WAYYYY OT: Brits Attempting to Crowdsource Lifesize LOTR City for 1.85 billion pounds
Some architects and structural engineers in England are trying to raise an insane amount of money to build a life-size Lord of the Rings city.
I'm posting this just for the sheer absurdity of the attempt:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/realise-minas-tirith#/story
In order to realize their goal, they need to raise 1.85 billion pounds in just 60 days. That's nearly $2.9 billion in American dollars.
If this city was somehow built, would you have any desire to live in it? Visit it?
EDIT: Title changed to comply with nerd guidelines.

Everyone knows you properly abbreviate it "LOTR".

They would be better off building and extension off of Universal Studios across the park from Harry Potter

Hope this story is just a publicity stunt, if not i'm moving to the moon.
Can someone tell me how to stream Michigan games from the moon?

You could feed and clothe a lot of peope with that money.

Well sure, but you could say that about a lot of things. Cowboy Stadium cost a $1B, that's just as useless in the grand scheme of things, as are a lot of 8 and 9 figure structures across the globe.

Of all the cities in LOTR, why Minas Tirith? I feel like Rivendell would be much cooler.

It is one of the top 5 top selling books of all time sooooo you'd probably be in the minority.

You almost need to watch them together. I know my wife said rather too loudly in the theater, "They're not out of the Shire yet?" I thought the guy in front of us was going to throw down.
That said, a movie I find boring and very overrated is the Big Lebowski. To each their own.

Then I stopped and thought about it and wondered how many people you could feed and clothe, or how much that would help towards curing Alzheimer's, or providing reliable solar energy, or anything that, you know, the world actually needs.

I don't see a big problem with this, what with all the world's pressing issues having been resolved.

Those of us that comment on a blog devoted to a sport played by our favorite team in a giant stadium that generates millions of dollars of our fandom and sits empty the rest of the year probably shouldn't be pointing fingers at how a crowd might fund a living community with commercial and private properties for self-sustainability in addition to revenues from tourism.

Call me a debbie downer, but what a collosal waste of money that would be. I'll be disappointed if they get to 1%

Eh, nevermind.

Not to mention, it already seems to exist (kinda):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Saint-Michel
Mont Saint-Michel was the inspiration for the design of Minas Tirith in the film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

don't build cities like they used to.

and I'll donate. Nothing against the Scots, just think it would be cooler. Literally. Ok I'm done.

uh.. this feels sorta scammish. I believe Indiegogo will collect money regardless of whether the project is sufficiently funded, unlike kickstarter which only collects money if it reaches complete funding.
I hope they're planning to do something smaller scale if they don't get the money but it sounds pretty sketchy to me.

Go big or go home. Perhaps they should just go have a chat with Sir Richard Branson. Might go well as a second residence when he doesn't want to hang around his island in the Caribbean.
