Football is no longer a meritocracy
I won't link a story from the Freep, but it has Carlo Kemp's name in the title. Go find it if you want to... Essentially, Coach Harbaugh switched things up - football is no longer a meritocracy, its a cage match!
“We’re a total of 103 on the team,” he said. “There’s no difference between scholarship and nonscholarship to me. That’s the team, 103 right now. There’ll be 22 more coming. Plus preferred walk-ons coming as well. We’ve got to be 105 when we start training camp. Cage match to begin on Feb. 29.” ...
“It’s always a competitive thing is happening at whatever positon it’s at. That’ll be something that’s happening at quite a few positions. Might as well say all of them. Nothing’s set in stone. As we said, it is a meritocracy. Cage match. Let’s move from meritocracy to cage match.”

Just literally one of the best characters ever.

I have to confess this is one of the few Office quotes I've never really understood. Why is this funny? Even if cage matches didn't work, you wouldn't expect people to remain in the cage indefinitely.
February 21st, 2016 at 12:06 AM ^
That's why it's funny. Michael Scott would expect people to remain in the cage indefinitely.
Much like he expected some result from simply shouting out loud that he was declaring bankruptcy. He's very much a literalist.

Right, but I still don't understand the correlation between them "working" and the number of people in the cage. It doesn't make any sense. Even taken literally, why would everyone remain in the cage if they didn't work?
February 21st, 2016 at 12:33 AM ^
Because the cage only unlocks when there's a winner. If cage matches didn't "work" (i.e., produce a winner), then everyone would still be locked in the cage.
Michael can't imagine any other scenario (like you, I, or any normal person could) explaining how people would get out of the cage, therefore cage matches must work.

Nice fantasy, but the reality is that even a crappy or washed up professional fighter can easily dispatch most amateurs, especially the "toughgest guy" in your local bar.

I read the whole article, and there is a nice video of Kemp wherein he sounds and looks like a mature 30 year old man. And I don't have the cooties.

He goes on to say: "Cage match. Let's move from meritocracy to cage match." That's why... It can be both - you trump Harbaugh and tell him what his team is!
