Sitting in my blind it’s a beautiful morning.
Good luck today. 🦌

How’s the 60 degree weather going to affect the hunting later today?
November 15th, 2023 at 8:15 AM ^
They’re moving pretty good so far. I harvested an 8 pointer about 30 minutes ago.

Congrats! Only seen a handful of does so far

Just harvest a 10. Best opening day I’ve ever had.

Tagged out!!! That’s one to remember

wahoo!! congrats.

Deer bodies adjust to winter according to the hours of daylight, so likely to be less movement on a sunny day as they would get too hot.
Depending where you hunt, if lots of hunters, this could be balanced out by deer moving due to hunter movement-shooting.

My dog hates this time of year. We hear a lot of gun fire in the woods and it scares the. bejeezus out of her. Be careful out there and know what you're shooting at.
November 15th, 2023 at 8:35 AM ^
In the rural area of my Michigan childhood there were a few instances over the years where one hillbilly accidentally injured another hillbilly.
It made the woods seem extra scary in hunting season. But, you were allowed to take a day off from school on opening day, so there were a lot of K-12 hunters in the town around then.
November 15th, 2023 at 8:45 AM ^
It's one reason why I'm happy to live in town in A2. Our 13-yr old dog died in early September, but when he was with us, he absolutely hated loud noises. On July 4 the fireworks in the neighborhood were bad enough that for several years I resorted to driving out to a remote parking lot on North Campus and running the AC full blast just to block whatever fireworks noise was ambient out there. He would have been petrified with gunfire off in the distance.

I'm sorry about your dog, Don. I lost my 17-year-old cat (herself a skilled hunter) a couple of months ago. No fun.
November 15th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
Sorry to hear about your kitty.
We also lost our 15-year old cat in January, and our daughter is going to see off her aging and quite ill cat this weekend.
2023 is the worst year ever for pets in our family.

Thanks...and ugh, I hope 2024 is better for you guys.
November 15th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
I used to have(died) a white German Shepherd that would eat your face off if you entered my house without permission. Fireworks/firecrackers she would head straight for the bathtub. Just lay in it and tremble.
I used to tell my buddies that if you ever wanted to rob my house just bring firecrackers, no dog problem.

Our doberman's breeder was adamant about exposing pups to loud noises or opening umbrellas in front of them (essentially anything a dog may find startling). Turns out she was right. Hard to get the old dogs to ever become comfortable with that stuff.
November 15th, 2023 at 11:16 AM ^
Same as our guy—he was a 70-lb Lab-Shepherd mix who would sound absolutely ferocious if somebody knocked at our door, but make a loud noise of any sort and he'd run and hide. Lightning and fireworks were definitely tremble triggers.
November 15th, 2023 at 1:43 PM ^
Interesting. My shepherd also took refuge in the tub during storms or fireworks. Or she would hide behind the furnace in the basement. Great instincts as these are the places we're told to whole up if there's a tornado.

I am not a hunter, but when in the field, I find myself in area where there are hunters quite a bit. If you see someone wearing a placard which reads, "NOT A DEER", that might be me.
November 15th, 2023 at 8:36 AM ^
Hmmm that’s exactly what a deer would say… sounds sus

Sounds like you're stealing signs? I'll put that in my binder.

This one's a bit of a provocation. Could have said hunting season. Everyone in my family used to hunt at one time. But parents of dead school children and victims of mass murders would find it hard to place the words 'happy' and 'gun' in the same sentence. Hope you bag your limit. Hope that your wife doesn't have to dress 'em if it's really not her thing.
November 15th, 2023 at 8:08 AM ^
From what I understand, there are different portions of hunting season, with today being the first day of gun season. Frankly I didn’t find it to be a provocation at all. I am not a gun person (currently getting ready to freeze my ass off on a golf course instead) but they are inanimate objects.

Sport utilities hunt stray humans year 'round. Occasionally with someone onboard. Depends on the narrative like most things these days.
November 15th, 2023 at 8:40 AM ^
Part of me wants you to explain this more. And the other part does not. Let the fates decide!
November 15th, 2023 at 8:47 AM ^
News headlines for quite sometime have said sports utility kills 4 or some such instead of the focus on the drivers actions. I am kind of big on personal responsibility and not leaving outcomes to...fate.
November 15th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
There's a tendency easily avoidable colissions caused by drunk or distracted drivers as "accidents" as if they were not the result of a decision with a forseeable outcome.
November 15th, 2023 at 8:57 AM ^
Correct. From mlive:
Bow-hunting season occurs in two halves, Oct. 1 to Nov. 14 and Dec. 1 to Jan. 1. In the first half, or early-segment, hunters have – as of Nov. 15 – harvested 76,882 deer, of which 55,651 were antlered and 21,232 were antlerless.
Gun season in Michigan runs from November 15-30, hence the post.
November 15th, 2023 at 9:32 AM ^
FWIW, you can still hunt with a bow during rifle season, you just have to abide by 'rifle' rules. the differences being basically wear orange and shoot bucks with at least 3 pts on one side.
November 15th, 2023 at 8:29 AM ^
You're really reaching on this one, man.
November 15th, 2023 at 9:13 AM ^
Its already been said, but hunting season is pretty much all year depending on what and how you are hunting. Today is the actual first day for rifle season, so what he said is correct.

I think we'd all be better off if we stopped taking responsibility for other people's experiences, and just worried about our own. I don't hunt. I'm not a gun guy. But hunting is literally the way we got food ancestrally, it keeps us from running into deer on the road, and it's responsible gun usage. C'mon, bro.
If someone read the thread and is bothered, they can own that, but honestly we have to stop walking around playing police for other people's thoughts. It's not insensitive - I don't have responsibility for your feelings. I can't make you happy. I can't make you sad. If I could fix other peoples feelings, I'd just walk around all day making everyone happy - but that's not how it works. I can only do me, and try to show up in my authenticity. If you are hurt or upset, I can listen, and hear you, and try to understand if you tell me how you are experiencing something, but could we stop blaming other people for our experience? It's an illusion. You are the only one who can change how you feel about something, and waiting for someone else to do it for you surrenders your power and your autonomy.

I love this blog but it is absolutely on brand for someone here to make a comment like that and someone else to say he thinks there might be different hunting seasons for firearms and then posts a newspaper article link to prove it.
November 15th, 2023 at 10:00 AM ^
I just don't know that much about hunting. I do know that there are different seasons for different kinds of hunting and that the OP's gun specific thread was not an effort to upset people who think guns are walking down the street looking for their next victim.
November 15th, 2023 at 10:46 AM ^
Vastly more kids are killed by cars than guns. A should we not mention cars?
November 15th, 2023 at 10:47 AM ^
You are right. Gun free zones are not safe spaces.
November 15th, 2023 at 10:56 AM ^
Not sure it’s a provocation, but I do know it’s Offtopic per this website’s rules (see my other post where I’m getting negged into oblivion for following the rules).
