Kyle McCord enters transfer portal
December 4th, 2023 at 6:43 AM ^
Anyone considering playing for OSU should look at this. They ran a guy out of town for going 11-1 and not living up to the standard set by the current NFL rookie of the year (possibly even the MVP). Who would want to deal with that?
December 4th, 2023 at 7:19 AM ^
So meaningless bowl game season has started
December 4th, 2023 at 7:25 AM ^
I have a feeling he may opt out, call it a hunch.
December 4th, 2023 at 7:26 AM ^
I would love to see them do the selections AFTER the portal, but it's just not possible.
If they are going to knock FSU for not having their starting QB because he's injured. They should be knocking all of these other schools who have starters in the portal or sitting because they don't want to get hurt before they go into the draft (which I agree with, but that doesn't mean Caleb Williams-less USC should get the same bowl selection).

Kind of a facial to the Cotton Bowl and non College Football Playoff Bowl Games. Times are changing. Makes the culture of team 144 even more special and unusual imho.

Makes the culture of team 144 even more special and unusual imho.
Underrated!
December 4th, 2023 at 7:39 AM ^
Stroud couldn’t beat Michigan either
December 4th, 2023 at 8:02 AM ^
Seemed like he met the exact same standard and was one win over Mizzou from exceeding it.
December 4th, 2023 at 9:01 AM ^
According to my OSU acquaintances it’s because they’re bringing in Arch Manning. It might be wishful thinking.
December 4th, 2023 at 9:20 AM ^
I am sure OSU has a plan and getting a QB has worked out for them in the past (see J. Fields), but something is broke in Columbus. This isn't 2019 where your biggest rival is playing some of the best football in the history of their school. We have won the trenches 3 years in a row and next year is going to be so pressure packed for OSU that bringing in a new QB that has never experienced this rivalry may not be the best idea. I do think Ryan Day seems to be fantastic at developing QBs but seeing McCord who has been there now 3 years makes you wonder if that may even be a bit overblown. I know Michigan is losing a lot of players after this season, but depending upon who we pick up in the transfer portal and if JJ comes back, The Game will be a pickem next year. Ryan Day's job is absolutely on the line in next year's game. If is a great feeling that for the next almost month Michigan is going to be talked about over and over and over while OSU just sits on the sideline. I am just thankful Ryan Day didn't enter in the portal. Go Blue!
December 4th, 2023 at 9:23 AM ^
I would challenge winning in the trenches this year. If anything it was a stalemate.
December 4th, 2023 at 10:44 AM ^
Correct.
. . . if not for the fact that Michigan on defense played the game with one linebacker tied behind the LoS.
Michigan's whole plan was to fight OSU to a stalemate with light boxes. That's the MHJ effect, but OSU didn't pose enough of a threat up front to make Michigan stop doing that.
December 4th, 2023 at 9:32 AM ^
It's hard to say if Ryan Day is overblown as a quarterback coach, but I would keep in mind that it's hard to recruit, develop and identify quarterback prospects. Even for somebody who is good at it.
Look at Jeff Tedford. Quarterbacks he coached used to get shit for being system QBs who looked good in college but couldn't make it in the pros. Trent Dilfer, Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller and Akili Smith all were drafted in the first round and all were disappointing at best and outright busts at worst.
But then he coached Aaron Rodgers. (Who I personally can't stand, but the man is a Hall of Fame candidate.)
Day also had multiple QB prospects transfer out of Ohio State before (Quinn Ewers would be the big one, but there was another one at the same time whose name escapes me). Just never an actual starter.
December 4th, 2023 at 11:44 AM ^
As a rival, you always welcome turnover and change for the other team. McCord might have killed us next year.
December 4th, 2023 at 9:52 AM ^
Seems that McCord's development was hurt by Day deciding to pad Stroud's stats by keeping Stroud in games that were blowouts?
December 4th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
I think this attitude has hurt OSU at many positions. The payoff for our approach of playing backups as much as possible is not just seen when an injury occurs, but also when those backups become starters.
December 4th, 2023 at 10:40 AM ^
Everybody does not eat at Ohio.
December 4th, 2023 at 11:51 AM ^
This but. McCord also played really well for a guy who was in his first year in the position. And he would have played better next year. Panicking and letting him go could well backfire big time. Here's hoping.
The fans are ALWAYS willing to hang the regnant powers. They want blood, and it's always tempting to feed the mob. Asking whether the mob is rabid and reactionary is always important, though. Day may have just surrendered something to the mob that he could have used. What OSU just might have done--again, let us hope--is begun the two or three-year adjustment period that will come when Day is fired a year from now. In a game of inches, this could be another inch for Michigan.
Just assuming that your next talented QB will be plug and play is a mistake. I think Harbaugh gets this.
December 4th, 2023 at 12:58 PM ^
You might think next year for The Ohio will be pressure packed but compared to ours their schedule looks like a stick of butter that's been sitting in the sun all day.

Somehow they managed to get only one of the newcomers on the sched. while we got all but UCLA.
December 4th, 2023 at 9:20 AM ^
I initially thought this meant Dante Moore to OSU.
December 4th, 2023 at 9:26 AM ^
^^ This might still be the case…
December 4th, 2023 at 10:58 AM ^
While that would be beyond annoying from an optics standpoint there is no guarantee Moore would be better right away. McCord was perfectly good this year. He was also a five star. Maybe the issue is everything else…including the coaching.
December 4th, 2023 at 11:26 AM ^
Yep. McCord was far better than Moore this year and would likely be better next year, especially with Moore having to learn a new system.
December 4th, 2023 at 11:12 AM ^
I know everyone was saying Riley Leonard to notre dame, but wonder if this changes things for him.
Would they have any interest in DJ Uiagalelei?
December 4th, 2023 at 9:39 AM ^
Wouldn't locking up Arch Manning by this point be CHEATING? I'm sure the OSU fans are demanding that Ryan Day be suspended.
Actually, they might be. :)
December 4th, 2023 at 11:05 AM ^
They're going after Arch Manning because Quinn Ewers wasn't taking their calls.
December 4th, 2023 at 12:58 PM ^
Why would Manning leave Texas? Isn't he a guaranteed starter when Ewers goes to the NFL?
December 4th, 2023 at 9:21 AM ^
not living up to the standard set by the current NFL rookie of the year (possibly even the MVP)
Uh, going 11-1 and losing to Michigan is exactly the standard set by CJ Stroud.
December 4th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
i wish i could upvote this again. and again. and again.
December 4th, 2023 at 9:43 AM ^
Yup. And you have alumni like Maurice Clarrett tweeting at Arch Manning telling him to transfer to OSU the day after the Michigan game. Pretty shitty to undermine your current players. Wouldn’t expect anything less from OSU alums though.
December 4th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
Who? A lot of college aged kids who wanna make 6 or 7 figures and think theyre the next hot NFL QB. Theyll get a really good transfer QB for next season. OSU boosters will redirect the “PI fund” into the “Buy special boy Ryan a top QB fund”
December 4th, 2023 at 11:54 AM ^
'Special Boy.' I like it.
December 4th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
When Ryan Day said he was opening up Bowl practice for a QB competition I was stunned. I don’t fault the competition, non playoff bowl time, but I’m not so sure you take it public.
He has run off Evers and now McCoord. Two five star QBs.
The improvements a QB makes after a year of starting experience can be significant.
McCords problem is he wasn’t born on 3rd base
December 4th, 2023 at 12:54 PM ^
He has run off Evers and now McCoord. Two five star QBs.
To be fair, he didn't run off Ewers; Ewers never wanted to be there. He was a Texas kid that wanted to be at Texas, but Texas law (at least at the time) restricted NIL for high school kids or something (don't remember the exact details). So instead Ewers went to OSU where he was able to get the immediate pay day, and turned around and transferred to Texas the first chance he got. Ewers played OSU, plain and simple...
December 4th, 2023 at 10:45 AM ^
Does he get to keep the Honda, tho??
December 4th, 2023 at 10:53 AM ^
I know it will never happen, but I would love to see McCord at UM
If he led UM to a win over OSU, the meltdown would be the most satisfying ever
December 4th, 2023 at 3:57 PM ^
Though not a fan of the impacts on recruiting continuity that a portal transfer brings to this position, I love this thought. My god it would be sweet. Thanks for the pure evil intent.
December 4th, 2023 at 11:11 AM ^
There is a huge culture problem at OSU and I'm loving it.
Even at SEC football factories like Bama and UGA, they manage to keep the locker room and depth charts relatively in order (albeit Saban has suggested this will become extremely difficult going forward and is probably retiring now).
I think the combo of mercenary football player acquisition (recruiting) + NIL without framework affects all programs....but Ryan Day being such a weak, soft character who is in desperation mode adds to the issues and panic in Columbus.
Harbaugh really broke him, and that program is trending toward Texas A&M level dysfunction more so than UGA death star right now. Feels like an inflection point for their program. Given their ability to dodge bullets in the past, wouldn't bet on them collapsing, but I do believe Day's weakness and inability to galvanize a team could set them back so long as they hold on to him - as they have no true identity or direction at this point.
December 4th, 2023 at 12:45 PM ^
Portal + NIL = Free Agency without a Salary Cap.
It is unsustainable madness.
December 4th, 2023 at 11:38 AM ^
Run out of town and the coach is blaming the QB for the loss because he didn't get it done on the last drive. What kind of coach is that? If I'm a player I'd want the Mike Gundy "I'm a man, criticize me" bit, not this BS. What player would want a coach that is going to throw them under the bus?
December 4th, 2023 at 12:43 PM ^
According to Bucknuts staffer Patrick Murphy, McCord was intending to return to OSU in 2024. But he had a meeting with Day. Day told him it would be an open QB competition in 2024, that McCord wasn't guaranteed the starting job. That led McCord to bail. OSU wasn't looking at the transfer market previously, but with McCord out, they will focus on someone with 1 year of eligibility left (presumably so as to not alienate their younger prospects). NIL was also a factor:
There is also an NIL component to this situation. Being the quarterback at Ohio State comes with its perks, and, in today’s age of college football, that includes money. The team also has to elect how to allocate resources, and, simply put, the valuation on either side did not line up...
Despite conjecture associating the Buckeyes with various quarterbacks that were expected to enter the transfer portal ahead of its opening Monday morning, the Scarlet and Gray were not serious contenders to add another player at the position until McCord elected to depart. That has changed, and Ohio State is now exploring all options, specifically a player with one year of eligibility who would look at this as an opportunity to win and help his NFL Draft stock. A name to keep an eye on is Duke’s Riley Leonard, who was closely linked with Notre Dame but has already heard from the Buckeyes, but this list will continue to grow as more quarterbacks enter the transfer portal.
According to Murphy, OSU will put up NIL money for a transfer, but they won't be the highest bidder. They would prefer someone who wants to play for a "winner" and aren't looking for the highest bid.
December 4th, 2023 at 12:46 PM ^
We are kind of in that same market if JJ leaves.
December 4th, 2023 at 7:13 PM ^
Obviously I hope JJ stays. It's awkward though, because we should really be talking to these potential QB transfers now, but should absolutely not be taking JJ's mind off his next game by making him decide on or even think about this now.
December 4th, 2023 at 6:44 AM ^
That's so not cool
December 4th, 2023 at 6:44 AM ^
Wow. I cannot believe this, when was the last time you saw a starter transfer out of a power like this with no obvious answer to his replacement? Hurts had Tua.
December 4th, 2023 at 6:47 AM ^
Sounds like they might have someone lined up right now who would be a big name. Otherwise why would Ohio State be OK with this?
December 4th, 2023 at 6:48 AM ^
Arch Manning?
December 4th, 2023 at 7:26 AM ^
So he is the "player to be named later" in the Quinn Ewers' transfer.
December 4th, 2023 at 8:46 AM ^
I suspect there is tampering involved.
December 4th, 2023 at 9:11 AM ^
By tampering, do you mean $13 million?
