OT: UNC and Wake Forest Schedule "Non-Conference" Home and Home Series
Saw this on Reddit and thought this would be an interesting conversation here considering Michigan hasn't played Wisconsin in 5 years and counting... I wonder if B1G schools will follow suit?

Apparently they wouldn't play each other again for 7 years on their conference schedule if they didn't schedule this aka conferences are expanding way too much.

Palm.
Just do the Super-Conferences. This is just getting wierd now.

a real need (and likely fan desire). Could even prove an informal tie-breaker to pollsters and bowls if the picture is muddy at the end of the conference year.
January 26th, 2015 at 2:25 PM ^
Haven't we done them already?

Celebrity Hottub is particularly good on this:
WAKE AND UNC SMASH TIME AND SPACE
" Because this is just a model, there is no way of knowing when - or if - we would reach enough Independence Bowls. It is entirely possible the limit does not exist."

I guess it's good they found a creative solution to the problems created by giant conferences? It's better than a powder puff game against The Chicago School for Deaf Dentists.

I do like CSDD's all white uniforms. Classic.

Sure, CSDD all white uniforms look good when their new, but when they're older, the unis start to yellow. Or, if you get coffee on them, the stains are tough to get out.

Any word on that CB committed to CSDD. I heard he has natural instinicts for where the ball is and he might be open to a flip.

I didn't ... Hear anything...

I'd like to see Michigan play a home and home with Nebraska in non-B1G years. Obviously, I'd rather see the Texas' and Oklahoma's of the world, but if I had to settle for a one off with Hawaii or home and home with Nebraska, you obvioulsly know what I'd rather see in a September primetime game.
January 26th, 2015 at 1:40 PM ^
Didn't Michigan play MSU in a non conference basketball game at some time in the last ten years? One of the years they were only scheduled to play once?
Perhaps I'm hallucinating...

Thanks,though I was way off with the last ten years part of the memory.

At present, with 7 B1G West teams and only 2 crossover games, we miss 5 B1G West teams each year. Beginning in 2016, the B1G will switch to 3 crossover games / 9 B1G Games each year.
Cross-over games from 2015 - 2019
B1G West Opp. | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Wiscy | H | A | H | A | |
Minny | A | H | |||
Neb | H | ||||
Iowa | A | H | |||
NW | H | A | |||
Illini | H | A | |||
Purdue | A |

That's really depressing that we play Purdue once in the next 5 seasons, and have three years where the Jug isn't up for grabs.
January 26th, 2015 at 1:45 PM ^
a much tougher non-conference schedule across the board. Let's play some SEC and Pac-12 teams instead of MAC cupcakes every year.
I understand that it's beneficial to play some easy ones just to get the team in shape, but I'd still rather see a higher level of competition amongst the P5 Conferences.
January 26th, 2015 at 1:52 PM ^
As of right now, there isn't a single MAC team on UM's football schedule for the rest of the decade. I think there are still 3 open slots (2 in 2019 and 1 in 2018) so that might change.
January 26th, 2015 at 2:34 PM ^
I should have been more specific. I meant non-P5 teams.
I like that we scheduled Alabama the other year, even though we got our asses kicked. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.
January 26th, 2015 at 2:32 PM ^
Cupcakes like Toledo?
January 26th, 2015 at 1:45 PM ^
sucks that we haven't played wisonsin in 5 years but after the last time we played them and how well they have done in those last 5 years i'm kind of glad that we haven't...
that game in 2010 might have been one of the more depressing things i have ever seen... they ran what 30 straight running plays and we couldn't stop them at all...

As far as I'm concerned, Wisconsin is not in our conference anymore. Wisconsin was always a game I looked forward to and it had something for everybody. A lot of instate kids have some sort of friend/family connection to Wisconsin and all the East Coast kids know someone who goes there.
All that gone for the sake of Rutgers and Nebraska. Thanks Delaney!!!

No, I'm holding my head high despite the inhumanity
January 26th, 2015 at 1:48 PM ^
All I remember from Michigan v. Wisconsin was John Thompson or Obi Ezeh pick 6ing down the M sideline to help M to a victory over the most overrated #8 team in the country. And there was a bailout 2 point conversion penalty IIRC that stopped Wisco from tying up the game late. That damn left QB (it wasn't stocco or brooks bollinger who were at UW for 33 years I know that)
January 26th, 2015 at 2:30 PM ^
January 26th, 2015 at 2:57 PM ^
Could have been 35-0, but Wiscy failed to capitalize w/ touchdowns.
January 26th, 2015 at 2:40 PM ^
It was Johnny Thompson with the pick-six off a batted pass from K-State transfer Allan Evridge. The penalty on the 2-point was a ticky-tack call but also properly whistled as Travis Beckum didn't line up correctly and thus was ineligible.
But yeah, that Wisconsin team was pretty overrated. They ended the season 7-5 (3-5) after a 3-0 start (two cupcakes and a solid win at #21 Fresno State).

Does ACC play 8 or 9 in conf games. Doesnt sound like much but adding 1 more conf game (hence 1 more cross over) would help alleviate this to a degree. I know the Pac 12 is that way and the Big 12 is but the Big 12 due to necessity not divisions. SEC and Big 10 are 8 games - not sure on ACC.

Wisco and Michigan both have gone through 2 coaching changes since we played each other. We need 9 conference games
January 26th, 2015 at 2:00 PM ^
we switch to 9 games, and also play Wisconsin (at home). Your wish granted!
January 26th, 2015 at 2:24 PM ^
Hoke never faced Wisconsin and Andersen never faced Michigan. While, both short careers, seems a little crazy. But the 9 game schedule should help.

January 26th, 2015 at 2:09 PM ^
Nothing quite shows the value of conference expansion like teams in the same state having to schedule a non-conference game so that they actually play each other more than twice a decade.
January 26th, 2015 at 2:36 PM ^
This move is to help drive ticket sales for these 2 programs. I could see Indiana and Illinois or something similar happen in the big 10.
January 26th, 2015 at 2:40 PM ^
Michigan and Wisconsin are scheduled to meet every year from 2016-2019. However, Michigan is only scheduled to face Nebraska once in that time span (2018). This is why a nine game schedule is necesssary in a 14 team conference, and even then you still don't face somes teams as much as would be liked by fans. The ACC and SEC need to get with it and move to a nine game conference schedule so schools like Wake Forest and UNC do not have to schedule this way.
January 26th, 2015 at 2:59 PM ^
I recall there being talk of Michigan and Minnesota doing something similar when Michigan was trying to find a "special" opponent for the home opener to celebrate the completed stadium renovations in 2010. I don't know if those rumors came from the AD or from the fans, though.

January 26th, 2015 at 3:27 PM ^
You know, if the ACC had not shot down the idea of going to the nine-game conference schedule, this may not be quite the dilemma that it seems to be now. That being said, this "non-conference" game also fulfills the ACC requirement of having the Power 5 team in the OOC schedule too, except that if this catches on it will probably sink each team's SOS...but then it IS UNC-Wake Forest, so we're not talking perennial playoff threats.
January 26th, 2015 at 4:54 PM ^
how would this affect the playoff commitees decision? Not like UNC or Wake have a great chance of making the playoffs but if other teams play conference members as nc games i wonder how the commitee would weigh those wins. I would much rather play wisconsin in the nonconference than play app st
