Louisville set to hire Charleston coach Kelsey
Wonder if he was on our short list. Anyway, with this tourney going on, I'm craving info on what our new coach May is gonna do with assistants and transfers.
It feels as if we got the right one in May.
I too am eager for more info but I'm happy to wait, trusting he'll do it right.
Yah, I like our hire too. Kelsey's work looks decent and I hope he was on our list yet hadn't heard any rumblings.
Or are they?? Conflicting reports on this
Everyone is just qualifying their statements because of what happened last time. The most cautious one is this:
Here is what I have on Louisville, per sources. Pat Kelsey has not agreed to become U of L’s next coach, nor has he signed any papers, nor has there been a verbal promise to Kelsey to be the next coach. Could get there fast, but as of this moment, U of L/Kelsey do not have a deal
(What happened to embeds?)
Pretty much everyone else is saying "barring anything unforeseen..."
Yeah, this is what I am seeing as well. Most everyone is saying it will be Kelsey barring some showstopper essentially, but he hasn't signed anything as of yet.
Yah that's why I said "set to". Could be them trying for leverage on Pitino.
Sorry, wrong Charleston.
Once his name started coming up in the Louisville search I wondered why he wasn't ever listed as an option for us with Schertz, Medved, etc. Seems like a decent hire.
looks like he had decent to good run at Winthrop before landing at Charleston but not mind-blowing and was there for 8 years. Charleston he's done well with but might be a guy you'd like to see a little more mid major dominance from before stepping up to big leagues? Not sure but does seem like a viable candidate along with the others named in our coaching search. Be interested to see how his teams stack up on Kenpom
I was hoping that Louisville as going to hire Dick...err...Richard Pitino. It's fun to watch Lobo fans lose their minds when a successful coach leaves for greener pastures (see: Alford, Steve).
I assume your location is what makes New Mexico schadenfreude so fun for you. But objectively speaking, that is not what would have made Richard Pitino going to Louisville so funny.
Yup! Lobo fans are delusional in that they think the UNM job is a cherry (pun intended; their colors are cherry and silver) one.
But the laughs that would have come with Junior Pitino taking over Louisville would've been great and would have lasted longer than his dad did with that waitress from the Italian joint.
Love seeing Michigan beat out Louisville for their top choice then watch the Louisville fans try to back track and down play how good May has been.
I think Brian left him off the short list because he does not enough of a track record. Charleston plays in the CAA, which too many tiers removed from the major conference. Meanwhile, Kelsey has just three years at Charleston and produced middling KenPom finishes of 144, 71, and 100.
IIRC from listening to the podcast, Brian and Co. were not as high on him because he’s at a school that spends significantly more on its athletic resources compared to its conference counterparts (like GCU does), so, while he may be a really good coach, we don’t know if he’s been working with built-in advantages that other schools around him simply did not have.
I remember Dayton and Grand Canyon getting dinged for overspending, but not Charleston. I think Brian discounted Kelsey because he does not have a track record of mid-major success.
FWIW I also remembered them being worried about the resource disparity of Charleston vs the rest of their conference.
Louisville's reputation is stuck on cheater. Since Pitino has somehow rehabilitated himself at St. Johns, Louisville might as well hire him again.
Let's go, I didn't want them to hire Abdur Rahim and that was all I cared about.

In other words, "I wonder what the poor folks are up to?"
