Somewhat OT: 11warriors buckeye fan has cancer
The month of November is one that results in Ohio state being on my mind a lot. Naturally i go to other message boards like eleven warriors to bask in the schadenfreude of a poor performance by them against northwestern, but saw a post today that seemed deserving of posting here, because as ugly as the rivalry is, it's compassion for our rivals that makes the rivalry great.
Thoughts and prayers for Buckeyefan67.

Rivalry or no rivalry, my thoughts go out to anyone in that situation. Best of luck to Buckeyefan67.
Fuck cancer.

This post and the kind of responses I expect to it are why the OSU rivalry is so superior to other rivalries I can think of.

If folks haven't seen RIVALS yet, check out:
Funny how the science and psychology of rivalries says we need each other.; along with the closing statement in the video (I won't spoil that part -- just go watch).

Replying up here so it's seen. DelhiWolverine linked to this thread on 11w and OP has responded.
From buckeyefan67: "I wonder if some UM fan can express my appreciation on MGO for their kind words and concern. Thank you."
November 10th, 2022 at 2:36 PM ^
And another response from buckeyefan67: "If you could , would you be able to let EVERY UM fan know on MGO I was able to read their kind words and wanted to thank them . As I am unable to respond to them I hope you will for me--at least thru Hillbilly. Ftr, my uncle taught at UM many years ago ---I believe it was physics. Thank you again ."
November 10th, 2022 at 2:45 PM ^
For those wanting to help in other ways, here's the response from buckeyefan67: "thank you for the offer to help. My neighbors have moved my lawn , cleaned the weeds out of my mulch beds and have delivered no less than NINE meals to our house. Several more have been promised but I have asked them to hold off for now as my frig and freezers are stocked. And with my appetite not what it typically is, well... I hate to waste someone's good intentions. Our son is bringing over TG dinner --so I am truly blessed. Your prayers mean more to me than you know. Thank you."

Last response so far that I can see from 11w thread: "Just got back from radiation. The show of support is overwhelming and from our rivals(thank you UM fans!) as well. I thank you with tears in my eyes (heck I have been known to get tight in the throat watching old Lassie movies ;) . Tomorrow radiation and chemo and Monday more radiation and they will also drain some liquid from my lung. I never expected this support but the Lord moves in mysterious ways. I thank you ALL for your kindness and concern. May God Bless each and every one of you. Thank you."

Buckeye tears are all we ever wanted.

My prayers for him 🙏🏼 and his wife and other loved ones
Cancer, though, can just go to hell!

Thoughts and prayers to this young man and his family and to each and every one of you who have been affected by cancer.
I lost my Mom to cancer on 11/22/89. Just a few days before The Game. My last conversation with her was about watching the game together even though she insisted I should still go to it with my friends. Her funeral was during The Game.
Go Blue and God Bless 🙏

Sorry to hear, Blue.

went over and took a look. a lot of nice sentiment. this from the guy going through the cancer treatments to another post:
-I thank you for your prayers and concern. If you could , would you be able to let EVERY UM fan know on MGO I was able to read their kind words and wanted to thank them . As I am unable to respond to them I hope you will for me--at least thru Hillbilly. Ftr, my uncle taught at UM many years ago ---I believe it was physics. Thank you again .

Seems like a good dude. I hope everything works out for him (except anyone ever living long enough to see the buckeyes even the series. May that never happen for a million years).

One of the hidden benefits of the passion of sports fans is the sense of community you get. In a way he's one of us. Hopefully he gets better. We're praying and thinking of you, my man.
November 10th, 2022 at 10:06 AM ^
Is there anything we can do that will actually help?
November 10th, 2022 at 10:10 AM ^
No idea. I posted because I'm moved by people who simply ask for people to keep them in their prayers and nothing else.
November 10th, 2022 at 10:17 AM ^
Sure. To be clear, I wasn't criticizing you. Just wondering if there is some kind of material aid he needs.
November 10th, 2022 at 10:28 AM ^
Nice thought Cam. If his wife has needed him to be her caretaker for 16 years, in all likelihood they probably could use some help materially.
And yet he didn't ask for that, just the prayers.
Makes me want to try and help them even more, if possible...

At the very least we could donate the final score of The Game to the hospital or something of his choice. Maybe the American lung Association ? Just a thought.

Sending positive thoughts for recovery for both Buckeye fan and his wife.

Cancer is an enemy that Michigan and OSU fans should all gladly fight together.
All rivalry and playful banter aside, I hope he gets better. At the end of the day, football is just entertainment for the masses. At least to us fans, it is.

I often forget that the B1G is first and foremost an association of research institutions with a common academic purpose. This is a great reminder that we have more that binds us together than separates us, and all B1G schools are fighting common foes like cancer.

For what it's worth, Buckeye67, my mom beat lung cancer earlier this year. CT scan the other day was clean. Wishing you all the good luck!

FCancer.
Lost too much to it. Continuing to lose more.
Await designer immunotherapy becoming first line and commonplace treatment.
Good luck to him in his fight.

I lost my Mom to lung cancer in Jan 2020. I hope this guy's family doesn't lose him to it. Good luck, dude - it's a fight worth fighting.
Cancer resides in hell and shoves it's ugly, shit-stained face into our lives from there. It can fuck all the way off...

My dad smoked 3 packs a day for 50 years and was a landscaper who died from an unchecked mole. Cancer can suck my ass.

Friend of mine has brain cancer and a 50% chance of survival. He's 34 with a 3 year old and a 1 year old. He and his wife are teachers with gold plated insurance, but this is still going to financially ruin them. He has to wear a helmet for when he has seizures and falls down.
Cancer sucks.
Prayers to the buckeye guy too.
