?
January 5th, 2018 at 3:13 PM ^
The ol' Michigan Arrogance comes through on the podcast, and on MGoBlog, and that is exactly what I come for. Homers and pro jocks I have no time for at all. This is Michigan football we're talking about here. This is a fucking religion.

Although his model DID have UCF as #1 early in the season and he used that as a point to prove "models aren't perfect." He should have stuck with his guns on that one and planned on attending their banner raising ceremony.

i finally got to start saying that for real this past year. big moment.

If you listen to one quote where Ed is like, "I DUNNO, the defense wasn't perfect" and Brian verbally rolls his eyes, it would sound like Brian is being mean.
When you listen to this weekly, you realize that Ed basically says, "Here's some fresh HAWTAKES in yo face," over and over, and Brian is basically just groaning and beating his head against the table.
It would be a great thing if Ed could be replaced with someone who could actually go toe to toe with Brian. That would be much more entertaining that listening to a bear getting poked with a dumb stick.
January 5th, 2018 at 11:45 AM ^
As I was listening to the podcast this morning, I noticed how much Ed and Ira sounded alike. They had a brief conversation and it almost sounded like a soliloquy.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:25 PM ^
I don't think they sound anything alike. Ira has a very distinct, raspy voice that causes one pain.
January 5th, 2018 at 12:27 PM ^
I spit out my coffee when I listened to that exhcange with Ed today--and I wasn't even drinking any. Jaded as fuck Brian may be my favorite version.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:31 PM ^
Exactly. I tend to get a kick out of Brian giving Ed a hard time for being such a stubborn numbers guy, often out of touch with practical reality.
January 5th, 2018 at 12:27 PM ^
He hates you and he is just taking it out on Ira.
