Bacon: Harbaugh should have an extension within the next month that makes him the highest paid coach in [B1G]
October 9th, 2023 at 2:42 PM ^
Hopefully he is willing to sign it.
Go Bllue

This is gonna make the NCAA D-I "Council" go insane. They've had a Harbaugh Hard-on for 9 years running. They're gonna announce a 2 year suspension for Harbs this week. One year per cheeseburger.

I made the statement on the second page and I want to make it here. Michigan attempting to make Jim the highest paid coach in college football is important. Often, Jim has communicated wanting to be wanted by his employer as loyalty is important to him. Loyalty must be shown not just communicated and he showed it to us when he was willing to take a pay cut after a sub-par season that frankly was out his hands.
Jim is rich and there may be some who argue that he doesn't need the money and a prestigious university shouldn't be paying twelve million dollars plus for a football coach. However, the point is not the money but to show Coach Harbaugh that is he is more important to us than Saban is to Alabama or even Mel Tucker to MSU. There is always the possibility that Jim donates the money back to the school or asks for less but let him be the one to make that choice. Michigan should be demonstrating absolute loyalty to him in the form of a truly generous offer.
Coach Harbaugh has made these last three years extremely enjoyable for us as fans and it would be wonderful if we could lock him up for the next 10 plus years and see him retire as Michigan's all time winningest coach. Pay the man! He should not be the highest paid coach in the Big 10 but all of college football.
October 9th, 2023 at 6:18 PM ^
We are the two-time defending champs of the richest conference in the country. Whether or not Harbaugh needs the money, there almost literally could not be a better return on investment on whatever salary we give him.
October 9th, 2023 at 7:15 PM ^
Yes Michigan does need to show a commitment to JH. But that is also a two way street. He needs to also show a commitment to UM and never interview with another NFL team. He needs to completely shut that down. He signs a new contract he also tells the NFL don’t contact me I’m here to stay
October 10th, 2023 at 7:38 AM ^
There is more than loyalty at stake here, but probably some fences to be mended between Warde and JH. I imagine Couch Harbaugh would like some token that the Administration is going to do a better job of backing him than the shameful lack of support he got over a couple of cheeseburgers. This means a contract, which has proven sticky with Warde in the loop, must do a better job of outlining what kind of support JH can expect from the university in return for his denouncing any interest in returning to the NFL. In the meantime, why on earth would Harbaugh voluntarily give up the largest bargaining chip on his side of the table. This is a point of pride with JH, not loyalty.
October 10th, 2023 at 10:20 AM ^
I would also say there are other ways to show loyalty than direct compensation. Increase the assistants pool. Invest in infrastructure, etc. It doesn't all have to go to Jim.
October 10th, 2023 at 11:04 AM ^
I keep was thinking about that too. It would be great for the team and for Harbaugh to be able to keep this staff together for as long as possible. It's obvious that he loves the team and his staff. Keeping them together will make his life easier and more enjoyable.
October 21st, 2023 at 4:10 PM ^
I know how much championships mean to many people. But to me "The Team, The Team, Team" and "Let's have a really good time!" embody what Michigan is about. Denard Robinson's absolute magic is just as wonderful as what U of M students do with their various sciences (I know it might sound ridiculous to refer to the arts as "sciences", but that truly what I feel they are). Denard Robinson working the magic with that wicked smile of his, the U of M health system doing what they do through science, and all the STEM and art together make Michigan what it is. Paying Coach Harbaugh that amount may seem ridiculous to some, but if it convinces him to stay and fight the stupid rules and find workarounds to make these kids feel special works then it's totally worth it. Michigan's not perfect but it's awesome in what it tries to do with character and that's why I love it and you guys.
Class (in every sense of the word) For The Win!
October 9th, 2023 at 2:42 PM ^
There are a lot of smart people at Michigan. Harbaugh will be worth every penny - and, my guess - as part of his negotiation / new contract - will be "very attractive" funding for the coaching staff / assistants / etc.
Go Blue!
October 10th, 2023 at 1:53 AM ^
You mean he won’t keep his assistant coaches bonus money ala Mel?
October 10th, 2023 at 6:14 AM ^
Think Mel just knew what was coming so he was tucking away a few pennies for a rainy day
October 9th, 2023 at 2:42 PM ^
If this is true, as I trust it is from JUB, then FUCK YES.
Stay home, Jimmy. Let the dynasty continue
October 9th, 2023 at 4:14 PM ^
I've learned that not everything from JUB is solid. I'm not questioning this report though. I hope this is true!
October 9th, 2023 at 7:14 PM ^
I will not believe it until the Oracle of Michigan football, the AD Whisperer, GOJ, makes another cryptic ass post.
October 9th, 2023 at 10:25 PM ^
JUB, like any insider, is only as good as his source. They can only report what they hear from the people they know that are connected to the situation. I take every insider report with a grain of salt, as you never know where the information is really coming from.
I knew a guy who would feed me inside info he got from a guy who was the janitor at the Lions practice facility a few years back. Just stuff he’d overhear while he was cleaning up.
October 9th, 2023 at 2:43 PM ^
Pretty clever of them to wait for phone sex Mel to be fired.... that lowers the bar a rung.
October 9th, 2023 at 2:44 PM ^
Hopefully with a one beeellion dollar buy-out clause.
October 9th, 2023 at 2:44 PM ^
Why did this take so long? And still another month? What, in case we lose to Indiana? Recruiting seems to be completely shut down
October 9th, 2023 at 2:47 PM ^
Maybe they should hire you to manage schedules and time frames within the AD since you're so tapped into what should happen and when.
October 9th, 2023 at 2:51 PM ^
This seems months and years in the making. What is the "tip" that let info out a month in advance
October 9th, 2023 at 10:27 PM ^
Idk how you figure it’s “years” in the making. He signed an extension through 2026 in February 2022. Which is why there’s been no real rush to get another one done. They’re not on some crazy deadline and his contract isn’t set to expire.
October 9th, 2023 at 2:59 PM ^
What did you have for breakfast this morning? Why did you make that choice today? It seems there are better things you could have had for breakfast.
October 9th, 2023 at 3:17 PM ^
I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast!!!
October 9th, 2023 at 3:31 PM ^
Ha! You said you eat shit!
October 9th, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
Whatever the choice (most likely something with low fiber), it's apparently a frequent one.
October 9th, 2023 at 3:39 PM ^
Enjoy the season and quit looking so hard for things to whine about. They're kicking ass left and right on the field and developing recruits at a high level. 2008-2014 should make you appreciate this more.
October 9th, 2023 at 5:26 PM ^
I mean, with our schedule we don’t have much to talk about until Nov. 11. I’ll enjoy that 100%
October 9th, 2023 at 3:50 PM ^
Our class is more or less wrapped up - what recruiting activity do you expect to be seeing mid-season?
October 9th, 2023 at 4:29 PM ^
We've been after guys we've missed and lost commits in 24. 25 is super light as well
October 9th, 2023 at 5:12 PM ^
You should definitely quit posting in defiance. I will 100% support you in this endeavor. Draw a line in the sand.
October 9th, 2023 at 5:55 PM ^
My line is I love this team. Work has been shitty recently. I have a particular irritation at poor leadership. I think Jim excels at bring his own person and being a leader.
I don't know why the university isn't rewarding him and a very public shaming in his salary cut. That's all.
Win it all this year and then I'll take a nap.
October 9th, 2023 at 4:42 PM ^
Recruiting is shut down because they have a nearly full class
October 9th, 2023 at 2:44 PM ^
Cue the MGoidiot administrative experts that want "Warde" fired for.....?
October 9th, 2023 at 2:52 PM ^
None of us outsiders know enough to know whether Warde is good at his job, but he absolutely has an image problem. There are plenty of instances — Mel Pearson report, Ono’s strange tweet announcing Harbaugh was staying, etc — that were very bad looks for him
October 9th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
Yep.
Some people in the Athletic Department have shown whom they're willing to stand by and what for. It's not only permissible but necessary to know that Warde Manuel stands beside Jim Harbaugh as Jim Harbaugh stands besides his players and staff. If Harbaugh is going to stay he needs to know he has an AD who will stand by him and stand up for him in staring down bad officials, bad rules, and bad conduct. Hold each other accountable, but hold the line when people are unjustly attacking and ruining what makes college football right and great.
October 9th, 2023 at 3:40 PM ^
Is "Emanuel Warde" the evil doppelganger of Warde Manuel?
October 9th, 2023 at 4:09 PM ^
Imagine if you will, a place deep in space, a dimension unlike and yet so like our own...
Seriously, though. Thanks for catching that.
October 9th, 2023 at 11:51 PM ^
No idea but it sounds like it could be an intriguing yet problematic crossover of the famous French softcore porn movie series with the Women In Prison genre
October 9th, 2023 at 3:32 PM ^
Name a Michigan AD (not counting interims) in the last 30 years that was truly "good" at the job.
October 9th, 2023 at 3:38 PM ^
Based on the fact that you are 100% spot on here, I think we should hire only interim AD's from here on out. Can we do that please?
October 9th, 2023 at 3:44 PM ^
Bill Martin would have had a great legacy as AD if he'd never had to hire a football coach. He got a lot done on facilities and hired Beilein and several other good coaches. But the football transition ... oof.
October 9th, 2023 at 4:03 PM ^
Unfortunately for Wittenberg alum Bill Martin hiring a football coach is kind of a big deal at Michigan and tends to be remembered. Agreed the rest of his tenure was above average, but he will never live down the discombobulated coaching search that every Michigan AD simply HAS to be prepared for.
October 9th, 2023 at 4:53 PM ^
A broken clock is right twice a day. It shouldn't have required too many brain cells to offer Harbaugh a big contract to stay. Warde can be awful at his job and still be able to get this right.
October 9th, 2023 at 7:09 PM ^
The corollary of your post is 'cue the idiots that feel the need to call others an idiot'...
Most people (vastly most) that want him gone, want him gone because he doesn't stand up for anyone and just lets M get run over in public. He can clearly run a complex, vast, publicly available array of mini-businesses (teams) with a huge amount of physical facilities and glaring media attention worth ~$200M/yr. But when was the last time he publicly stood up for his coaches for any reason? He was loud and public when cutting Harbaugh's salary in 2020. But he couldn't be bothered to renew/extend/improve that contract a year later, let alone say anything publicly about it. Pres Ono had to bail him out and do his job for him!
October 9th, 2023 at 2:47 PM ^
If he signs a big extension with an expensive buyout, it would likely end his chances of going back to the NFL, which is why I don’t think he’s going to sign anything until he takes one more look at making the jump after the season ends. That’s why the deal didn’t get done in the off season. It seems like a strange time to leak this. I hope the university isn’t risking causing turmoil to try to force his hand.
October 9th, 2023 at 2:53 PM ^
You gettin any returns on your thoughts lately? Investments?
October 9th, 2023 at 3:03 PM ^
Yeah I don't know about that one: https://www.mlive.com/wolverines/2023/10/jim-harbaugh-wants-new-contract-at-michigan-been-a-3-12-year-thing.html
October 9th, 2023 at 3:28 PM ^
He didn’t say he wants to finish his coaching career at Michigan. He didn’t say he’s not interested in the NFL. He said only that he was “open” to a new contract, which is about as noncommittal as it gets. After the last two years, he could’ve had a new contract in the off season, if that’s what he wanted. It wasn’t. Why should he voluntarily foreclose his options now? Maybe he’s had a change of heart, but I’ll believe it when he actually signs. Ask yourself why the university would bring this up in the middle of the season.
