From 2014:
Note rule change since 2014 to specifically cite clapping as per this article:

There are plenty of reasons to celebrate last night’s victory, but you’re grasping at straws on this one.

....maybe, but it helps make clear how nebrasska while on defense got called for a "Delay of Game" penalty.

NFL has a similar penalty- defenses were simulating snap counts or calling out the snap count to make the o line false start. Doesn’t get called much but I do remember seeing it. I wondered if that was going to get called because it seemed like Nebraska d line and linebackers were chattering and flinching around a lot early in the game trying to get Michigan to flinch.
It does remind me of Don Brown’s defense causing a false start a couple years ago when his defenders yelled “MOVE!”- I guess that was legal.

Watching the replay, I don't think it should have been a penalty on Nebraska bc the LB was trying to get the D's attention, not simulate the snap count, but it is what it is. Similarly, the Don Brown "MOVE" call was also borderline, but again not trying to simulate the snap count.

It's a very gray line on what counts and doesn't count as a penalty. The rules have to allow for the Defense to communicate to each other, make changes, and use any means necessary to gain the attention of their teammates (especially at road games). BUT, it appears the rules changed to include clapping as a No No because that's what the Offense/QB on a lot of teams use as an official snap count/hike. Yelling "Move" wouldn't be a penalty until more teams have their offense yell "Move" to snap the ball and the rules committee decides to add that to "the list".

I think we all know what disconcerting signals means now anyway, got called on us against buttgers a few years back

TAM was flagged for the same penalty twice against Alabama.

That only helped Alabama a little, but not enough to win! ?

Maybe this rule needs to be enforce more across college football. I noticed our guys on defense where not clapping. The NE guys on defense were clapping some even after that penalty.

Hoisted by their own petard.

Feels like one of those things that's technically a penalty but just rarely gets called. Always frustrating when it happens to your team though!

Martinez constantly clapping before every snap was kind of annoying.

And to complete the cycle, Harbaugh's comments about the defense clapping as well as illegal formations on Nebraska's part:
