OT(?) - Louisville sex scandal investigation
There was a bit of news about this a few weeks ago, but OTL is breaking this morning the extent of went on between 2010-2014. Five ex-players and recruits speaking on the coniditon of anonymity. Looks really bad. Mike and Mike referencing on-campus parties with strippers, stacks of money, and sex with escorts payed for by a graduate assistant.

I'm suuuuurrrre you're right.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:04 AM ^
and you know the NCAA won't do a damn thing. Has there been any statement at all from them since this start breaking a few weeks ago?
October 20th, 2015 at 10:21 AM ^
They aren't going to make any announcements while they are investigating. I know tired jokes about the NCAA are popular here. The NCAA usually comes down pretty hard when they can find witnesses who will talk. It sounds like they have some here.

That was my thought exactly. The money trail is going to implicate Pitino IMO as the grad assistant was wiring funds to these "ladies" to pay for their services. I'm assuming the dollars came from his expense account and somebody had to sign-off on the expense for accounting to reimburse him or cut the check to get him cash.
Who signs off on a grad assistant's expense account? That's the guy who has to be sweating bullets this morning.

Yeah, this is Louisville. They've been doing this stuff for decades.
They are very sophisticated about being slimy. They have to compete with Kentucky after all.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:31 AM ^
I recall another coach who tried to explain why he kept thousands in cash in his desk. In this case, it wll probably be someone else on staff, not Pitino. Either way, there won't be a paper trail documenting how it got there.
October 20th, 2015 at 8:47 AM ^
this means we get the National Championship, right?
October 20th, 2015 at 1:03 PM ^
Did it last longer than 2 minutes?
October 21st, 2015 at 8:16 AM ^
No more than Cincinnati getting the '92 Final Four and Temple getting the '93 Final Four.
October 20th, 2015 at 8:48 AM ^
I'd rather have lost that NC game with John "we had subs, it was crazy" Beilein, who runs a squeaky clean program as far as we can tell than have to take down banners due to someone like Patino and these end results.
Sad part is if UL takes down that NC banner, we don't get it... vacated wins aren't forfeits, sigh.
October 20th, 2015 at 8:52 AM ^
That needs to change. The NCAA needs to bring back forefeits. Fuck "vacations". The humiliation of the forfeit needs to make a comback. The record books need to show that you lost.

The problem with retroactive forfeits is that they jigger the overall and league records of the non-cheating (or not caught!) institutions. That could impact championship claims, etc., that are probably best left intact unless the cheating institution wins a championship.
Maybe the answer would be to have two season records - one the "official" or "locked" league standings record, and one the "corrected" record with asterisks. Because your core idea is very appealing: the school on the other side of the cheater should be getting a W, so long as they're not also shown to have been cheating.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:51 AM ^
You're right that it would mess things up. I'm fine with that. Let Michigan hang a championship banner and claim it.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:58 AM ^
In the instance of the 2013 NCAA MBB championship, it seems like the championship could slide to Michigan. And I'd have no problem displaying it at Crisler. (It would mess things up on the other side of the bracket, but so be it. Better than vacating the title and pretending like 65 other teams did not play their hearts out trying to win the title.
Sort of like when the TdF riders get busted for PEDs, and they post facto award the championship to the next "clean" rider.
October 20th, 2015 at 9:47 AM ^
Exactly. Either blow the system up or enforce it consistently. As as program that (now) runs things clean as a whistle and faces the headwind of high academic standing, we stand to benefit from stronger, more consistent enforcement.
October 20th, 2015 at 9:00 AM ^
We could, perhaps, simply unilaterally clam the title if it were vacated. No one would "officially" be champion from that year, but IIRC, many schools to this retroactively for football national championships where the official results are ambiguous.

A friend of mine got to attend M basketball practice a week or so ago and he was talking to Beilein about the national championship game and the terrible call on Trey's block. Beilein quipped "I guess we didn't have enough prostitutes"

I'm not naming names, but my friend is not a "random guy" attending practice. He is well connected with folks in the bball program. He also says that Moritz Wagner is the most competitive guy on the team. He hates to lose at anything.

yes, i think we can safely say that the chair of the ncaa ethics committee probably runs a pretty clean program. not that an ncaa stamp of approval means jack doody, but still. pretty sure you will not find a cleaner coach in the country.
October 20th, 2015 at 12:38 PM ^
in basketball because of another program cheating, is a headline that I could live without. Not to mention, every time that championship is referenced it comes with the asterick that it was a forfeited championship. Not the kind of championship I'm looking for.

Why would they do this? They don't know anything about these guys. Aren't they afraid of getting some kind of disease?
They certainly can't be niave enough to think they are somehow going to latch on to a future NBA player by sleeping with a high school kid on one of his several recruiting trips.
If he sleeps with you, a random girl, on a recruiting trip, he ain't marrying you.

If I'm 18 years old, and a star athlete being recruited by top programs, I'm sure as hell visiting all the schools known for showing their recruits a good time.
Take their $ and girls, then go to Michigan anyway.

Those poor exploited athletes.

If a company hired a prostitute to get you to take a job, then didn't pay you anything to do that job, would you think you were being treated fairly?
October 20th, 2015 at 8:54 AM ^
Anything not Michigan sports related or anything not referencing Michigan at all, is OT. Then again, the OT rule only seems to apply when the Mods want to enforce it. Anyways, I digress.
Obviously Pitino knew about this the whole time. I'm not judging the man, but this is the same guy that was having an affair with a waitress...this whole situation never seemed like a stretch to me. Say what you want about the four letter, but they make sure to have all their ducks in a row before breaking major news. I can't remember a situation they have ever been wrong or incorrectly informed on....
