B12 in talks to add 4 PAC12 Schools per CBS Sports
Per Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports, the Big12 is in deep discussions to add up to 6 Pac12 schools to the conference: Arizona, Arizona St, Utah, and Colorado and then possibly Washington and Oregon too.
We should add Washington and Oregon before they jump. If 20 teams is inevitable, I’d rather add them than get stuck with ACC leftovers
I think they'll be hanging out there on the Left Coast without a dance partner for a while. If ND is seriously considering joining a conference fulltime, I expect the SEC to make a run at them as well. Until ND makes a move, I think the B1G and SEC are standing still.
To me that feels too much like feeding ND's sense of importance. I wish the BIG would just move without them - if they come back later, fine
We don’t need to add ND, and they don’t really need the B1G. Add UW, Oregon, Cal, Stanford. ND can play its 5 ACC games, and they’ll play about 4-5 B1G teams (USC, Stanford, and 2-3 of the teams between Chicago and Happy Valley. Throw in Navy and a random G5 school or two and that’s their schedule. They’d still rather have their NBC contract (likely much more than 1/20th of the B1G deal), all their rivalries, and only have to make one west coast road trip a year.
Meanwhile, the B1G has a 6-team west coast pod for scheduling purposes, so they can all play each other each year, and limit their eastward trips to two or three per season. Same is true for other sports; staying at 16 means that USC and UCLA play 9 conference road basketball games at least two time zones away. They need additional teams reasonably close to have a somewhat feasible travel schedule across all sports.
A six-team pod at least allows them to play half their conference schedule in their own time zone, with only five long trips. And that means 2-3 west coast trips for the 14 Eastern/Central time zone schools instead of 1, so the increased travel burden is fairly minimal.
College Football is Dead!
Long Live College Football!
Let ND go to the SEC, get their asses kicked and become irrelevant
Agree. Oregon and Washington would be a new market. We already have most of ND's fan base within the BigTen footprint.
Let ND have fun in the SEC.
Oregon and Wash just seem like the most natural fits alongside the LA schools. Otherwise they’re really on an island and it’s just weird.
ND to the SEC is like a preppie kid walking into a biker bar.
I would freaking love it if ND joined the SEC.
I think the B16 will have their choice of any team not in SEC after the new TV deal
I think they'd have to add Oregon and Oregon St. as a pair if they added two more. I get having USC and UCLA, but logistically it makes sense to add 2 more and I'm betting they'll do one of the 4 pairs left.
Washington/Washington State would have been a bit more interesting a few years ago when both teams were more prominent. Oregon/Oregon State lets face it is all about Nike. Cal and Stanford would be nice due to all the new teams being added from one state, big enrollment, and endowment. Arizona and Arizona state are both huge enrollments. I get they want to compete with the SEC and land bigger/better schools, and I don't think one of those 4 groups really stands out as the leader.
At this point though, if the Big 10 is now including California, why stop there. Get Clemson from the ACC whenever their media rights are up
Absolutely not. The B1G has all the leverage at this point so there’s no sense in taking dead weight like Oregon State or Washington State that bring absolutely nothing of value.
If Oregon and Washington are adamant that OSU/WSU be brought along, then shake their hands and wish them luck in the Big 12. Oregon and UW don’t have any leverage to be throwing around demands. It’s either join the B1G or get left out of the new CFB power landscape.
I agree, if those games are so sacred to them then schedule OOC. Similar to Iowa/Iowa St.
This was worth a +1. A pair should be 2 good programs e.g. Ore/Wash in a similar geo, not hangers on who happen to be in the same state. We have 2 hangers on out east already. If ND does join, not sure the Clemson move which basically has been a SEC school already anyway, would rather have NC.
From what I have been reading it is not necessarily the schools that are making the demands, but the state gov't. From the schools standpoint, yeah dedicating 1 OCC game to play the version of Lil Bro would be fine with them in exchange for BIG$$$$$ from the B16 (soon to be B20)
We should add Washington and Oregon before they jump.
They won't jump to the Big 12 unless they have to. That conference is hardly in better shape than the Pac-12. This is them covering their bases in case the Big Ten doesn't come calling.
How much would Phil Knight pay to get into the the B1G?
Washington and Oregon aren't going to the B12. They'll hold out for the Big Ten. But yes, I don't know why the Big ten is even waiting on ND to add Washington and Oregon. To your point, 20 is inevitable. Add them now and still hold a spot for ND.
Does Oregon to a trash conference help with D. Moore at all?
Lol Colorado.
When I started watching college football as a kid, they were a top-5 level national power. Turned out to be a historical aberration, I guess. Especially after Gary Barnett salted the earth (and Dan Hawkins spilled toxic waste everywhere for good measure)
Bill McCartney ran Colorado's football program during it's glorious heydays. He was a direct disciple of Bo Schembechler.
I just wish he'd gone to run the Promise Keepers a year earlier
Do Washington St. and Oregon St. drop to the Mountain West?
If the PAC12 does indeed implode, that seems the likely bet.
The PAC12 could also find some semblance of stability by keeping their current teams (minus USC/UCLA obviously) and adding Boise St, SDSU, Colorado St, and then a Utah St/Hawaii/SJSU/Fresno St type team.
Wouldn’t make them a B1G/SEC level conference, but they’d be roughly on par with the Big 12.
Most likely, unless the PAC12 tries to remain a thing and absorbs the Mountain West. Either way, they're probably left without a big boy chair when the music stops.
That's kind of embarrassing for Colorado.
You want to add half the reasons the Pac12 is worth about 1/3 the Big Ten in tv rights? Hmmm.
Maybe the biggest reason is that 2/3 of the country is already in bed when many Pac 12 games start.
Fair point, but they might be better than some of the existing schools (like Kansas State) by a few measures.
Aside, I wonder if the Big 12 would still invite Houston (cultural and geographical fit aside) if they had a time machine.
It's the only thing the B12 can do to survive. The USC-UCLA move made it inevitable the PAC12 and B12 would effectively merge, it was just a question of whether the PAC12 would B12 teams or vice versa.
So Big12 is going to add the teams that the Big10 doesn’t want
Compared to the remaining Big 12, it’s a treasure trove of new TV markets.
Also, compared to other options in say the AAC, MWC, Sun Belt, MAC, etc it's a treasure trove of schools and markets.
If I'm the B12, I'd be thrilled to add an Oregon or Washington to the conference.
You know that guy who plays monopoly and ends up with Baltic and Mediterranean avenue as his monopoly? That’s the big 12
Perfect analogy! Maybe even a little Vermont and Connecticut and whatever the other light blue one is.
Asian avenue
I lol'ed
Not sure why, but laughing at other schools and conferences doesn't give me the woody it seems to give some people. Kind of a painful situation for a lot of these schools, no? We don't do the good stuff we try to teach our kids in kindergarten: empathy, compassion, etc. Or maybe those are lib values, and we just want our kids to know how to laugh harshly and crush stuff.
Usually I'd agree. But we're talking about sportsball.
Same. These are the unchecked consequences of greed and mismanagement that I'm laughing at. The young men on those teams will still get to play football.
Yes but this does have an effect that reaches past sportsball. The BTAA for example is a huge prize for any university to be a part of. There’s a big reason AAU status is so important for prospective B1G teams.
Assuming the PAC12 has a similar consortium, schools like Oregon St and Wazzu losing the resources of schools like USC, UCLA, Stanford and Cal would really be unfortunate on the academic side of things.
Me neither. We killed the PAC 12 just as the SEC killed the Big 12 last year with their 2 marquee programs.
It'd be like if Michigan and Ohio State left the Big 10. Devestating.
Neg me all you want, 'bagger, but if you don't understand how B1G a deal AAU membership/academics is to the Big Ten, I'm not going to convince you anyway.
Besides, you misspelled 'devistating'.
How many households does AAU membership bring to the Big 10 Network? Dozens I'm sure.
Is it s nice criteria to have, absolutely. If Notre Dame wants in, no one at FOX or ESPN gives 2 shits about AAU.
Like it or not, within the hierarchy of the Big Ten exist Chancellors and Presidents who do hold enough power to ensure that the conference upholds academics.
Unlike the SEC, the Big Ten is NOT all about only the billion$ generated by athletics.
Like it or not...
Dreaded double-post, so here's video of Phil Knight and Oregon fans marching on the Big Ten Office.
yeah, this sucks all around. Schools are going to get destroyed by this because people let ESPN and advertisers call the shots. Who cares about those schools that didn't get picked, UM will have a 3rd practice facility only used on weekends!!!! Plus, afternoons that were usually spent watching 2 football games will be spent watching 1 because the commercial breaks will be even longer than they are now. This is going to be awesome!!!!
football all day you say?
