Michigan @ Vanderbilt 2nd round NIT
With Vanderbilt beating Yale in the first round. Michigan will now face Jerry Stackhouse and Vandy this weekend in Nashville. It will be nice to see my Wolverines come to Nashville. I will for sure be at the game. Go Blue!
Game to be played either Saturday or Sunday.

Go Dores!
March 14th, 2023 at 11:08 PM ^
Oh yeah? Well don't let the Dores hit you on the way out, Vlad.
And quit shooting down our drones dammit!
March 14th, 2023 at 11:28 PM ^
Shooting down? You mean, dumping fuel on and physically running into drones with an outdated "fighter jet"? That was embarrassing, Vlad, even by communist standards.
But hey, that badass in Belarus has still got your back...and so does the fat kid that doesn't poop in North Korea...and the run-over-kids-with-tanks-party in China is "crushing" it too...COMMIE PRIDE!

User name checks out.
It’s ‘Vandy’, not ‘Vladdy’, HP. Also, don’t forget about Vladdy’s bootlicking toady running the Chechen ‘Republic’.
Welcome to 1984… Russia ain’t been commie for a while, my dude!
Has it even been confirmed they intentionally dumped fuel on it? For all we know, it was a cold war plane with a fuel leak that got too close.
March 15th, 2023 at 11:34 AM ^
Correction the fuel jumped out of the plane and committed suicide.

I’m curious why a Vandy fan would spend so much time here in a UofM Blog?
March 15th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
Is there a one school limit to fandom?
March 15th, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
I am curious why you're a fan of this particular second school.
Proximity? You live in the area?
You got a PhD in linguistics from Michigan and an MD from Vanderbilt?
It's a multi-transportational thing, being fond of UM's solar car and Vandy's boats?
You like the pairing of U & V, University of Michigan and Vanderbilt?
March 15th, 2023 at 12:36 PM ^
Vanderbilt is my alma mater. I grew up in Michigan.
Vlad-erbilt Commie-dores?
Checks out.
Aha! Nice campus.
I dated a Commodore. (She was from Tulsa.)
March 15th, 2023 at 11:52 AM ^
Of course not but when you spend this much time on a Blog dedicated to Michigan Sports it would seem that school would be your top choice. I understand this is a cool blog with interesting characters.
Just curious is all. I know these are treacherous times and you may not want to divulge too much information.
March 15th, 2023 at 12:36 PM ^
There isn't a comparable blog dedicated to Vanderbilt sports. And Michigan teams are better across the board anyway.
Coat and ties to the game right?
If 36-24-36 is Vanderbilt's shooting splits in our next game, they will indeed be building a brick house.
Also - to bring this full circle, does anyone else remember that Brick House was the theme music for former Piston Jerry Stackhouse, who is now Vandy's coach??
I agree the Doors are a great band, but what does this have to do with basketball
May our Wolverines

My uncle saw The Doors play at the Union when he was a student at Michigan. Just trying to bring this full circle.

October 1967? Legendary disaster (but it was in the IM building not the Union):

Have to admit I never knew or bothered to look up why they are the Vanderbilt Commodores. Maybe i'm the only one but if you're in the dark like I was, it's apparently because it was Corneilus Vanderbilt's nickname - "The Commodore" - which makes more sense than me trying to figure out why the Navy was involved.
If Wikipedia can be believed, he got the nickname when he ran the Staten Island Ferry, as it was given to steamboat entrepreneurs.
Yes, Michigan is playing a school named after a robber baron.
Stanford's another similarly sourced school.
Others?

Duke is, I think, the only other D-I school named for somebody who would be generally considered a "Robber Baron."
Carnegie-Mellon is D-III and covers 2 different Robber Barons.
Rockefeller University
Trump University
Okay, I was only considering Universities that offered 4-year undergraduate degrees.
Of course!
C-M may be D-III but it's in the big leagues of theater schools.
(Which are Michigan, Northwestern, NYU, Yale Drama, Carnegie-Mellon, and CCM, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.)

Rumor is that you are dying.

We lost at Vandy in 2003. My brother and I were at the game, so.... revenge.
March 14th, 2023 at 11:26 PM ^
Let’s go Blue. And Nashville hot chicken. And to the Patterson House for drinks.
Yazoo Brewing, too. Top tier

Hoping the schedule works out for me to go as well!
Last year, went to the baseball game @ Vandy that was played while an NIT game was played next door. Basketball fans came out of the game to watch the final terrible inning for Blue baseball.

If Jett stays sidelined, I am confident that we win this game. I am not trashing the young man - he has potential galore and I hope he realizes that potential in the NBA, - but the team functions differently without him. Bufkin, in particular, is significantly more dominant. We also tend to move the ball better and generally just look better (although far from great) in terms of team defense.
March 15th, 2023 at 12:11 AM ^
Dug also looks to score more and it seems that helps his overall game. His shot looks pretty good at times and I think the uptick in shots with Jett not out there helps his rhythm and confidence and makes for him a better scorer.
Might be a full of shit theory but I like the thought.
One man's "full of shit" is another man's "insightful." Which is my way of saying I agree with you.
And may I use this opportunity to applaud Joey Baker. I've slammed the guy a couple of times during this season, but jeez - 21 points, and 5/7 from the three? Well done, and where has this been all season?
Where is it been all season? Well, he’s certainly got more of an opportunity with Jett out, but also Toledo‘s defense sucks—hard. All Baker had to do was hit open threes and a couple of drives to the basket; and fortunately he was able to do that. Against Big Ten teams, you’re not getting quite so many open looks.
He was saving it for the Rockets.
Re: Joey
He was not playing 300-350th ranked defenses with guys 6'7 and below.
Well, he's only taken seven or more 3s in three previous games, all games in which Jett was out. So he hasn't had the opportunity very often.
But he has had some great games off the bench: he was 4/5 from three with 14 points against Pitt and 3/4 with 14 points at Northwestern. Those were both big wins against NCAA tournament teams so not weak competition.
But last night he got the opportunity and the competition was weak (at least defensively). That's what allowed him to make those drives. He wouldn't be doing that against Big ten teams much.
But he did shoot threes well against top level competition all season. He was 38% against top 100 teams on the year. Pretty good.
That the team shot "lights-out" yet only squeaked this game out, at home no less, says there is much more wrong with this team than Jett.
It was nice to see Hunter give, at least, some tacit defensive effort on a couple of occasions. It did not matter-Toledo scored at will when they targeted him. Hunter seems to inspire the opposition's offense. Stats often only tell the story the observer wishes to push. So, I will point out that Tarris was +5 in 5 minutes-and that +5 closed a Michigan deficit from 7 to 2...and guess who wasn't on the floor during that time. It is interesting how so few note the realities here.
It was a competitive first half but Michigan had a comfortable lead for almost the entire second half. The game was not particularly close.

With the emergence of Dug and Kobe mid season, Jett's role on this team should be as a bench microwave guy. Baker is much better at filling the 3 and D wing role that this team needs when Dug, Kobe, and Hunter are on the floor

Good matchup. If we win here, maybe off the Clemson. I think this team can learn from a tough road environment for next year.

Yale was higher ranked on kenpom.. their home court advantage seems very low... if I were a betting person
but when yale got the lead/spread down to 3-4 points toward the end, boy oh boy did vandy get a home whistle on a handful of really critical calls. i didn't care who won, but i felt bad for the bulldogs who were playing their hearts out in an 8-on-5 game at crunch time.
and i'll also say i wasn't overly impressed with vandy, not one bit. of course we've laid a bunch of eggs on our own this year, but vandy looked 'meh' for lots of that game.
This is the NIT. There are a bunch of 'Meh' teams. If they werent, they would be dancin.
Yup, this is the top of the bottom, the bottom of the top, the cream of the crap. But winning a tournament is still winning a tournament.
