Once upon a time in Michigan Stadium, the announcement for a maize out would be somewhere on your ticket stub (see Wisconsin and Michigan State). There wasn't much fanfare surrounding these announcements or neat social media graphics, just a general reminder that "on Wednesdays we wear pink, also wear maize to this one. But just this one." The stadium was maize, but apart from the student section it was a maize-ish. It's like driving around the mid-west a week after the leaves hit their peak fall colors. Up close there are still some spectacularly vibrant yellows but zoom out far enough and the entire forest becomes a weird brown that you convince yourself is still vibrant if you squint and stare at it.
This was especially true for maize-outs in October. At some point, you wake up before sunrise to go tailgating, your outdoor mercury thermometer tells your it's a brisk 50 degrees, and you grab your very not-maize jacket because not many people at the time owned a yellow jacket.
On Saturday the temperature was Big Ten Football degrees outside. Not cold but that nice, October "I'm going to wear a hoodie today and yeah I'll bring my jacket just in case." I expected a yellow-ish brown Big House.
I was not prepared for this:
That is not the student section. Well, the left-most part is. But most of that is simply Michigan fans wearing maize in Big Ten Football degree weather.
Part of the Michigan football resurgence these past two seasons has been "we are going to take your thing, rip it from its foundation, and claim it as our own." Wisconsin fans still jump around but somewhere in their hippocampus is the lingering memory of a proud tradition being eviscerated, if only for a moment. The team wiped the sweat off their head and armpits with pink towels at Iowa. They rocked out to an impromptu AC/DC light show concert (while even losing at the time).
Penn State's biggest flex is probably its whiteout and I kind of hate how much I enjoy it. It represents just how cool college football can be. It's impressively loud, looks awesome, and you can do it in late October because everyone probably owns something warm enough that's also white.
On Saturday it was the Michigan fans that stole Penn State's swagger.
I was genuinely impressed that Michigan fans pulled it off at last year's Washington game, it was warm out and maize t-shirts have been an easy sell. I think I'm more impressed that everyone pulled it off in Big Ten Football degree weather. The overall atmosphere felt quite similar to The Game last year (besides, you know, the levels of existential dread that come with it that make you want to puke).
Michigan would then go on to drag the #10 team in the country and Run the Damn Ball 1,254 feet.
I know they didn't specifically say so but do it again for Michigan State anyways.
Sponsor Note: Ok, well we don't have a sponsor.
BUT
If you'd like to support us, one of the simplest things you can do is follow us on social media (links just below) where we post way more photos than here. In the offseason I also do a LOT of wildlife/national park photography. While we're not allowed to sell any of our sports photos per our credential agreement (sorry to anyone who reached out asking about one), I sell prints from my adventures which I sell on FineArtAmerica. You can buy prints (or just look at some pretty pictures) here: Patrick Barron Art Collections
Also I just added a Katmai collection! Check out my pretty pictures of bears. Use promo code NHDXTV for 20% off.

[FRISBEE DOG after THE JUMP]
Frisbee dog?
FRISBEE DOG!
Apparently this was not on the broadcast. I got you.
We did it. We made it to Bye week. I am going to sleep for two straight weeks now. Goodnight, and #BeatStateNews

"we are going to take your thing, rip it from its foundation, and claim it as our own."
Dovetails nicely with the "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine" post from earlier.
Last year, a sportswriter from Washington came to the game and said, "They do it right here."
Yeah, well, at the risk of being immodest: Yes, we do things right here. Thank you for making an informed observation.
I remember back in the 70s a fairly impartial observer comparing M with MSU: "MSU does everything like you expect a college to do it. Michigan does it right."
Let's continue to do so. That whole difference thing....

Frisbee Dog was fun but Frisbee Dog's frisbee thrower needs to step up his game. Challenging wind conditions, I know... but a lot of those throws were uncatchable. Don't even want to guess what his Downfield Success Rate was.

Any bad PI calls?

As always, love your observations and creative writing... Particularly your Rorschach nod made me laugh, "Blake's not trapped in this room with them, they're trapped in this room with Blake"

That was my favorite picture of this bunch.

I'm enjoying your stories and commentary that you have been posting with your pictures this year, Patrick. You provide some really nice depth and insight from your photographer's perspective and I find it an interesting read every week. Great job and keep it up!

Great pics. That slippery fish in Wolverine's mouth has to be Mel Tucker. Right?

Possibly thanks to the Maize Out, M Den is sold out of maize field jackets. I'm fired up to wear maize to the Shoe this year, but I bet it will be cold.

Love the caption "Donovan Edwards in the Invisible Batmobile". Made me imagine the continuation of that photo as Edwards driving around the field like that to the end zone and the Penn State players just looking at each like WTF?

I know it might sound strange but I love you, Denard.

So this might sound more than a little sacrilegious, but I say we pair the all-blues with Maize Outs forever going forwards. They just pop off the screen and look fantastic.
Much like the Fab Five and Beilein eras where we saved maize unis for big games and had several iconic moments with them, the all-blues are on their way to doing the same things, but in football.

The crowd didn’t just look great but they sounded LOUD on TV. Loved it.

The maize-out looked great except for a certain Lions rookie who chose to wear white.

B and C were also J and J when they turned around Equal time.

That picture of Denard and Devin is my favorite. Does the heart good!

The up close photo of Devin with Denard's smiling reflection in his sunglasses is everything.

Always look forward to this. Pics and captions great.
where is Wynton Marsalis?

Patrick, you need to post the pic of Devin with Denard's reflection in them. That one made my heart sing!

I was pleasantly surprised how much maize there was.
I don't have a maize jacket, so I put my T-shirt over my jacket. Seemed to work. :)

Great job guys! Really missing being out there this season! Go Blue!

Interesting that Blake is known for eating sour patch kids before the game, and then threw up electric yellow on the first drive of the game on national TV.

Our fanbase has gotten much better at the maize out thing. Not so many "yeah, no I'm going to wear my lucky blue Paul Jokisch jersey" people anymore.
October 17th, 2022 at 8:33 PM ^
My family had a really bad experience with my fellow UM fans this past Saturday. My very quiet PA native wife wore her Penn State sweatshirt and several other UM fans were taking things past the line in their comments. One guy even pulled her hair. I am a pretty big guy, so I was able to get things squared away, but I don’t think I’ll ever get her to another game now and she was pretty upset.
October 17th, 2022 at 11:16 PM ^
Sorry to hear this happened, Commie.
Frames Janklin is fair game, but respectful oppo fans should be off limits, regardless of whether or not they have an escort sporting M attire.
We need to be better than this.

If you can identify the perpetrators -- i.e., if it happened while you were in your seats -- I hope you'll consider contacting the athletic department and letting them know. With the StubHub partnership, there's a good chance they can find the person responsible and make sure they get banned from future home games.
And I hope with time she'll reconsider. Ann Arbor isn't East Lansing, after all. The law of averages suggests she'd do better next time regardless… if there is a next time.
But on behalf of the non-insane Michigan fans who were at the game, I apologize to you and your wife.

That last picture really gives a clear contrast between Mazi Smith and literally any other human running out. His one leg is the size of Clemons' HIPS. Goodness he's a unit. Beautiful shots all around
