Heisman Odds for 2023: Joe Milton Ahead of JJ and Blake

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on January 11th, 2023 at 11:56 AM

Several sites are posting Heisman odds for 2023. Here's the one from Fansided.

Reigning champ Caleb Williams of USC is obviously the favorite but it gets a little silly when you start looking down the list. JJ McCarthy and Blake Corum are tied for the 13th-best odds, below Joe Milton, who is ninth. Donovan Edwards shows up nowhere. JJ and Blake are also behind the new quarterbacks from Penn State and Ohio State.

The preseason favorite almost never wins the Heisman (the only time it's happened in our generation was Marcus Mariota in 2014), so it won't be Williams again. Corum's touches will likely be reduced this season because of Edwards - and he is coming off an injury - but this still seems like a lack of respect that will hopefully fuel him.

he's not a better player but is in an offense where he will be in position to put up stats in the Tennessee offense versus the run-first offense for JJ and Blake and the Don sharing caries.

Put your money on JJ.  He now has a wealth of experience to draw from. Full season as a BIG starter. Led team to victory over OSU, won the BIG championship and started a playoff game. I expect a significant jump for him in his 2nd year as a starter.

Agreed. I made a joke earlier about Deion Sanders son winning it next it year and that was based on some stupid ESPN or whatever ''early predictions" article I read a few weeks ago. CU would have to go 10-2 at best - and that is just not happening. Icing on the cake was that the author of the article actually was a Heisman voting member. That explains everything you need to know about the Heisman award these days.

The Heisman is basically the "QB or best offensive player at Alabama" award at this point.  So whatever.  Good luck to everyone involved and hope they get orange slices at the end of the year.

I don't really have an issue with this. It's a QB award and Tennessee's offense is designed to make their QB's life easy and put up big stats

If JJ can put together drives like he did vs. TCU next year(offensive philosophy allowing) I don't see how he is only 13th on the list.  He has all the tools to take over games on the ground and through the air if he can just build on what he started to do late in the season

A QB on a run dominate team will never win the Heisman. He’d have to have ridiculous numbers against the best of teams which won’t happen.  How many pick sixes did Milton throw against Clemson?

A big whatever.  Football is a team sport.  If a Heisman comes, then that is terrific for the player and his teammates and the fans but not the focus eight months before the season starts.  No one thought Desmond would win the Heisman and no one thought Charles would win it this far before the season started.

Probably has to do with the fact that Milton will run a system that maximizes a QB’s arm strength and use of the deep ball, as well as doing a good job of scheming receivers open against inferior teams. Also, it’s a sexy pick for the sports writers after his one good game against Clemson.

Assuming he stays the starter, he will likely put up some big numbers, but can he get out of his own way and be the leader that Hooker was? Maybe…Can he translate stats into wins??
Harbaugh clearly saw something in him early on, maturity just didn’t seem to be there.

Also, will Tennessee be in the playoff conversation in week 11-13? We will see.

So who would you put money on then OP as UM's offense will be shared by JJ Corum and Edwards and a Harbaugh offense will never put up Heisman #s for a QB? What's the obvious pick that everyone is missing.

the disrespekt card is annoying.

Preseason odds mean nothing. Corum shouldn't lead right now, as you never know what he will come back as after injury. JJ collapsed under pressure vs TCU and had a lot of missed throws this year, so I agree he shouldn't be high either. Milton had all the potential in the world when he was here, we just couldn't reign it in. Tennessee is a pass-friendly offense, and it was because of the passing they beat Clemson. Penn state is loaded with Talent so I'm fine with that. With the receivers OSU has, any QB can look amazing so I don't mind them either. Bo nix is never going to happen. He's just been a constant "what if" that hasn't happened

I thought Milton played great in his bowl game. Hooker beat him out fair and square though. I'm not seeing this.  Once defenses get a view, Milton will have to up his game (which could happen, and has since he left Michigan.)

Seeing relative development year to year is what makes CFB >> NFL for this fan.

Is this a surprise given the style of offense we run? Blake Corum would have been our first offensive Heisman finalist this year since….? Now that he is set to split touches even more with Edwards next year, both are less likely to win the award. As far as JJ, come on let’s be real. Harbaugh’s offense, even with a talent like JJ, is never going to put up the passing stats needed to win the Heisman. So yes, Joe Milton should have better odds. It’s no disrespect to any of our guys.

I know everyone says it’s a QB award but I’m surprised Harrison is that low. If I were to bet it would be on Harrison. Half of OSUs offense next year with a first year QB is going to be to just throw it in his direction.

Well, based on our most recent winner and finalists we seem to be much more likely to have a defensive player win it. I would be very happy to see a second D player hoist the trophy. If Aidan had his last year this season he maybe could have pulled it off. The last weeks of the season the heisman was basically a hot potato being tossed around and everyone dropping it. Even the final game for CW wasn’t anything special and was a loss. Based on all of that Corum unfortunately missed a really good opportunity at winning. He was easily the most consistent player in the country. No bad games, didn’t even get the opportunity to pad his stats in OOC because he was taken out so early.

Marvin Harrison belongs in the Top 5, not just Blake Corum.

I don't get how not just Milton, but also JJ is higher than both.

Milton's odds will go down when he starts firing passes at the ground with no pressure or running standing straight up into the line with no force on 4th and 1 like he did several times in our 2-4 season.  After almost single handedly being responsible for losses against MSU and Wisconsin,  I never wanted to see him take another snap at U-M.
