OT: Purdue names Ryan Walters as Football Head Coach
December 13th, 2022 at 10:38 AM ^
Mobile glitched…can we update title Purdue names Ryan Walters Illinois DC as Head coach. This should help us with couple late recruitments including Hill and Pierce.
December 13th, 2022 at 10:48 AM ^
I would think this would just about seal Hill up for the good guys.
December 13th, 2022 at 1:49 PM ^
Forgive me, I haven't really been following recruiting this season. who is Hill?
December 13th, 2022 at 2:11 PM ^
DB who is Michigan’s top target. Potential shut down game changer.

Jyaire Hill https://247sports.com/Player/Jyaire-Hill-46125461/
He is a guy who is underrated in my eyes. Earlier this year, he was a high 3* type with great size for CB (6' 1"). He had since shot up to now #168 on the composite rankings and I feel like he could have risen more had he more more accurately ranked earlier in the process. If we get him and pierce, suddenly, our class is ~ 15 overall…obviously not amazing but certainly not a calamity.

Unless Walters is able to swing Hill to Purdue. Never underestimate the lure of a shiny new hire who hasn't accumulated any dings as a HC yet. Marcus Freeman comes immediately to mind.
December 13th, 2022 at 10:55 AM ^
Would be one thing for fickell to take a Cincy recruit with him But another for hill to follow first time HC to purdue. Crazier things have happened, but I think with early signing day about a week away, that’s quite the leap of faith.
December 13th, 2022 at 10:58 AM ^
And as Freeman shows, those dings can come quite quickly
December 13th, 2022 at 11:05 AM ^
Unless Walters is able to swing Hill to Purdue
He won't. Not only has Hill been a Michigan lean since the last few games of the season, but one of the bigger allures of Illinois for Hill was that he'd be close to home. Purdue is not
December 13th, 2022 at 11:28 AM ^
The drive from Kankakee to West Lafayette is about 20 minutes longer than the drive from Kankakee to Urbana-Champaign. The close to home factor is about the same.
I would still guess this mostly bodes well for Michigan's chances though.
December 13th, 2022 at 11:33 AM ^
Illinois for Hill was that he'd be close to home. Purdue is not
Was that sarcasm?
Kankakee to Champaign: 78 Miles
Kankakee to West Lafayette: 91 Miles
December 13th, 2022 at 12:16 PM ^
But he crossed state lines!!!
December 13th, 2022 at 12:18 PM ^
It is a long 13 miles, like the tunnel in Shawshank. Or maybe the tunnel at Michigan Stadium.
December 13th, 2022 at 12:52 PM ^
Do they throw PB & J's at you when you cross the border though?
December 13th, 2022 at 12:34 PM ^
Not that it matters… The trip from his hometown to Champaign is direct and on an interstate highway. The drive to West Lafayette is probably on US highways and “nice” country roads.
Regardless, if you’re familiar or friends - a few extra minutes each probably won’t influence whether or not you see him play. And, both schools are good - though West Lafayette might be a more interesting campus.

Speaking of. Years ago, I had to frequently travel down to Indy from Chicago for work and I would just drive since it was faster than flying. I got pulled over one time going almost 100. The cop was cool about it, but the fine was crazy, so I tried to fight it. My lawyer said that its best that I don't go back into Indiana until it gets resolved because they might not be so nice if I get pulled over again. That wasn't an option since I was going there for work. I decided to just take some back rounds and highways. There were definitely some interesting towns on that route. Small town USA is no joke.
December 13th, 2022 at 2:31 PM ^
We go to Texas every year to see our daughter. To avoid Chicago I take I-65 south about 30 miles then zig zag west and south thru farm country and end up on I-57 near Champaign. Small Town USA for sure 👍

That tends to be true moreso at locations that have their own allure. Your Freeman example works because Notre Dame is already an attractive landing spot. You bring in a new coach, vibes are positive, energy is high, recruits follow. Purdue is still Purdue. So while they might see an uptick from their usual recruiting, I don’t think we’re looking at them being contenders for a bunch of 4* guys
December 13th, 2022 at 5:03 PM ^
Also dude isn’t committed to Illinois currently. It’s one thing if you have been in the fold for a while and such. He’s still up in the air.
December 13th, 2022 at 12:58 PM ^
It’s one thing to follow a coach to USC or ND but Purdue?
You better be like step brothers…I’m not too worried.
December 13th, 2022 at 1:53 PM ^
Walters wouldn't even help with dishes.
December 13th, 2022 at 2:07 PM ^
Excellent. Thanks for sharing!
December 13th, 2022 at 10:47 AM ^
Good. I don't think they were under serious consideration for Purdue, but I know Moore, Hart, and Minter are thrown out there for HC openings. Hoping to keep the staff largely together for another season or two.
December 13th, 2022 at 10:59 AM ^
Purdue was the last "big" school with an opening. With Minter, Clink, and Moore sharing CO duties they should be safe until they are considered for HC jobs.
December 13th, 2022 at 11:26 AM ^
I'm less worried about a Power 5 school coming and hiring those coaches, but a Group of 5 team taking one of them. Although we love our offense, and the subtle things that make it great, I just don't think that is going to come off as a flashy enough hire for a Power 5 school.
Now Minter is a different case, and could be picked up, but I again think he doesn't have the splashy credentials yet... until he wins this National Championship.
December 13th, 2022 at 12:12 PM ^
The salary will be hard to compete with for G5s. Moore turned down even an opportunity to interview at WMU for example. He stands to make $1.3 million with bonuses this year. Only top G5s can pay that much
December 13th, 2022 at 12:58 PM ^
Coordinators should be safe from G5 schools for the most part. Strictly from a financial aspect, they’ll be taking a paycut with the majority of schools in G5. Low-mid level P5 schools are the most likely to take one of our coordinators.
Position coaches are looking at a slight uptick in pay or the same pay at a G5 school, but have the opportunity to put their own name on a program so it’s more realistic. Mike Hart interviewed with WMU for example. He’s making $500k this year and that’s increasing to $550k the upcoming season, and WMU was paying Tim Lester $600k to be the head coach.

There is an opening now at Miss State.
December 13th, 2022 at 12:46 PM ^
waay to soon.
December 13th, 2022 at 3:41 PM ^
Wasn't meant to be a joke - was 100% serious. Miss State now needs a head coach very late into the cycle. They may very well try to poach us.
December 13th, 2022 at 11:38 AM ^
Well unfortunately there's now an opening at Miss State. And when I say unfortunate, I mean that its unfortunate because someone had to die for it to happen.
I don't know what they all plan on doing. Maybe promote internally if they liked the direction they were heading under Leach, but its an incredibly terrible position for them to be in.
December 13th, 2022 at 11:45 AM ^
I say this with a regretful tone, but the plain truth is, given where those schools are located, the base of their fan bases, and simply looking at the face pictures of the history of SEC permanent HC hires, I would say, a few of our key assistants appear to be permanently disqualified from consideration by SEC schools.

Yes. I just learned Starkville is the home of US Grant's Presidential Library, which still doesn't seem right.
December 13th, 2022 at 1:27 PM ^
Other than kicking the souths ass throughout the south early in the war, and I honestly can't remember if he made it anywhere close to Mississippi, what connection to Ulysses have to Mississippi?
Seems odd
December 13th, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
It definitely seems odd. Apparently it was done to serve as a gesture of reconciliation.
December 13th, 2022 at 1:53 PM ^
He was certainly there for the Battle of Vicksburg - his first major command.
For whatever reason, the largest collection of Grant's papers was held at the MSU library by the Grant Association. They received full designation as a "Presidential Library" in the early 2000's, I believe.
It is a very big deal for a university to have a presidential library - hence its inclusion in Starkville even if it seems inapposite due to Grant's success prosecuting the Civil War. The Ford Library at Michigan is a treasure, for example.

I was surprised at the amount of disdain some Purdue fans expressed in the embedded Twitter thread about this hire. Outside of Minter, he was the best DC in the B1G this year, and did a lot without the benefit of top-flight recruiting. They seem worried about preserving the program’s identity as a spread, QB-friendly program. That seems a rather specious concern.
December 13th, 2022 at 7:07 PM ^
Watching the Penn State v Purdue game to start the season, I was less than impressed with Jeff Brohm's clock management when Purdue had the lead, late into the 4th quarter. It takes a lot to be out coached by Franklin. Purdue should be happy with the hire.

[DELETE] Someone's embedding skills are far superior.
Interesting move going with a defensive guy at HC. Good luck to him, but this feels like the end of the Spoilermaker regime.

That's a petty terrible title. For those not interested in clicking on the link....
Purdue names Ryan Walters (IL DC) as head coach.
Edit: I retract my comment since I see it was fixed

Somehow accidentally submitted, tried to correct with first post though! Alas!

I’ve done that before while hitting enter during tags. It’s a weird glitch and I’m terrified of it now every time I post one frame at a time.

I honestly thought this was going to be about Seth's UFR troll yesterday lol.
