MSU Hockey Coach Nightingale Extended, paid $$$$
$700k per year, up from either $350k or $450k (can't recall). Anyone know the salaries of other coaches besides Naurato ($400k)?
FWIW, M offered Bakitch (in response to the title series a few years ago): $500k. Not sure if they countered Clemson or not.
Ishbia lights his cigars with $700k.
Unlike Staee's past quick decision to extend a big contract to a coach that had been with them only a short time, this is probably a good move.
phone sex etiquette undoubtedly is explicitly defined in the contract
The way he's turned around the smoldering dumpster fire that has been Sparty Hockey since Ron Mason makes him worthy of a nice bump imo. It appears to be a real program again and you can't argue with a B1G title.
Or maybe, if we're lucky, this season was a complete fluke from having a great goalie and Sparty can go back to mediocrity while paying the coach a bunch of money.
I think the truth lies somewhere in between. Augustine covers up a lot of warts for them, considering that we outplayed them in probably 3 of the 4 games, and went 1-3. And Augustine already had a strong connection to Nightingale, so we will see if he can continue to bring in top guys that are not already connected to him.
However, they were really bad before he got there, so the improvement clearly goes beyond just the goaltender.
What if Augustine is just their Kenneth Walker III? He made Staae football look legit, but a lot people came back down to earth once he left. This isn't based on any stats, but it felt like Payton Thorne tailed off quick without KWIII. Here's hoping for a repeat of that, but on the ice.
They're back to being competitive after seemingly a decade+ of being anywhere between bad and horrible. I don't quite see them consistently winning the conference title; basically any other year they'd have finished 2nd/3rd behind Minny and/or UM. But they're solid and have a great goalie in Augustine. Repeating that magic, though, is the rub here.
Great move on their part. He has completely turned that program around.
I was hoping an NHL team would scoop him up.
Doesn't mean they still can't (*fingers crossed*)...
I was hoping we could steal their goaltender.
I have some bad news for you, but he was a Michigan commit who flipped....
Hope they don't have any new harassment advisors coming in.. could be a disaster!
Funny you mention that...
Rape survivor Brenda Tracy to sue Michigan State, Mel Tucker for $75 million in damages
Bakich got paid $6.25M over 6 years from Clemson
B10 hockey interest > B10 baseball interest
and pay will likely reflect that
B10 hockey interest > B10 baseball interest
For me it's: B10 hockey interest > B10 baseball interest > B10 basketball interest...
...until UM sorts out the Howard sitch.
Michigan has a basketball team?
Yes, they’re playing in the BTT tonight at 9PM.
I think Bama has football analysts making more than $700k
Yeah because college hockey and college football are equal in revenue
Nightingale has done a hell of a job at MSU. To turn that program around in 2 years, B1G champ in 3 is nothing short of amazing.
Agree, great job
Warde should have done that with Bakich. Give him a nice salary bump and keep him in Ann Arbor.
Fire Warde
I do not live in the state of Michigan, but the fact that a bunch of clowns in suits at MSU make these decisions knowing that state taxpayers will foot the bill for their incompetence is not a source of joy.
You watching a commercial on gameday foots the bill.
Then I feel even worse. Perhaps my statement did not focus clearly enough on my concern, which is the lack of accountability more than the sums or sources of the funds spent.
$700K is a lot for a college hockey coach. He has done a good job of turning the FYS goons into a competitor.
Hahahah, one good, first season, what could go wrong?
Mel having a good year and getting $90MM guaranteed over 10 years based on one win over Michigan is very, very different than Nightingale quickly turning their program into one of the best in the B1G (with a regular-season conference championship and NCAA tourney bid to show for it) and getting 600k per year with various bonuses rolled in (actually scanned the article).
I saw his pops this morning. Quite happy.
