Vrabel to help Water Boy at Wisconsin
February 8th, 2024 at 11:46 AM ^
He's going to be the HC at Ohio next season. It's all aligning.
February 8th, 2024 at 11:47 AM ^
I dont think so. Osu is too dumb to go for nfl style coaching. They prefer Hopping Penguins name Tweeter or Skeeter and Benjamins. The egos on that osu team should be fun to watch when they lose a game.
February 8th, 2024 at 11:54 AM ^
We'll see. The secret is out for Michigan's streak (Ravens defense against pro-style passing offense), so anything short of a national championship probably gets OSU to change it up.
February 8th, 2024 at 11:59 AM ^
If they beat us, Day buys himself another year. If he loses again he'll be fired before we leave the field.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:42 PM ^
If Michigan didn't win it all this year, sure, but I don't think OSU's boosters would be satisfied with just winning The Game after that.
February 8th, 2024 at 1:16 PM ^
Agree. With their recruiting and the high caliber transfers recently, the expectation will be to beat us, win the B1G and have a very strong showing in the Playoffs - possibly to win it all. The pressure has been cranked up on Eddie Munster.
February 8th, 2024 at 2:57 PM ^
They probably have the highest payroll in the nation this year and had a bunch of people come back who, had they developed better, should have gone pro. If Day doesn't beat us and win at least one playoff game he's going to be in trouble.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:14 PM ^
Sadly that would be peak Ohio and a repeat of the Urban Meyer situation where Vrabel gets to be coach in waiting and able to step right in and the program doesn't miss a beat, whereas in Ann Arbor every coaching transition includes PAIN.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:27 PM ^
Do we really know that would be the case? I don't think Vrabel would be a bad coach at OSU by any means, but comparing that kind of transition to what Meyer had at OSU probably isn't fair.
Urban Meyer has an argument to be considered the greatest college football coach in history who is not named Nick Saban, and he walked into the most talented roster in the Big Ten by several country miles. It was always fair to assume there would be minimal to no transition costs with him.
Vrabel would have a stacked roster to walk into, for sure, but is he on the same level of college coach that Meyer was? I highly doubt it. Vrabel has also been out of the college game for ten years, and the landscape of college football has shifted twenty times since then. Its fair to assume his transition could have some bumps and bruises. On a relative scale for OSU, sure, but I don't think it would be a seamless Meyer-esque transition.

It would seem to me that if hired, Vrabel would bring a mindset of more toughness, emphasize better line play, more rushing, etc, and less basketball on grass like Day seems to favor. This transition would take a while to turn over the roster to get suitable players, but in the long run it would be interesting.
February 8th, 2024 at 2:39 PM ^
I think Vrabel would do a Harbaugh, go in , change the culture and would go back to the NFL at the first chance he got.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:22 PM ^
There's no chance that guy wants anything to do with dealing with this shit in college now.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:35 PM ^
Why wouldn't he, when OSU is taking this shit and painting a recruiting and talent level Picasso with it as we speak? No one is benefitting more right now than OSU.
February 8th, 2024 at 11:46 AM ^
Have we reached a new low on sources? No, no... we're just getting started
February 8th, 2024 at 12:26 PM ^
I'm mostly confused about the "no source" claim for this reason:
That Fickell was inviting Vrabel to be around the team this year was front-page news on ESPN this morning.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:37 PM ^
I dont look at espn or any other sites not named mgoblog.
February 8th, 2024 at 11:48 AM ^
there's a Water Boy - Linebacker - Needle Dick joke in here somewhere
February 8th, 2024 at 12:00 PM ^
What the fuck is this? Who is "Water Boy" and why is Vrabel helping him at Wisconsin?
February 8th, 2024 at 12:04 PM ^
Fickell, since he looks like Sandler in the movie and they are both buckeyes (I'm lazy so won't look this up, but assume they were together as coaches at the same time at OSU).
February 11th, 2024 at 9:46 AM ^
they were starters on the same DL at OSU.Vrable was a DE and Fickle was the nose guard.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:03 PM ^
Isn't all sources " someone I trust, told me " ???
February 8th, 2024 at 12:06 PM ^
If Counterstrike counts as "someone I trust," then yes.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:05 PM ^
Shae, words from you are source enough.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:07 PM ^
It's times like these that i really appreciate that our message board isn't like those other message boards.......
February 8th, 2024 at 12:11 PM ^
Water sucks! Gatorade is better.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:27 PM ^
Waterboy is coming for you.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:13 PM ^
As a Titans fan, Vrabel sucks lol
Dude was hella overrated and basically rode a hot Tannehill for 1.5 seasons before he crashed back to earth post-Arthur Smith leaving to coach the Falcons.
Vrabel had unfortunate injury luck in 2021 (though not too daunting) and 2022, but was always in full meathead mode and never adjusted + drove off good coaches + was a pain to work with + very combative apparently.
Also, he displayed no ability to produce results as a coordinator, and would have likely been fired in Houston had he stayed another year. So unless you are hiring him as a head coach, you likely aren't getting much of a coach.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:15 PM ^
Lewan spoke a bit regarding Vrabel's personality and it didn't sound like he would be well tolerated in a college locker room these days. He alluded that his personality is the biggest reason why no other pro team went after him. Can't say if this is 100% accurate but it came from someone who knows him well. Btw, Lewan likes Vrabel and thinks NFL teams are making a mistake.
Talking about OSU, rumor is Chip Kelly might leave UCLA to become Day's OC if BoB leaves to become BC's HC.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:49 PM ^
Chip is also in consideration for the Seattle Seahawks OC job. Macdonald is also looking at Alabama OC Ryan Grubb and Lions Passing Game Coordinator Tanner Engstrand.
February 8th, 2024 at 12:22 PM ^
I thought for sure that the OP would always bottom out as useless. I was wrong. Now s/he is taking up space on the board.
A little clarity: It doesn't matter if Vrabel winds up on Fickell's staff. We'll still have a bad post with no sourcing.
February 8th, 2024 at 1:30 PM ^
No way. Everyone knows that Mike Vrabel is too big and intimidating to be hired by normal sized people.
