Potential staff addition twitter stalking
Just something to keep an eye on with the 10th assistant coming or perhaps maybe even someone on staff will be reassigned to RB coach. I know Webb has been saying it is a possibility, but Sam Webb, Chengelis, Chris Evans, and JKP started following former OL coach and current Indiana OL coach Greg Frey on Twitter.

Never heard of Grey Frey.
January 20th, 2017 at 9:38 AM ^
That's Glenn Frey's little-discussed cousin, right? I think he was known for underrated classics like "The Stove Is On" and "You Belong To The DMV", both written while he was in line to apply for a boating permit in 1984.
I could be wrong here, of course.

Sounds like a GoT character.

unfamiliar with Frey, why would he be a bad hire?

Let's hope GucciMan and Magnus go at it again, make the day go by quicker.

GucciMan? Is that some kind of lesser-known superhero?
January 20th, 2017 at 9:08 AM ^
He wouldn't. He's a very good OL coach and a very good recruiter. Adding Frey would be a positive.

Frey was a 2015 Broyles Award nominee and has coached All-Americans. Hart has done nothing as a college coach. I'm not saying Hart sucks, but his resume is pretty weak as a coach.

Does bringing in Walder Frey mean Michigan has to change its blocking scheme? Didn't we run into this in the past where the coach was coaching a system that wasn't his specialty?
January 20th, 2017 at 9:35 AM ^
No, you don't have to change anything...but you do have to marry his daughter.
Seriously, though, Michigan runs a lot of the same concepts already. The inside zone is a staple at Michigan, and the outside zone should become more of a staple with a speedier guy like Chris Evans getting more snaps. Michigan runs some traps and power, too, but I think scheme when it comes to OL is somewhat overrated. The footwork and technique is often similar from scheme to scheme.

Power, Pin/Pull, Counter Trey, Counter OT.
Zone was their base, but Frey knows the other schemes fine.
Good coach.

You know, most people won't get this joke, but I'm officially giving myself a +1 to compensate. I'd rate that as a pretty good joke. I'm going public with that opinion...

And I'm going to balance that plus one with a good ole neg. You're welcome.

Frey would be a far better hire than Mike Hart. Hart is not ready for this job yet, regardless of how nice of a guy he was when he played here. I bet he ends up coaching at Michigan at some point in his career, but that doesn't need to be now.

While I agree about Frey over Hart right now. This was probably the same thing said about Harbaugh when Carr passed on him as QB coach for Scott Loeffler.
January 20th, 2017 at 7:50 PM ^
It was also said about Harbaugh when Rich Rod was hired here. And then Stanford happened and everyone was like 'well, crap...'

When he was at Michigan, he was a main guy when it came to recruiting Florida. The kids down there loved him. It helps that he was a very good high school player in Clearwater, FL and then played for Bobby Bowden at Florida State.
EDIT: Two of the four commits attributed to him at Indiana this year are from Florida.
January 20th, 2017 at 9:56 AM ^
thanks. it kind of makes sense why people have been saying he is a bad recruiter. Having to recruit for Indiana is no small task.
January 20th, 2017 at 1:50 PM ^
Looks like he had IL, IN, OH and the Tampa Bay area.
January 20th, 2017 at 9:23 AM ^
Seems like IU has had a litany of good RBs and OL since he's been there. By my count (using Wiki as a reference...), he's put 2 OL and 2 RBs in the NFL draft in his time at IU, which seems good for a school of IU's caliber, and they'll add Feeney to the list this year.

This provides more evidence that Harbaugh is a clear thinker who is willing to act decisively. I think a pretty good case could be made that OL has been the chief weakness of our offense in recent years. While Drevno has a superb reputation as an OL coach, the fact is that he doubles as OC. Bringing in an outstanding OL coach to bring fresh impetus to this problem area seems to be a skillful move by the head coach, if this is indeed what JH will do. Whatever happens, you have to love Harbaugh's objectivity in assessing the coaching staff and his willingness to address problems.
