"Iowa has faced 2 better RB's than Haskins"

Submitted by Gameboy on December 3rd, 2021 at 10:54 AM

This is an actual quote from a podcast from Black Heart Gold Pants site (go to 31:50 for the quote).

What does PFF (or OSU defensive line) know?

If they think Hassan Haskins is only the third best RB that they have faced all year, I don't think they will have any idea what hit them after the dust settles on Saturday.

Regardless, Iowa ain't faced no RB combo as good as ours though. Even on a bum ankle if Corum gets free like he did against OSU he's going to score.

One thing I've noticed from opposing fans is that they definitely see Haskins as just a guy.  It's not just anti-Michigan bias either.

I think there is an obsession with speed and home run plays that underrates just how effective Haskins is.  I notice myself do this too with other teams btw.  If a team has a real home run hitter at RB I get nervous, but if it's more of a between the tackles guy who's a load to bring down, it feels easier to stop.  "Just wrap up, be in the right spots, and he's not gonna beat us by himself."  It seems like easier to accomplish than dealing with a speedster who can outrun your D.

But it does seem like a bad bias at this point and watching Hassan makes me realize that (tbh anyone who has watched Marshawn Lynch should realize that).  He has enough burst to break big chunks even if he doesn't get to the end zone.  He's capable of falling forward for 1-2 yards after contact if you hit him with a lineman, particularly from the side.  He's capable of grinding for 3-4 even if he gets hit by an LB.  And if you are sending a CB or a safety at him you need multiple guys or he will drag you for 5+ (or hurdle you lol).

But people really underrate that because they are more scared of 60 yard TD's.  In a way this applies to WR's too.  Guys who get open underneath through savvy and consistently gain YAC that doesn't result in TD's are less scary than guys who take the top off the D.  I knew Jaxson Smith-Njigba was good for example, but I was more worried about Olave and Wilson.  There is a comfort to being able to fight another day, but sometimes that comfort can be illusory (and in the case of both Haskins and Smith-Njigba, I think it is).

Good thing Haskins isn't our only offensive weapon then, huh.

I mean they lost to a very one-dimensional Wisconsin team. They beat ISU because of turnovers more than anything else.

So even if this is true (and it's very debatable), Iowa has a lot more to worry about than just Haskins. Michigan is the most complete offense they have faced all year.

I listened to their podcast today to get a better sense of Iowa's personnel, and let me tell you how thankful I am for Brian, Seth, and Alex. These Iowa dudes literally didn't know anything about Michigan, and were serving such weak analysis.

I've seen Iowa fans beat their chests about how formidable and improved the team is after their loss to Wisconsin.  They are on a 4 game win streak-- against NW, Minn, Illinois,  and Nebraska-- who are a combined 12-24 in league play. And it's not like Iowa blew anyone out, either.

Having now listened to the entire podcast, in the end, the two guys broadcasting it are just hopeful Hawkeye fans, neither predicting outright success for their team, believing that the Wolverines will win but may not cover the 10 point spread and exceed the 43 point over/under.

Their contention is that Michigan's offense isn't overpowering, that the big win over Ohio State will diminish its performance on both sides of the ball and that winning turnover differential will mean everything for an unlikely Iowa upset. One guy predicts that Michigan wins 29-13, the other offered the prospect of an Iowa victory if everything goes right and the game is close in the fourth quarter.

They believe heavily in the Iowa defense, its ability to create turnovers and that creative scoring opportunities presented by all three facets of their team will keep the outcome from getting out of hand and, if things fall their way, lead to victory.

All in all, kind of what you expect them to say, except it was surrounded by a lot of hopeful bullshit without any statistical evidence to support their POV or conclusions about the varying effectiveness of Michigan's attack on offense and defense.

There are an oddly large amount of optimistic iowa fans on youtube, fb, etc. I get being excited but there are a freakish number of "Iowa will win!" facebook youtube videos.

Go Blue...kick their ass!

I'm starting to get angry...which means absolutely nothing to the teams performance lol.

Define "better"

Faster?  Probably.  More elusive, probably that too.

Able to smash thought your defense for tons of yards after contact and slowly grind you to dust over an entire game?  Yeah, they haven't faced ANYONE like Haskins.

Bring it on.

Hassan Haskins is the manifestation of a RB from Jim Harbaugh's imagination.

Like one of Harbaugh's favorite players ever, Frank Gore, he takes away your will for 4 quarters.

Not only do DB's not want to tackle him by the 4th quarter, LBs too start shying away from contact and making weak arm tackles.

Pretty confused why all these Iowa fans think they have an upper hand in this game somehow. Just grasping at straws because we've played them close and have lost to them in the past

Iowa: allow UM to introduce you to Thunder and Lightning. Arguable without question about Hassan being the best back they have seen. But have they faced a 2 headed monster this season? Hell, a 3rd head is starting to pop up now.

Good.  Some more fuel for the fire.  When he gets 4-5 yards every play after first contact, let's see how their DB's are feeling.

Not to mention some Corum and Edwards action to add to the mix.

Like, "two RBs stitched together to make one super Frankenstein RB-better-than-Haskin"? Is that what they mean? Because that would be kind of badass.

Alright I was bored and actually listened to the Podcast. Yes they did say that about the RB's but they were trying to find some positives for this game. Both picked Michigan to cover the spread and win with the possibility of a blowout there. Had a lot of really good things to say about this Michigan team and especially the defense. Basically they're hoping Michigan is emotionally drained from The Game and don't come full blast because they know were a terrible matchup for Iowa.

Seemed like a decent couple of guys and I would definitely shoot the shit about football over a few brews with 'em.

Bullshit.

They are facing the two best backs they have faced in the same game and the best back catching the ball out of the backfield.

And the best fucking OL.

Disrespekt!

Nah, this is fine. I am not upset that their fanbase is charting a path to victory.

Immediately after saying this he goes on to compliment the overall M running game.
