Defensive Front 7 at the Combine. Mike Morris finished #1 DE! [results and shameless CFBrisk plug also enclosed]
They're differentiating EDGE from DE as well as from LB.
Mike Morris had the best overall DE rating.
40-Yard Dash 4.95s
10-Yard Split 1.72s
Vertical Jump 28.5’’
Broad Jump 9’ 2’’
NFL.com projects him to be a plus starter in 3+ years.
While I have your attention, go to collegefootballrisk.com and put in a move for Michigan!
Mike Muthafuckin' Morris!
I recommend EVERYONE take an order, as it results in the most efficient allocation of our power. HOWEVER, if you insist on being a Rouge I recommend
PEURTO RICO
HATTIESBURG
LAFEYETTE
BOCA
The Caribbean is nice this time of year. I sure OSU won't mind!
Speaking of Puerto Rico, I noticed Curbelo not playing last night. Looked it up at he's playing at St Johns? Wish we snagged him. He's a dynamic player and underrated.
And Mazi, as expected, didn't test.
Expected but still a bummer. I think he puts himself firmly in the first if he's able to test, and selfishly I want to know his official numbers.
Since he was the "#1 FREAK" coming into the season, I was hoping for some off the charts numbers.
A 4.95, while not surprising, isn't going to help his cause. Not when the NWU kid is running a 4.5.
JaMarcus Russell and Darius Heyward-Bey had crazy measurables, how'd that work out for them?
Also, some guy named Tom Brady would like to discuss measurables and combine perceptions with you and his 7 Super Bowl rings.
How is it that I'm the first and only one to upvote this???
You're off to a great start. Gather some more data and you might have something post-worthy.
Would a single result determine where Morris fell in the draft?
Aside, I think referring to someone in college as a "kid" is a little creepy.
I'm 57. I'm a MAN! I'll refer to everyone of you little whippersnappers as a kid if I want to, and you can find a way to deal with it.
Agreed. If they are the same age as my own kids, I call them all kids.
I'm 30. Sometimes I feel like I just graduated college even though it was 7 years ago. Then I go lead the weekly Bible Study at the college ministry I help out with, and I think to myself, "nope, those are kids".
You're right that they're not technically kids, but the college life is this weird transition time that encourages certain kinds of immaturity while promoting others. In many ways, they're both kids and adults at the same time.
They do call them, “college kids” though.
Attack the Caribbean and destroy their multiplier!!!
That 40 time makes sense, he wasn't the fastest. He seems like he'll be at worst a 3rd round pick.
This is a slightly misleading thread, since most of the weight of his grade is based on production and not athleticism. His production grade of 75 is 2nd among DEs but his athleticism grade is 9th at 58 - it’s only the overall grade of 76 that places him first among combine DEs.
Personally, I think the tape speaks well to his athleticism since he was our only effective EDGE while playing at 6’6 and nearly 300lbs. That said his combine drills were pretty meh in the 40, vertical, and broad jump. He’d fit well on the Steelers, Ravens, or the Packers as a 3-4 DE.
I may get negged for this, but I actually watched the combine last night with the DE. Compared to all the other DE in his group, he was last. He had the slowest 40 time in his group. He constantly slipped and fell on every agility drill.
Before everyone piles on me, Morris is a prime example of what Dan Campbell is referring to. Campbell has come out and specifically stated that he cares far more about game tape than "underware exercises". Morris's game tape speak for itself, but honestly he did not do well at the combine drills.
They even noted that he is more of Anchor DE than a speed DE and most of these drills favor the speed and agility...
He will be fine. I would fully expect that his Pro Day here at Michigan will go much better. It was obvious watching him during the combine that he was not happy with his performance.
I don't think of Morris as an edge rusher. I think of him as a guy that stacks and sheds and can get to your QB if he gets some help from coverage, or you get unsound somehow, be it scheme of technique, maybe he catches your guy thinking move and Morris gets up into him and bullies him instead.
Barring injury, I think he gets some years in the NFL.
I'd be thrilled to get him in the fourth round. He's a solid pick in the third ... my opinion.
This is exactly what they were talking about last night. He will make a great Anchor DE. Stack blocks and shed. Cog up running lanes. Rush lane controls.
He will have a very good NFL career, but the draft and combine are events that highlight impact plays (sacks, INT, explosiveness). It does not highlight effort, strength, leverage, and techniques. Morris excels in the latter categories and will have a productive NFL career.
Huh. There were several DEs (not Edges) who put up way better numbers than that in all categories.
Sure would have looked good in a Michigan uniform this year.
3rd rounder at BEST
Impressive that he did that considering he prepped with a MSU guy😂
nfl dot com disagrees with your assessment.
Mike was listed in the Losers section of the Winners and Losers from Day 1. His testing numbers are near the bottom of all DL and LBs.
Granted, as MCDC says, you grade off tape. He could still be a solid pro. But your title doesn't say that.
Mike had a bad day at the combine.
Morris was slipping everywhere today so I think his times could be even better at his pro day. Once again NFL field prove to be awful
Doesn't explain other DL posting better times than Morris and they played in the same condition as him. Morris was never going to test out as an elite athlete but he's a very good EDGE player.
He will really need to work on the 40 time for a pro day here. 4.9 is now slow for an edge rusher. Most teams will start looking at him as an anchor not a rusher. He can still be a very good nfl de and may improve. We all know nobody is running a 40 at dline, but it shows explosiveness and that first step burst which he didn't have often. Many of his sacks were bull rush or coverage.
It didn't help he was injured the last couple weeks of the season and cfp game so he may be able to improve that time but only has till March 18th till the Michigan pro day.
Harrison runs 85 here.
I hope during that run he reconsidered his choice of OSU over Michigan.
A 1.72 split for an end is just brutal…lots of NFL teams will write him off as anything but an anchor. Catastrophically bad day for Morris that probably cost him $5M+ over the life of his first contract. A real fucking bummer - but also explains why a guy who had such excellent technique wasn’t that great as a rusher.
Mazi Smith, OTOH, doing 34 reps with 34” arms…now that’s a fucking day at the office.
That tracks with what we know about him - he isn't the fastest guy in the world, but he's explosive over short distances, which is arguably more important for a big DE.
No he’s not explosive over short distances. 1.72 is not good for an NFL pass rusher. Top guys are under 1.6.
I saw a bit of the DL combine yesterday and it appeared that many of them were slipping and falling down with regularity. With all the professional coaching these guys are getting there should be someone paying attention to footwear.
There were others that were slipping as well. But I am pretty sure Morris slipped on literally every field drill. There was not a single drill he looked good at.
It was very odd to watch him, given what we witnessed all season long. I would have to believe that he was no where near 100% healthy yesterday. I fully expect him to come back on March 18th and have better numbers
