Tale of the Tape II: Compare OSU & UM Stats vs Wiscy
I did this for the Rutgers games, and some people commented that it's pointless to compare stats from a blowout against a very overmatched team. Or that the "transitive property" doesn't apply to college football states. Whatever. Take em for what you want -- our D still shut down Rutgers way better than OSU did.
Undeterred, let's do it again. I know, OSU had a tougher fight -- Wiscy was at home, at night, had extra week to prepare, and "Hornibrook wasn't injured by a vicious hit the first time he threw." Agaoin, whatever. What do these stats tell me? OSU's offense is probably a bit better than ours, but we still managed to put ourselves in position to score exactly the same number of regulation points as OSU, had our FG kickers been average-competent (23 pts each). OTOH, OUR DEFENSE IS WAY BETTER THAN THEIRS. We've now seen that in 2 games in 3 weeks. Sweet Christmas.
Note: The OSU data appears to include OT, and ESPN doesn't have per-period stats, so I couldn't back it out. I guess in regulation they'd have 25 yds less offense and 21 on defense, etc. OT doesn't seem to have affected TOP (nor should it). I excluded OT scoring from the TD data.

It was when they went 5 wide. Wisconsin couldn't get pressure from the line alone. Give anyone that much time, you'll get killed.

Agreed -I also think that Michigan will be more successful with four man rushes, because of better coverage downfield and the fact that Michigan's d-line will not bounce off of Barrett like Wisconsin's did.
I am not as concerned about the Death Star as I was before this game. The fact that I am no longer concerned concerns me.

What do you think Brown was talking about when he said he wasn't going to let any offense dictate the defense he will run. I kind of think he was talking about scheme.
October 16th, 2016 at 2:26 PM ^
That's the conventional wisdom to stop that offense (which hasn't worked yet is still the conventional wisdom)
Holding OSU to 23 points in regulation is pretty good. Wisconsin should have won this game.

It helps when you don't get called for holding

Generally, I hate pointing to officiating as a compelling argument for any game outcome. But the extent of the osu holding was extreme -- and flat out wasn't called with any consistency. I have to believe reviewing this game will be an embarassment to B1G officals, and perhaps osu won't have the same obvious advantage when we play them.
But I'm not holding my breath.

It's clearly possible to move the ball against the OSU defense, but they are tough in the red zone. Judicious seasoning with Peppers might solve that.

Late in the game, Wisconsin missed a tragic amount of tackles. They could've prevented OSU's second TD if they tackled properly. Missed tackles also were almost entirely responsible for OSU's score in OT.
I wonder if the Badgers were just too worn out by the end, because it wasn't like that in the beginning.

This was so unlike what we saw in Ann Arbor. I was very impressed with the way Wisconsin wrapped us up and made the one-on-one tackles in open space. Maybe OSU deserves credit for being more elusive, but tackling seemed to be the big difference between the two games.

They had to deal with a QB who is a big running threat last night, but not against us. That's the telling difference between us and OSU. If the Buckeyes had been playing a QB who passed as well as Barrett, but was no threat to run the ball (as Speight is not), Wisconsin wins that game easily.
October 16th, 2016 at 10:32 AM ^
to watch them try to deal with Jabrill Peppers at QB. He's probably a better thrower and runner than Barrett.

stupid comments remain stupid. "Peppers is probably a better thrower and runner than Barrett." That is stupid with or without qualification. What criteria or motive other than trolling could jjustify that post?
October 16th, 2016 at 4:38 PM ^
they got killed by Barrett running. It was obvious he was going to be running and they could'nt tackle the guy. I have yet to see anyone really stop that but if anyone can, our defense can.

It looked like Chryst has been watching Michigan tape and adding plays to his packages.

Guarantee it.

OSU didn't seem to jump the snap count on the jets sweep like Wiscy did against us on defense

Not sure if it was just on errors (will have to re-watch), but Bosa sure ran around (not "through", though) a couple of the interior OL a few times.
Not saying we don't have something similar on our DL, but he looked pretty fast.
Still was really surprised how much Wiscy gashed, outmuscled, and missed being tackled by OSU's front 7.

On top of that, giving them some very different looks in the second half will be huge.
OSU is a highly talented, well coached team, as we are, and I would like nothing better than beating those MFers in Columbus.
