Madison Roll Call

Been there three times: 1980, 1997 and 2005 and had a great time each visit. Locals are nice, the bar scene on campus is amazing and Camp Randall is a fantastic place to watch a game.
I dont remember a whole lot from the 1980 game however. Went with two fraternity brothers on a last second road trip and that was the first and only time I tried magic mushrooms. Had an amazing evening though and i actually remember that part quite well for some reason. Couldnt tell you ANYTHING about the game other than we won and they sang a version of The Victors with not nice words.

But I do remember....
One bar that was a "speakeasy" in that you were greeted at the door by somebody and then to get in you had to go through some secret door and then down a slide to get in. I thought that was about the coolest thing in the world.
Another bar that was literally in the lobby of an old folks home. At the time, and under the influence of the mushrooms, that also seemed pretty amazing.
As we were walking down a sidewalk a heard of sorority girls came marching past chanting or singing something. We sensed danger and dove through some bushes so as not to be seen and possibly captured. When I looked up I was next to a fire hydrant that somebody had put a bra on. This, was quite possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen to this day (or it seemed that way at the time).
Later we went back to the apartment at which time I remember going to the bathroom and looking in the mirror and I watched my face age. That was somewhat unpleasant.
Upon returning to the main room I looked out the window and saw a couple humping in the apartment next door. I called over my buddies to check it out and we watched them for at least 10 minutes before one of them said "hey....there's nothing over there but a couple of pillows". That reality made me sad
As the evening ended we decided to go out to the Lake in the middle of campus and look for the body of Otis Redding. Allegedly his remains were never recovered from the 1967 plane crash that killed him. We were planning on "borrowing" a boat and going out onto the lake to look for Otis. Thankfully we fell asleep before we could make that attempt.
Amazing that I remember all that.

That's a hell of a post.

I'll be in Madison for the game. I wish the weather forecast looked better.

Thanks. We are really looking forward to it.
Unfortunately, we have no mushrooms. =(
Ive actually heard the locals can be cunty, and to look out.

Madison has a lot of very good restaurants and bars and is centered on the Capitol Building. East of the Capitol Square is State St where there are a lot of student restaurants and bars. It’s fairly similar to South U and State St in Ann Arbor. West and north/west is King St, Willy St and Attwood. I made a list of some of my favorite places. One thing to note is that some places might be cash only and if you go to a bar you should get cheese curds.
Atwood:
* One Barrel Brewing Company – My favorite Madison Brewery. However, they don’t serve food
* Tex Tubb’s Taco Palace – Right next door to One Barrel. They have good Tex-Mex.
* Green Owl Café – Good vegetarian restaurant
* Chocolaterian Café – Pastries and hot chocolate for dessert
* Monty’s Blue Plate Diner – Iconic Madison restaurant with great pie!
Willy St (Williamson St) Area:
* Old Sugar Distillery – Very good specialty drinks.
* Bos Meadery – The only meadery I’ve visited. I liked their mead and they’re owned by a Michigan alum.
Capitol Building Region:
There are a ton of bars and restaurants around the capital. Some are a bit more upscale while others are truly dive bars.
* Essen Haus – Food is pretty good. If you come here, get a boot of beer to share with friends. It’s a fun experience.
* The Great Dane – One of the iconic restaurants in Madison. They have a good beer selection and a variety of food.
* Morris Ramen – Very affordable and tasty ramen.
* Tipsy Cow – I’ve heard they have good food. This is a bar that has a log of young professionals.
* Genna’s Lounge – Another good bar. Also has a lot of young professionals.
* The Old Fashion – One of the most iconic restaurants for Wisconsin food. They also have a nice beer selection.
* Lucille – Good pizza and good drinks.
* Coopers Tavern – They have very good food and a nice bar
State St:
I’m not going to call anything out on State St. I would recommend walking down State St to get a view of campus and the Capitol Building. It has a lot of nice bars, restaurants, cafes, and stores, but they’re typically more student focused.
Miscellaneous:
* Green Bush Bar – They have great pizza and drinks. It’s a little less known, and there will be a wait. Last time I was there they had Black Rocks beer from Marquette so they have my loyalty.

Thanks for all of the recommendations!

How easy is it to move from the capitol area to the stadium? My first look at a map suggests it's too far to just walk from one to the other.
November 16th, 2017 at 10:39 AM ^
It's a hike, but doable if you don't have really young kids or really old grandparents with you.
November 16th, 2017 at 11:08 AM ^
Good post and solid reccos. Only tweak is that State St is west of the capitol, not east.
Once you're on state street, there are enough options that if one doesn't work there are others a stone's throw away. I also like the plaza, the red shed (for a real thing), Wando's (fishbowl). Basically older people start at the capitol and start working your way toward campus. It'll progressively get more and more student focused. If you make it all the way down there you can check out library mall and the union and you'll see Bascom Hill where gameday is.

I'll be there Saturday, and I bookmarked the previous MGoBoard thread on this that had a ton of restaurant recommendations. It was also called "Madison Roll Call". It was also started by Walter Sobchak. Apparently that's his thing.

I live in Chicago and am also doing the double dip.....love it when the scheduling gods play nice like this. Large group making the trek for both games and hoping we dont freeze to death:). Passing on the traditional tailgate on Saturday for some bar gating at the Jordan's Big Ten pub on Regent Street. Here's to 2-0 for the weekend!
Go Blue!

Anyone going to Gameday?

3 day weekend to celebrate my birthday. Leaving tomorrow early. Nice dinner tomorrow night. Game day. Football and Hockey, yes doing the double header as well... and then kick around on Sunday. Done: Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland and Iowa. Have not done Madison. PS: Was really impressed with Iowa and Iowa City.... except the last minutes of the game. Cheers!

MGoScorpio here as well...happy birthday to you!...mine is on Sunday
November 16th, 2017 at 12:41 PM ^
Mine, was the 2nd. Been trying to prevent a sinking ship from sinking (been there 20 years) while interviewing and picking up Urgent Care shifts on my days off to see if I like it for a possible move... so delayed celebration will be this weekend.
PS: I am such a Scorpio

Ah...Iowa was #10 of the Big Ten stadiums for me last year. The end of that game was so frustrating. Here's hoping for a better outcome in Madison!

Yuuuup - section YZ Row 21.
Still looking into Friday night hockey - depends on when some other folks are able to get into Madison.

I'm excited to see Michigan at a venue outside of the Big House. And for cheese curds.
Section W, Row 51.
Who has a tailgate to crash?
November 16th, 2017 at 9:46 AM ^
November 16th, 2017 at 11:23 AM ^
W Row 42 with my g/f. She's from Madison, so we'll be wearing opposing colors but, hopefully, remaining friendly. Given the early start, we'll likely grab some breakfast near our hotel and then head over rather than tailgating.
November 16th, 2017 at 8:27 AM ^
Football obviously, and Saturday night hockey game. Tim Hortons package for 15 bucks per seat with a dof and a drink. Lets turn the arena Blue!
Ok with cold, but hoping rain takes the day off.
Go Blue...see you there.
November 16th, 2017 at 8:48 AM ^
Heading out tomorrow! Excited to go to my first Michigan away game.
Anyone have suggestions on where to tailgate/which bars to go to before the game? A tailgate to crash would be terrific. Will pay in Wisconsin craft brews.
November 16th, 2017 at 10:59 AM ^
Regent Street...lots of bars over there. Big Ten Pub, Sconnie Bar, Regent St Retreat, etc. Five minute walk to the stadium.
For anyone walking back toward state street and the capitol after the game, the nicest part of campus is north of University Ave by the lake shore. You can take Randall to University and take a right, then take a left on charter...and then take a right wherever. You'd be coming at the back of Bascom Hall, down the hill, and through Library Mall (close to the Memorial Union).
November 16th, 2017 at 8:54 AM ^
Going to the game, making the drive from Milwaukee area !
Will be tailgaiting/drinking for sure saturday, not sure where but will be parked very very early as the parking absolutely sucks in Madison on college football days
November 16th, 2017 at 8:55 AM ^
I'll be there! Tailgating with a bunch of Wisconsin fans, so it should be an interesting dynamic. I'll probably explore a bit and see if I can find some of ours.

BEER
Pickup Riverwest STEIN
Pick Up New Glarus Spotted Cow
If anybody coming out of state trust me, picking up quality beer is a good chance for you

The best beer New Glarus makes is the raspberry tart (in my opinion much better than Rubeaus, which I also love). Their serendipity is really good too.

Did the outdoor hockey game back in 2010.
Looks like it'll be cold and wet.
Is that good for Michigan?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
