QBs speak to media
Few offensive players got to speak to the press today, here are a few quotes that might interest you:
Wilton Speight says Harbaugh hasn't said when he's going to name a starter. 'Last year we knew when Jake ran onto the field.'
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 26, 2016
Speight: 'It's coach's decision and not many really know what goes on in coach Harbaugh's mind.'
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 26, 2016
O'Korn says his biggest improvement in camp has been protecting the football.
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 26, 2016
O'Korn says he doesn't think any QB really thought this comp would last this long. It's been close.
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 26, 2016
O'Korn on QB competition: "everything is being evaluated from the way we walk down the halls to the way we throw a pass on a certain route."
— angelique (@chengelis) August 26, 2016
Wilton Speight: “I feel good about where I stand.”
— angelique (@chengelis) August 26, 2016
OKorn says he and Speight and Morris getting 30 percent snaps. Magnuson 70%. Sooooo no one tipping hand

"Not many really know what goes on in coach Harbaugh's mind"
Early understatement of the year contender

Quit trying.

Hell, I am even starting to lean toward Speight. I would be shocked, but hey I will support the guy under center in a winged helmet.
O'Korn says he doesn't think any QB really thought this comp would last this long. It's been close.

So will I (support whoever), but the team is clearly trying to keep the decision under wraps for whatever reason, and these statements to the media are nothing more than feeding the jackals.
IMO, you do not have to look at these qb's perfoming for long to see who the best athlete is. The only category that Speight seems to have a chance to prevail in is decision-making, which I grant you is huge. If the coaches trust O'Korn enough in that regard, I do not see it as close as they are all publicly saying.
As I said in the other thread, I predict O'Korn will have to play his way out of being the starter in the first few games for Speight to be given the reins.
That all the uninformed sentiment now seems to favor Speight only makes me more confident in my prediction. Most here were saying last year Rudock should be pulled when it was clear he was better than anything we had by a wide margin.
Or did you feel real confident when Jake went down at MN and agst MSU? Sure he (Speight) can improve, but he has obvious athletic limitations compared to O'Korn.

I am not saying Speight cannot be effective, he probably can be if he has improved, which by all accounts he has. He certainly did not look very good in his PT last year, but he showed a lot of moxie in that drive against Minnesota.
I am just saying as I look at both qb's with my limited exposure to them, I think Harbaugh is going to go with O'Korn, and I do not think the decision is as close as is publicly being stated.
Speight can be effective, but does he have the talent to beat the big boys? I just don't believe he does, but obviously I could prove to be wrong. I do believe it is very complimentary to Speight that it is being touted as this close.
If he ends up as the starter, I will pull for him to do well, and I will trust the coaches have him there for a reason.
I just don't think it will play out that way.
Thank you for clarifying, and for not being dismissive.

I figured there was some truth to the Bredeson rumors. It's because both he and Newsome will be starting. Magnuson has had the job locked up all along.

First post in seven years, and it's Eric Magnuson at QB that brought it out of you. Wow.

Both candidates bring somewhat different capabilities to the game and each may win starts depending on what the opponent brings. Just don't say "platoon" instead it's always a "competition."
August 26th, 2016 at 4:37 PM ^
Speight's improvement was clear as day in the spring game and that's mostly what we've heard continued in camp
August 26th, 2016 at 4:44 PM ^
I may be misremembering the level of specificity/source of "best last year" but wasn't that just some unsubstantiated practice rumor and not something that anybody with knowledge has actually said publicly?
August 26th, 2016 at 8:34 PM ^
Rudddddock was awful the first 6-7 games of the year and then flipped the switch to unstoppable throw god for the remaining games, it would make sense if those rumors were true in the early going, but did not hold true after Jake flipped the switch. That would mean O'Korn was better than awful which is fairly inconclusive anyway.
August 26th, 2016 at 5:11 PM ^
I think it's truly a toss up still. We will see both a lot in the first three games. They will decide it for the rest of the season.
Speight's quote, "I feel good about where I stand" seems confidant. Wouldn't surprise to see him start at Hawaii. Okorn will get most of the second half. We're gonna put numbers up against weak teams on the schedule.

Losing your job to Greg Ward is nothing to be ashamed of. He is probably the Heisman Favorite of the Group of 5 players.

I care more that a decision is made with never a thought of having the dreaded two headed monster. Twenty years ago OSU had a perfect season and national championship aspirations dashed by John Cooper when he trotted out Joe Germain to lose the game against Michigan.

It was reported that JOK looked great running the scout team. The scout team offense is our weekly opponents offense. He was not running the Michigan offense last year so while he has a strong arm and nice wheels, he needs time to transition that to the Michigan offense. Speight was obviously running the Michigan offense each day in practice last year and thus had the edge heading into Spring.
I will happy each way as it means the best man won out of two capable options. And like I said in a prior thread, both will likely be called on to play this year as it is rare for the starter to make it thru every quarter of every game.
