OT: Am I a Bad American if I Root for Coach K to Lose?
OK, I'm as American as apple pie, and I've been rooting for every single one of our athletes and teams to win in Rio ... but when we started having problems in basketball against Australia yesterday, a big part of me was thinking, "You know, I'd be OK if Coach K lost this."
If that makes me a bad American, then so ahead and neg me. But I just hate that guy so much, and I hate that I have to root for a team that he's coaching to win. I felt this same way when Kelly Tripucka and Christian Laettner played for the Pistons.
Anybody with me on this?

How about "Yes, you are a bad American and YOU SUCK..."
I will be rooting against Coach K the minute he starts coaching Duke again, but when he coaches the US team, he can do no wrong in my eyes.

I'd say you've achieved an unhealthy level of dislike for someone you've never met at this point.
That's just like, my opinion man.

You should not be rooting for Coach K to lose, not until we beat MSU and OSU.

Yes.

That's a lot of rent-free space Coach K has in your brain there, dude.
August 11th, 2016 at 1:41 PM ^
He's been living there since 1991. Totally rent-free.

Why do you hate Tripuka man? He was solid for the Pistons for many years. I was actually at the game as a kid when he lit it up the Bulls for 56 in 1983.

I've got no problem with that. Anything that makes Thompson, Durant, Barnes and especially Greene sad can't be all bad.

I am rooting for Team USA in everything but basketball and I don't feel bad about it one bit. Coach K is a reason, but the players on this team are also a reason - shitty humans like Draymond Green and overhyped black holes like Carmelo are impossible for me to root for.

not like rooting against OSU in a bowl game/national championship. This is different -- hold your nose, smile, and pull for the red, white and blue.

Same difference.

It's about the players not the coach. Now get your shit together magget!!!
August 11th, 2016 at 1:44 PM ^
Yes, yes you are a bad American! I'm not a big fan of Coach K either but there are quite a few players on that team that I do like and would love to see get a gold medal.

Typically, to be a shitty person, you have to do shitty stuff. I don't mean have a bad day, but I mean do a lot of bad...in your words...shit.

A UNC grad and his logo is now on all the UNC and UM clothing. Dude was an ass to his teammates and cheated on his wife. To me that would seem to make for a shittier person than someone who is frenemies with a rival tennis player and went all George Brett on an official.
I think it's easier to root against people when they play individual sports. I'm sure there are Red Wing fans that hated Todd Bertuzzi for ending the career of Steve Moore, but were forced to hold their hate while he skated for the Wings. When it's tennis or golf, there are no teammates to be negatively impacted.

I have no strong opinion on MJ these days. But I did when I was a kid.
I detassled corn (worst job of my life, hot as hell, corn cuts on arms/legs, dirty brown drinking water, 12 hour days, bee stings, etc.) as a 14 year old to pay $360 to attend his basketball camp in Chicago in 1989. After he addressed the ~thousand campers and told everyone to go back to the dorms to get ready for dinner he just stood at half court while all the campers just walked by and stared. I found the courage to walk right up to him and shake his hand and introduce myself. He laughed and I walked away on cloud nine.
I then grew up and realized that these stars are nothing special, they're human. I stopped idolizing them once I realized that. I am probably the biggest sports fan that doesn't own a sports jersey with someone's name on it. When I met Jim Harbaugh out here in LA after his camp recently I was the only Michigan fan that didn't ask for an autograph/picture. I just wanted to shake his hand and get 30 seconds of his time. That's just how I roll I guess.
I'm not giving these examples because I think I'm better than anyone else. Everyone can do what they want. My point is that I do not idolize athletes, actors, etc. I'm sure Jordan could have been a better teammate and husband. Likewise I think Serena is a shitty person and do not root for her. You can have your opinion and I will not judge you. So I think it's funny that you judge me for having my own opinion of Serena Williams. The things I've heard about her over the years is enough for me to believe what I believe.

Just observing how a noted adulterer "could've done better", but someone who has basically been a dick is a shitty person.

The irony of a UNC guy indiscriminately calling people shitty is just too delicious.

lol, you really find that "delicious"? So since my graduate school's undergraduate professors fixed the grades of some athletes I'm not allowed to think Serena Williams is a shitty person? That makes sense. With logic like that I can only assume you did not actually attend a great academic institution like Dook. But if you did, yikes.
Mad bro? Because that is one helluva paper tiger argument. Made my day....

The great thing about the Olympics is that we can stop taking sides against each other and root for the same team (hint: it's the one with "USA" on the jerseys). So I get the dislike but you need to set it aside and choose to root FOR the USA and ignore whatever unpleasantness you feel towards Coach K that makes you want to root against him.

I mean, aside from Australia giving us a run for our money, who else is on the board that we could realistically lose to? I mean, I am not a huge fan of Mike Krzyzewski either, but then it isn't like he should need to do a lot of super-serious coaching for the US to be the favorite in basketball. I kind of see his presence there as somewhat immaterial - far more concerned with our team doing well.

But we can't spell Mork Dimtinio.

I will openly admit that I was cheering for Australia last evening. Not really because of Coach K, but because Australia played a great team game. The 2nd half 4 pass fast break when the ball didn't hit the floor was a thing of beauty. I paused the game and rewatched that fast break at least 5 times. Poetry in motion. Meanwhile, Kevin Durant threw up ill-advised shot after ill-advised shot. USA talent eventually won the game, but I loved the Aussie's overall team game.

*in an un-American sissy voice*
"Oh, I felt so bad for Kharlamov, Mikhailov, and Makarov. Those guys are poetry in motion. They didn't deserve to lose to a bunch of American college hockey players. Tretiak didn't deserve to get pulled. Look how sad they are watching the USA celebrate ..."

Personally, I feel absolutely 0 connection to this edition of the olympic USA men's bball team. I genuinely dislike 75 percent of the players on the squad. Carmelo, Draymond, Durant, Cousins, Melo?? Blehhhhhhhhhhhhh

The dude jumped ship and joined a team that beat him in a seven game series. It would be like Isiah joining the Lakers after the 88 Finals.
