OT: Possible final update on Mike Leach - 247 Steve Robertson

I wish I had better news, but I’m told UMMC has transitioned into comfort care measures for Coach Mike Leach. It’s essentially hospice care at this point.
I’m told he’s been largely if not totally nonresponsive since the cardiac event yesterday morning.
It appears to simply be a matter of time now. It all seems so unfair. Life is fleeting. Tell those you love who much you love them. Forgive, forgive, forgive.
We will not be working to break the final story. We will respect the family’s timing on all of that. Yes, we have a story ready to roll, but we will now await the official and unfortunate word from the University.
I can’t believe we’re even having these discussions. It’s so surreal. He isn’t just our football coach. He’s Mike Leach, a national treasure. I’m honored to say he was our coach for three seasons. It’s also nice to remember that he’s going out a winner.
Please remember his family, our coaches and players in your thoughts and prayers.
I love you all and Hail State!"

According to Miss. State people Robertson is very trustworthy, he's one of their best insiders.

Can confirm from Starkville.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:24 PM ^
Steve Robertson needed to find a better word to use than "final".
December 12th, 2022 at 3:40 PM ^
Yes, "penultimate" would have been a better choice.

RIP coach Leach. Scary how fast something like this happened. Take care of yourself people
December 12th, 2022 at 6:17 PM ^
you only have to say Crabtree Texas and everyone knows the game

Kind of a non-sequitor from the very serious stuff going on with Mike Leach, but if that Texas-Texas Tech classic had been an NFL game, it may have ended very differently
Due to a couple of unsportsmanlikes after the fans rushed the field, TTU kicked off from their own end zone with one second on the clock. A Texas upback caught the ball at the TTU 43. If college football had the Free Catch Kick rule, Texas could have called for a fair catch right there and kicked from that spot. From the 43, it would have been a 53-yard attempt, with no defensive player permitted to come within ten yards of the kick. With no pressure from the defense, you have to like the odds of even a college kicker nailing that one.
Moral of the story - make sure the game is actually over before you storm the field!
December 12th, 2022 at 11:38 PM ^
Does said free kick also count for 6 points?
December 13th, 2022 at 6:46 AM ^
from the 43 it'd have been a 60 yd kick.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:17 PM ^
Ugh. World is losing a gem of a man. He will be missed.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:21 PM ^
Grant Wahl now this. Just gut wrenching.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
Life is indeed fleeting.

Godspeed Coach Leach.....

Sad.Big fan of Mike Leach, read his book.Go on YT and watch some of his press conferences.Totally entertaining especially the one about wedding advice to one of the reporters.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:39 PM ^
The wedding advice was fantastic. He was bright, creative, colorful, candid, and extremely funny.
Wishes and prayers for peace and comfort for Coach Leach and his family.
December 12th, 2022 at 5:23 PM ^
He was all that, for sure. But most of all he was genuine and original. A lot of what he said may not have been for everyone (past tense assuming his passing in imminent) but it was real. Unlike so many in the public eye.
Best to Mike Leach in whatever follows this life. Peace and comfort to his family and friends.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:26 PM ^
my old school mate. beyond bummed.
God bless his family. tough, tough, tough.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:28 PM ^
My wife and I always talked about how Leach would have been the perfect replacement for Corso on Gameday after Leach retired from coaching. It's so surreal that it's looking like Corso will outlive Leach; he's truly a treasure and CFB will be a worse--and certainly much less interesting--place without him...
December 12th, 2022 at 3:32 PM ^
I never thought about that, but you are right, he would have been the perfect replacement for Corso. So sad we will never get to see that.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:36 PM ^
Looks like Craig James will outlive Leach, too. . .
December 12th, 2022 at 3:41 PM ^
That thought pisses me off. And somebody better make sure that fucker was nowhere near Starkville yesterday...
December 12th, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
But those hookers won't...

...allegedly
December 12th, 2022 at 3:31 PM ^
This is shocking. Prayers to his family, friends, and team.

Death is an unfortunate by-product of life that everyone must experience to live. But, unfortunately, all anyone can ask is when they finally add the date after the dash that they are remembered for all the good they did between the two dates.
I did not know Mike Leach, but I will remember him as someone who made this crazy sport much more enjoyable.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:15 PM ^
Good coach. Great character. The praises of his character are a little over the top. He made some pretty offensive (and arguably racist) political claims. Crazy how people canonize football coaches.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:38 PM ^
I absolutely adore Mike Leach. He is everything good about the college football world. Sad news
December 12th, 2022 at 3:39 PM ^
"We will respect the family’s timing on all of that."
Yeah, I'm not sure you managed that one.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:57 PM ^
No kidding. After running as fast as he could to post the more premature information. And then the line about having a story ready that they are going to wait to run? The only reason to print that is to pat yourself on the back for being sensitive to the family when you're doing just the opposite.
Someone above wrote that Robertson is accurate. I don't know anything about him except that he's a punk and an asshole.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:36 PM ^
A punk and an asshole? Seems a bit ridiculous
December 12th, 2022 at 5:49 PM ^
Ok he is ridiculous as well.
December 12th, 2022 at 10:29 PM ^
Beautifully played.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:35 PM ^
Recruiting types swarming the family must be awful.
December 12th, 2022 at 3:54 PM ^
Such a shame. RIP, Coach.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:00 PM ^
I don't remember how I stumbled upon this video 4-5 years ago but I really enjoyed it. It showed Mike's carefree nature and he just seems like the most down to earth person in the world. Sad news today, prayers to him & his family.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
How quickly into this interview/walk was this lady thinking "what have I gotten myself into?" This was fantastic and thanks for sharing!
December 12th, 2022 at 5:11 PM ^
In a very positive way - can you imagine the camera crew trying to keep up? I can imagine Coach Leach saying - “ Hey, this is a fun short cut, right around the Goth folks in the cemetery. Just follow me…”
December 12th, 2022 at 5:37 PM ^
Very worthwhile viewing, especially today with Coach Leach in a bad way. I read his book a few years ago and like many others found it refreshing.
December 12th, 2022 at 6:31 PM ^
This is great! Here's another Leach video:
December 12th, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
thanks for posting, but it's making me sad to watch these mike videos.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:02 PM ^
No fucking way. This is horrible.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:07 PM ^
Hope he can pull through. Leach is one of the great personalities of college football.
Will never forget the story about the fake play call sheet he dropped by the Texas sideline or the story about letting students use the practice field. Very cool guy.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:08 PM ^
This is awful news. Mike Leach is the rarest of people, especially today, a true original. Spoke his mind when others would have stayed quiet.
I didn't know the man, but he will be missed. The world will be a less interesting place without him in it
December 12th, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
Leach is only 5 years older than me, and the more I watch guys our age pass away, the more determined I get to live right and follow proper healthcare protocol for someone my age. Coaching college football is stressful - maybe more than any of us can truly appreciate. I hope these coaches take some time to take care of themselves and see a doctor at least once a year.
I pray for Coach Leach. 61 is just way too young to leave this place.
December 12th, 2022 at 4:47 PM ^
Not to give unsolicited health advice, but based on my research (disclaimer I'm no Doc!) but a healthy diet is about 80% of it, being active/exercising is the other 20%.
Forks Over Knives is a pretty good documentary that's promoting a vegan diet. After watching it I went 80-90% "plant based" and dropped my cholesterol from 225 to 135. I could never give up all red meat/fish, etc. but a plant forward diet I will be following the rest of my life due to the numerous positive health effects.
December 12th, 2022 at 5:41 PM ^
Good for you. I have personal as well as professional experience in the weight loss and health improvement fields and concur that most of the benefit is from improving one's diet. Exercise is fantastic, find one or more that you like and do it for fun. But changing what you eat is the key; unfortunately it's one of the hardest behavior changes to stick with long term.
December 12th, 2022 at 6:57 PM ^
I'm 57 and have given up added sugar and reduced my simple carbs by about 70%. I also eat mostly plants, but do eat animal protein (mostly turkey, chicken, and fish) a couple times a week. Just had my latest physical and I have numbers like a 25 year old. BP, cholesterol, blood sugar, and BMI. The diet makes a big difference. Exercise is really important, too, and for staying ahead of Old Man Time.
