Game Thread: Women's hoops - Michigan at Iowa - 8:00 pm ET - Peacock - Caitlin Clark
Michigan's women's hoops team travels to Iowa City to face Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes.
Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 pm and will be broadcast on Peacock.
Iowa's ranked fourth in the country - their overall record is 22-3, with an 11-3 B1G record. Michigan is 16-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play.
Tickets are in demand - going for about $200 / per seat. There's a lot of attention with Caitlin Clark on the floor and she's very close to setting the career scoring record.
Will you watch? Any thoughts to share?

She is 8 points from the NCAA Women's scoring record.
She is like >1000 points from the actual college women's record, set in the 1970s, before the NCAA took control over women's hoops.
February 15th, 2024 at 5:12 PM ^
To my knowledge, Lynette Woodard of Kansas (1977–81) is the all-time women's college basketball scoring leader with 3,649 points, which means Clark is only 129 points shy of the women's record, not over a thousand.
February 15th, 2024 at 5:29 PM ^
That's the NCAA record. Not the college record.
Pearl Moore, who played at a tiny school called Fancis Marion, scored 4,061 career points from 1975-79. At the time, women's hoops was governed by the AIAW, not the NCAA. The AIAW had tiny schools and what we now call D-I schools competing side by side. Immaculata College was the dynasty of women's college hoops in the 1970s. I'm not even sure that would be D-III these days.
I did make a mistake, I thought Caitlin was in mid-2000 points, not mid-3000. So you are right, it's not 1000 pts off. But she needs to get over 4K to get the all-time record.
February 15th, 2024 at 7:02 PM ^
Well, Woodard was also playing during the AIAW days, but you're right, Moore does seem to be the leader. Oddly enough, a lot of sites that track points from those days don't even list Moore and crown Woodard as the champ, which I guess speaks to the lack of good records from those days more than anything else.

No I will not watch. I feel like I curse women's basketball. Every time I watch there are several air balls and missed wide open layups.
February 15th, 2024 at 10:10 PM ^
I would like to watch, but Peacock is not getting my money.
February 15th, 2024 at 5:04 PM ^
It's on the 'cock, so nope, will not watch. Otherwise I'd probably have it on as background noise.
Caitlin Clark is a terrific player and (usually) worth the price of admission, but hundreds of dollars for a ticket to a regular season game is crazy.
February 15th, 2024 at 5:14 PM ^
that's what I say about the price of a regular season football game.... but what'cha gonna do ??
February 15th, 2024 at 5:44 PM ^
Of course it's on fucking Peacock.
o/u 3.5 shots for her to break record
February 15th, 2024 at 8:10 PM ^
It only took her three. And of course, she broke it on a logo 3.
February 15th, 2024 at 8:24 PM ^
That happened fast!
February 15th, 2024 at 8:08 PM ^
the gold room is where the party's at yo. Winning is the objective. Let's go Blue.
February 15th, 2024 at 8:15 PM ^
Late in the 1st quarter - Michigan is shooting 67% from the floor - and down by seven.. 24-17.
February 15th, 2024 at 8:16 PM ^
Clark might be going supernova here, Jesus.
February 15th, 2024 at 8:19 PM ^
Wow. What's the single game record? KC is on pace for a doozy!
(Again...this is boxscore/gamecasting cuz ya know, Peacock)
February 15th, 2024 at 8:24 PM ^
It's 61
February 15th, 2024 at 8:21 PM ^
iowa on pace for 132 so things should get better...
sports stupidity that this is on peacock. protect deep space with hand in face D on clark
February 15th, 2024 at 8:22 PM ^
Caitlin Clark has 23 points in the first quarter. On pace for 92 points tonight.
February 15th, 2024 at 10:12 PM ^
Hopefully she just starts punting the ball.

She's really good regardless, but I always get so frustrated watching Laila Phelia. She's so incredible at creating shots, especially near the basket, that if she was just a better finisher she would be one of the best players in the country. 1 for 7 so far in this one, 1 for 5 on 2s.
February 15th, 2024 at 8:23 PM ^
End of 1st quarter, Michigan’s shooting 58+% from the floor - on pace for almost 90 points - and down eleven.. 33-22.
Caitlin Clark has 23 of the Hawkeyes 33 first quarter points.
February 15th, 2024 at 8:35 PM ^
Clark has scored or assisted on all but one of Iowa's FGs. Just kind of regular Caitlin Clark things.
February 15th, 2024 at 8:39 PM ^
Do we not have any 3pt shooters this season?
February 15th, 2024 at 9:37 PM ^
Best 3 point shooting percentage since the 2017-2018 season. Hobbs, Phelia, Brett, Hansen all shoot it between 34.5 and 38.6% with pretty good volume (80+ attempts).
February 16th, 2024 at 7:12 AM ^
They're just an average 3 pt shooting team at 35% which isn't bad but Michigan 3 pt shooting has never been great under KBA. Not sure if it's an emphasis or priority under KBA.
February 16th, 2024 at 11:36 AM ^
48th is still average and 35% is average in the grand scheme of things. You want them to be in the high 30s.
February 16th, 2024 at 11:47 PM ^
It's not really being obtuse. 35% is not a good number, it's average. KBA has never prioritized shooting even with a dominant inside presence.
Also, KBA also never prioritized taking care of the ball as well. There's a clear ceiling with KBA's coached team until she fixes both of them. Is she Michigan's best coach in the WBB program's history? Yes. You also have to recognize that KBA has blind spot when it comes to team building.
February 18th, 2024 at 3:13 PM ^
Now, you're being obtuse.

Clark's had an amazing career but I do wonder how Iowa will look when she's gone after this year - they looked like a pretty average team with one superstar sort of carrying them to a win.
February 15th, 2024 at 10:30 PM ^
I was thinking about that during the game. They're certainly playing like that, but I wonder if they'd run things differently if she wasn't there and still be about as good as we are
February 16th, 2024 at 5:10 AM ^
there's some chatter in iowa city that clark might come back for her covid year, actually. that's not just wishful thinking - she can make as much in endorsements, and the WNBA salary cap is honestly just crazy low (as in, a TEAM cap of $1.4 million, or thereabouts). plus she gets the adoration of an entire state of drooling sycophants. i've been to clark's B1G tournaments, and iowa fans are worst fans i've ever seen, just screaming in ecstasy every time clark breathes and rending their garments at the injustice of it all when anyone gets in her zip code on the defensive end. sparty and ohio state people are personally loathsome, but at least some of them know ball. probably. not iowa fans, brother.
anyhoo. they'll be good. stuelke will be the lead dog on the offensive end, albeit as an inside scorer. their problem will be the same as it has been for the entirety of bluders tenure there - they're a truly terrible defensive team. herhoopstats.com recently had them as the 167th in defense, which is the BEST they've been since they started keeping stats (!). pace and SOS adjustments get them to 23rd, last i looked...but that doesn't really pass the eye test - if last night was the first time you've seen them, it was pretty indicative. lighting it up offensively but a layup drill on the other end. they can't get a stop, like, ever. it ain't getting better next year. iowa basketball, man. ever is it so.

I don’t follow women’s hoops closely. Caitlin’s gotten a lot of attention - and, seemingly, raised the awareness of women’s athletics. That’s a good thing.
I cannot intelligently comment of the strengths and weaknesses of Iowa’s women’s team. It does seem like Clark is a good role model for girls - and, if she’s pulling in more from NIL with State Farm and other endorsements - my thought is - that great for her.
I’m unsure of the extent of Clark’s NIL deals - but, at least from what I’ve seen (specifically, State Farm commercials on BTN) - they seem appropriate and she’s doing something to earn her NIL. (As a point of reference - I feel the same way about men’s NIL - please do something to reflect the endorsement agreement.)
February 16th, 2024 at 8:29 AM ^
Besides State Farm she has deals with Nike, Gatorade, Goldman Sachs, Buick, Hy-vee, Topps, Bose.
February 16th, 2024 at 11:41 AM ^
I wonder too if her decision to return might not also be influenced a bit by the WNBA draft order. With Indiana having the first pick, is that a place she'd be excited to play? They've been bad, but they have good players in Boston, Smith, & Mitchell. Or...would she prefer to go back to Iowa for a year, suck up all that NIL money, make the scoring mark unreachable for anyone else ever, and roll the dice with who gets the number one overall pick next year.
February 15th, 2024 at 10:42 PM ^
I’m glad that you guys are on the ‘cock now. I need to get off of it. I have standard ’cock that must be included with my cable pkg, but I am not getting any premium ’cock.
February 15th, 2024 at 11:01 PM ^
That's--and this may be obvious--what she said. With all due deference to Title IX and women's basketball.

If UM WBB played away (Dug-less) UM MBB, who would win? Would anybody care?
Nice game for Clark. Is it softball season? When do the Olympics start? Oh crap...that madness thing is still coming yet. Sigh...
February 16th, 2024 at 11:37 AM ^
Michigan MBB would dominate Michigan WBB without a question even without Dug. There is a reason why WBB has male practice players and they have real restrictions on what they can do against the women players during practice aka can't be too physical, can't dunk, etc.
