OT - Bob Huggins resigns as WVU MBB head coach
Not so surprising following his DUI arrest on Friday. This is being called a retirement.
His stints at Cincy and WVU both ran 16 years and both ended following DUIs.
Hope the man can get the help he needs.
He just brought in a bunch of transfers - curious what happens there.
Supposedly, a huge host of players, most of who transferred in this past season or for the upcoming one, are expected to enter the portal. Any coaching change activates a 30-day transfer window.
Anyone we can use?
Jesse Edwards (C), RaeQuan Battle (wing), and maybe Kerr Kriisa (PG/SG), but I doubt Michigan has the bag game to entice them.
Praying he gets some help. Dude definitely had some issues in his life.
Hey, if Michigan’s Midland county sheriff can get a DUI while super drunk and not resign, it really shows that college hoops coaches are held to a higher ethical standard than LE in this country. Murica!
Most everyone is held to a higher ethical standard than LE in this country.
Also the sheriff of St. Joseph county just this spring, had a bac of .252 and crashed into another car causing them to rollover, thankfully the couple inside was uninjured. He was driving a county car with a couple of firearms inside too. Got sentenced to just a year of probation plus fines, and kept his job.
With that kind of corruption, you’d think we’re talking about organized crime syndicates!
C'mon, this ain't no San Jose Police Union!
Corruption or union or, wait…
Guy's had Hellhounds on his trail for a while. I hope he can shake them.
That's rough.
Based on his age, appearance, and lifestyle (EtOH consumption, probably long hours for many years with some stress), it seems easy to conclude that he is (as of a few days ago, anyway) a high-functioning alcoholic and somewhat lucky to be alive. How many years would a medical actuary have given him at 60?
Regarding the odds of him "getting help" and "turning it around," I wish him the best but consider both unlikely. Like many of you, probably, I'm old enough to have seen some extended family members and acquaintances drink themselves to death. Failures have greatly outnumbered successes.
It will be interesting to see if removing a major source of stress like his occupation helps him turn things around. He certainly doesn't need to work ever again. Assuming he can quit drinking, he's probably got another 10-15 years left.
He might be more stressed trying to figure out what to do with his time.
He needs to get help before he really hurts someone
Giving an alcoholic with significant financial resources a whole bunch more spare time doesn't seem like a recipe for success.
Maybe he could use some of that free time in treatment? Crazy idea, I know.
I can’t think of a more appropriate time to use the phrase quit drinking and go to bed.
Hard to see this, hope he gets some help. Always liked Huggins as a coach, but glad he's stepping down to focus on what's clearly more important.
Dude's likely been what you call a 'lush' for most of his adult life. Probably just got lucky to not get caught more. Who knows how many officers gave him 'courtesy' due to him being a prominent basketball coach at the big local college over the years.
Chances of him ever changing at this point are probably close to zero.
I didn't think the West Virginia media would turn on him. I doubt this is the last we see of him.
Huggins has an inserted defibrillator (like Bo had in his final months) that was activated during a game in February of 2017 after he became lightheaded on the sideline.
He experienced a major heart attack in 2002 and only survived due to being close to a hospital with a well recognized cardiac care program.
His departure from coaching is long overdue and is necessary for a million different reasons.
In the medical and psychiatric worlds alcoholism is thought to be a disease. Coach Huggins is lucky to still be alive. Hopefully he can rehabilitate himself and live out the remainder of his life more successfully and identify more important priorities.
I don’t get it when people keep racking up DUIs. It’s really not that hard to just…not drive when you’ve been drinking.
As a rich basketball coach, he's got the money to hire a car service. Or Uber, at least.
When Billy Gillespie was at Kentucky , they ended up giving him his own chauffeur because he was such an alcoholic.
