Two thoughts I have on the coaching carousel as it pertains to Michigan
One, I hope none of our assistants are even looking to interview right now with the bigten champ game coming up. That’s how you lose games by losing focus.
Two, we have stability that none of these other programs can point to three weeks from signing day. Our coach is even giving bonus money back to other employees. This should help us land several of these top kids, especially with our success this year. Kids should see these coaches disloyalty and greed vs Harbaugh’s loyalty and lack of greed.

I just hope we can keep Gattis for next year. Might be tough now that he's a Broyles finalist (of which there are only five). But damn, he's been great this year, and seems to have a mind-meld with Jim that's very productive for all involved
November 29th, 2021 at 10:21 PM ^
Me too. We have momentum and him and Harbaugh seem in sync finally
November 29th, 2021 at 10:37 PM ^
Money talks, but Gattis has to be thrilled with the idea of having the frosh trio of JJ, Edwards, and Anthony in the coming years.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:43 PM ^
I wonder if a former commit down in Austin thinks “hmm let’s see if I can get a do over”
November 30th, 2021 at 12:11 AM ^
As much as he would be a huge asset, but given the offense they run and the numbers he put up, probably not.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:42 PM ^
Sam and DG were talking today like it was already known inside the program Gattis has a HC job lined up. They didn't elaborate, but made it sound like he is expected to get a HC job, and he is deserving of it more than people give him credit.
My guess would be his alma mater Wake Forest once Clawson moves up in the carousel.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:03 PM ^
I thought they just renewed Clawson?
Edit: they did just give him a long term extension. The did it quick when some of these other jobs were opening up.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:30 PM ^
If Gattis leaves, I would imagine that Matt Weiss becomes the OC. Don't overlook this guy and how steady the program has been since he got here.
November 30th, 2021 at 6:23 AM ^
If Gattis leaves:
Weiss to OC, Bellamy to WR, Donte Williams to S, Domini Jackson to the recruiting class.
November 30th, 2021 at 8:50 AM ^
That would be a great Plan B if we need it!
November 29th, 2021 at 10:49 PM ^
Man, seemed like only a few months ago that people were slamming Gattis and wanted him fired. Oh, it WAS just a few months ago.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:26 PM ^
right? like a couple weeks ago 'we' wanted him shipped to Va Tech
November 30th, 2021 at 8:39 AM ^
Michigan “fans” have been dumping on him all year, can you really blame him if he moved on?
November 29th, 2021 at 10:16 PM ^
Sadly, just like many of the head coaches and assistant coaches, lots of these players are just in it for themselves
November 29th, 2021 at 10:21 PM ^
Heaven forbid players plying their trade do so for their own benefit.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:26 PM ^
Do you mean the recruits? I mean, I think they should be in it for themselves. They are deciding where to go to college--who else should they be thinking of?
November 30th, 2021 at 1:55 AM ^
notinmyhouse = notonmylawn
November 30th, 2021 at 9:06 AM ^
comin' in hot with some serious silliness.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:17 PM ^
I'll say it again then: It's nice to have some stability. Feels like so many blueblood athletic departments are run via message board comments.
And I know the "Michigan Man" concept has been deservedly mocked in some cases, but I like having a coach that is truly a fit here more than anywhere else, whose personality embodies the culture and vice versa. Lincoln Riley et al are just shiny, interchangeable mercenaries who will leave the next time another school adds an extra dollar to their contract. IDK, even though it's been 15 years, Saban Alabama still feels like store-bought, canned championship teams. Their identity feels very corporate more than anything else.
November 30th, 2021 at 10:10 AM ^
That's the beauty of having Juwan Howard and Jim Harbaugh coaching at their alma mater. They're not looking to make it to the top of the college basketball/football world with the next flashy job opening. They plan on bringing the top to Ann Arbor.
November 30th, 2021 at 12:10 PM ^
Jim and Juwan care about the University and not just their piece of it. The pictures of them on the field after The Game, surrounded by thousands of players, students, alums, and fans, warmed my heart.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:18 PM ^
I said this in another thread, but I don't know why so many people here root for schools like Texas, USC, and Florida to continue to suck. Those schools (and FSU and Miami) sucking the past decade is the reason that Ohio State has ascended to the rarified elite air of only two or three programs. OSU has feasted on talent that in normal times would have stayed at home in Texas, Florida, and California.
The difference between OSU 2014-2021 versus before is not Urban Meyer. It's dozens of talented kids from the Sun Belt going to OSU instead of their flagship schools. The single thing that would quickly bring OSU back to close to our level talent-wise is Texas, USC, and Florida/Florida State/Miami getting their shit together and keeping talent in-state. Cheer for good hires from those schools.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:23 PM ^
Certainly they've raided Texas but I think they've built a solid foundation as DBU and WR university now. Build a foundation of elite position groups and good things happen. Lincoln Riley is considered the QB guru, the #1 pick producer. That's what's great about this run for Michigan and bringing Harbaugh back -- we are breaking through with some elite players and units.
We should become lineman u and RB university. What kid on earth in those projected position groups wouldn't give Michigan a look now?
November 29th, 2021 at 10:27 PM ^
Watch how many elite California wide receivers or any position group go to Ohio State this next recruiting cycle now that Lincoln Riley is at USC
November 29th, 2021 at 10:32 PM ^
If that's the case, then it would be.... exactly the same as it currently is.
Only 4 players on OSU are from CA, and only 1 is a WR (Olave) -- and BTW, Olave was not an elite California receiver (he was #399 in the composite)
November 30th, 2021 at 1:14 AM ^
I don't recall the exact scenario, but OSU knew Olave was massively underrated. I think they were scouting someone else on his team and saw him at that point.
November 30th, 2021 at 7:18 AM ^
Same with UM. IIRC, they went after Olave as if he was a 5*.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:14 PM ^
I hadn't thought of it that way. Good point. Hook 'Em!
November 30th, 2021 at 12:16 AM ^
Texas has had great recruiting the last several years but there is a culture problem there with athletics in general and especially football.
Too soft to compete at the highest level. They will be a disaster in the SEC unless they change that culture.
247 rank...
2018 - 3
2019 - 3
2020 - 8
They have done nothing with that. I know, change is hard, pick a tough ass coach who doesn't put up with bullshit and they should be top 10 every year. Too much woke in Austin.
November 30th, 2021 at 5:59 AM ^
Agree
makes it all the more impressive Harbaugh did it in super woke A2
November 30th, 2021 at 12:38 AM ^
IDK Florida really sucked before Spurrier then Urban, they've been mediocre without those two, FSU sucked hard before Bowden, barely a P5 school, mediocre without him. Miami has had a string of mediocrity since they had to join a real conference. Texas has pretty much sucked since the SWC broke apart and they had to play more than two tough games a year.
USC being mediocre has never made sense, but other than Pete Carroll, which USC coach in the last 40 years has had sustained success there on a national level?

This was an on topic post and positive one at that and wasn’t a repeat post of something two minutes ago but someone always has to just come in and auto downvote. Provide your thoughts on the post at least. I provided one concern that would relevant to us…remember Durkin shopping during bowl season? Two, I pointed out about the Harbaugh loyalty and how that should affect us positively with recruits.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:28 PM ^
Downvotes are mostly stupid outside of real bad or outright troll posts but do yourself a favor and don't care. Like, at all. Not even a little. There are accounts on this site and all online forums that exclusively exist to downvote anonymously and without reason.
Stop caring. Post what you know and/or believe and let it be that. You'll enjoy this site and life more in general that way.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:31 PM ^
You’re right. Usually don’t, I guess with the excess duplicate posts and outright crazy takes, I thought this one would be a no brainer. I’m all good now! Getting over covid, it messes with your mind and psyche!!
November 29th, 2021 at 11:01 PM ^
remember Durkin shopping during bowl season?
Bowl season? If only we were so lucky.
It was OSU week.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:04 PM ^
Oh yeah, covid brain fog. I’ve made several memory mistakes this week. Like assuming it was Hawkins with the crucial interception drop years back when it was Matellus.
November 30th, 2021 at 9:40 AM ^
No, Hawkins gaff (not an interception) was against Notre Dame.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:29 PM ^
Gattis is the only guy I’m slightly worried about honestly unless someone tries to pull Clinkscale as a coordinator maybe?
November 30th, 2021 at 2:20 AM ^
What about MacDonald? He concerns me a bit because at his age, he may come across as a boy wonder. Also, though he’s done a fine job at M, I wonder if he isn’t better suited to the NFL game just technically.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:41 PM ^
Funny how a victory over OSU changes the narrative. For the entire Gattis tenure the fans have tried to run him out of town. Now, those same folks are praying he stays.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:44 PM ^
If Gattis gets a (much earned) HC job, is it too early for Mike Hart to OC (most likely HC in waiting)?
November 29th, 2021 at 11:05 PM ^
What about Jay? He’s been all over the staff and every damn position he touches it turns to gold.
November 30th, 2021 at 12:37 AM ^
I'm sorry bro. The running game has been ok in past years and that's being nice. We haven't seen an elite running game since Wheatley left. Skilled positions should be coached by people who have done it, especially those who have done it at a high level.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:24 PM ^
Sherrone Moore is next in line. He is the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. What he did with the o-line this year was impressive. I’m glad the OU job is opening up now and not next season. If Moore had another year under his belt, he’d be a candidate for that job.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:36 PM ^
I’m good with that too. Hope it wouldn’t detract from the excellent job he’s done with the line though. Being in charge of the OC is a whole other level of responsibility that will garner all of his game time attention.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:47 PM ^
Good offensive line coaches often turn out to be bad OCs. My guess would be Weiss or Hart. I would also see what happens with raises this year. My guess is the staff will be getting some big raises this year, and Gattis could get one of the bigger ones to keep him in town another year.
November 30th, 2021 at 12:28 AM ^
I'm sure there is anecdotal evidence for good OL coaches make bad OCs, but I'd bet an actual analysis would show OL coaches are just as good at OC as WR, RB or QB coaches. It's simply hard to be a good OC.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:45 PM ^
We need to keep the entire staff. Every position is playing well.
Play calls
OL
QB
RB
TE
WR
DL
LB
Secondary
Even special teams.
Finest coaching job by a Michigan staff in decades.
Give me this staff and a bunch of 3-4 stars over losing some key staff and getting 10 5 stars any day.
November 29th, 2021 at 10:59 PM ^
Saban has a new set of assistants every two years.
November 29th, 2021 at 11:18 PM ^
We don’t recruit like Bama and his chinks in the armor have started to show up the last few years. Yes, they are still elite but they aren’t invincible anymore and I think staff turnover did that.
