OT: NC State forfeits CWS semi-final due to COVID
Sounds like about half their team has it. Sucks for the players—they were 1 win from the title series.
I should clarify--half their team is out due to the protocols. But that doesn't mean they all have it--I'm sure some of them are being held out due to contact with those that do have it.
So trying to understand.
Multiple team members who HAD been vaccinated, ALSO tested positive for Covid?
Interesting.
Somehow I strongly doubt that you are really trying to understand.
Instead of being rude, perhaps you could elucidate and help us understand?
No?
Just wanna be rude and stalk all my posts?
Ok then.
You have no interest in learning. You just like to sprout ignorance. Having the vaccine doesn’t mean you won’t catch the virus, it does mean that if you catch it, it is much less likely to be serious. Plenty of data continues to back that up, It is bizarre to me that someone would actually find joy in spreading misinformation that can serve no purpose other than discouraging people from taking a vaccine that could prevent both serious illness in themselves and spread to others. I have to admit, you are consistent. You choose the same ignorant approach when it comes to climate change,
Having the vaccine doesn't magically make you 110% immune, just like every other fucking vaccine in existence
It DOES drastically reduce the likelihood of severe illness and/or death.
The anti-vax misinformation out there is so painfully bad.
LOL ok.
They claim 95-98% efficacy, but these players just HAPPENED to have the doses that weren't effective.
Got it.
And the recurrence we are seeing with the "break-through" cases that the CDC no longer tracks?
Got it.
Not misinformation if it's the truth.
In my experience, truth doesn't require sarcasm.
What makes you think their covid vaccines weren't effective? The point of the vaccine is to introduce antibodies to your body to help your body fight the virus. The vaccine is not a COVID force field.
If you really are confused about the vaccine, direct your questions to your general health practitioner. You trust your GHP with your health, right? They should be able to clear up your questions.
Originally they were gonna let them play with 13 on the bench. Which, is kind of BS since they forced M hockey to quite with one pos test as I recall.
also, were they vaxxed?
I could be wrong, but from what I've seen, it was two unvaccinated players that tested positive, putting almost all of the other unvaccinated players into contract tracing, which turned out was more than half of the team.
Because of the whole cluster fuck, NCAA then decided to test the vaccinated players, and 4 came back positive, all four are asymptomatic.
Players chose to put their season in jeopardy by not getting vaxed, then *surprise surprise*, their season gets ended because of their decision. Well, if it isn't the consequences of my own actions!
Decisions have consequences. Sports has always been used to teach lessons about life. Big lesson to learn here but for some reason I bet they will just blame others on this.
Exactly this. We've seen quite a few other NCAA team's seasons end early because of Covid outbreaks (including M hockey, damnit) so the coach and all of the players absolutely knew the risks and what could potentially happen if they didn't take all precautions like getting vaxed. We are far enough into this shit, that this should not be a surprise to anyone.
Lo and behold, the NC State team didn't take all precautions and had an outbreak. I would bet good money, as you said, they are blaming others for this instead of realizing it was their actions (or lack of actions) that contributed to this result.
10.1.1Were vaccinations an option for our hockey team though back in March? Not sure our players were eligible at the time.
For real - it's almost July now and a significant portion of the population has been vaccinated. I'm surprised the coaches/teams/athletic departments didn't just make every member of the team and surrounding staff get the damn shot. If they were holding out for personal reasons or for "freedom" or "liberty" or whatever other nonsense, I hope they're happy - they cost their team a chance at a championship. And all these NFL dickheads who are proudly announcing they won't get vaxxed are just asking to cost their team a game (and with it, stats and bonus $). The pro leagues should institute a rule that if you don't get the vaccine you can't play. Can't believe it's even a debate at this point.
If true, man their teammates have got to be pissed at them
Nah, mad at those filthy libs for conspiring a hoax with the NCAA to take them down. Anti-vaccine crazy is conspiracy theory crazy.
You joke, but there are already pics of Fauci in a Vandy jersey circulating on twitter. I've seen more than a few people suggesting this is some sort of conspiracy, including "NittanyFan" in this very thread. People are insane.
10.1.1I’m not joking. We’re all aware of just how dumb and irresponsible both conspiracy theorists and sports fans can get. This is a happy Venn diagram marriage of two incredibly derpy demographics.
(1) The NCAA decided to announce this news at ..... 2:11 AM Eastern Time. Uh huh.
(2) I suppose we're lucky that NC State didn't actually win Friday. Would this be the same result if NC State had eliminated Vanderbilt? Such that there wouldn't even be a Championship series?
(3) Despite this situation necessitating NC State being booted from the tournament, the NC State team was also allowed INTO the ballpark (this picture is at 2:41 AM ET, after the Mississippi State vs Texas game finally ended) to take this picture. Note that there are 19 players in this picture, more than the 13 that were allowed to play in NC State's game Friday afternoon. Hmmm. Is this a serious situation or not?

Is this a serious situation or not?
It’s a political situation. It’s exceedingly important that we look like we’re doing things, without actually doing things. Some people may die, but that’s a sacrifice we’ve shown we’re willing to make.
It's less of a "political" situation, and more of a "the NCAA sucks and is totally inept" situation.
10.1.1Well, whatever this is (I have my own suspicions), I expect this.
Nobody from the (1) NCAA leadership, (2) Douglas County, Nebraska health department or (3) Division I Baseball Committee will host a press conference today and answer any and all questions over this decision.
Someone from one of those 3 groups made this decision. That's fine. But those folk should get up there and defend the decision.
Someone from one of those 3 groups made this decision. That's fine. But those folk should get up there and defend the decision.
Honestly, who cares? I didn't demand a press conference when M hockey was booted from the tourney, did you? It's a shitty situation that has happened time and time again when teams get outbreaks. I don't need a bullshit press conference from some company suit to regurgitate policy/legal issues.
10.1.1"But those folk should get up there and defend the decision."
What is there to defend? These medical protocols have been in place all season long. Covid has been a thing that's ruined many teams opportunities all year long. Vaccinations have been available for months. Every player, coach, and school representative for every participating team knew these rules and protocols would be enforced.
Yet, here you are still whining about conspiracies. How about just STFU, get vaccinated, and stop having to worry about this shit?
I'm not whining about a conspiracy.
"A person who questions authority" does not automatically mean "the same person believes in conspiracy theories." Those 2 groups don't necessarily overlap completely (or even have a large overlap).
Anyway, there are legitimate questions that one could ask said officials:
(1) Why were the NC State baseball team allowed to take a picture in the stadium --- with ground crew and other people around (who'd they'd theoretically be a threat to) --- after their Saturday game vs. Vanderbilt had already been declared a no contest?
(2) Reportedly, NC State had their vaccinated players tested on Friday evening, despite the fact that only unvaccinated players were subject to testing per the baseball committee's rules. And reportedly four of those vaccinated players tested positive late Friday Night. Is that true? How much did that effect the decision to declare Saturday's game a no contest? If Wolfpack vaccinated players are now being tested, shouldn't we also now be testing vaccinated Vanderbilt, Miss State and Texas players?
(3) There are 20,000+ people at each of the College World Series games. If any NC State player who tests positive is not allowed to participate in a baseball game at that stadium, why aren't we also testing all of the fans and not allowing any of them who are positive to watch the game?
Are you serious with this shit, dude? I guess I'll oblige you with answers, even though I'm pretty sure you're just Sea-Lioning.
1) Who gives a shit? Someone made a mistake and allowed it at the stadium. Shouldn't have done that, but the NCAA is inept. My guess would be poor communication with the umpires who should have told them to leave.
2) Reportedly, 2 un-vaxed players tested positive, prompting contact tracing and the testing of vaxed players. This isn't that complicated.
3) This is a really stupid question. There is no way this is in good faith. I've seen some of your other posts around here, and you aren't this stupid. This is 100% sea-lioning.
Yesterday, World meters reported 387 US Covid deaths. Multiply that by 365 days per year and you get over 140,000 deaths in a year. That would have been the. 6th leading cause of death in the US in the US in 2019. Accidents was 3rd at about 173,000 and Alzheimer’s was actually 6th at about 121,500. Well over 95% of those dying were unvaccinated.
NittanyFan, just shut up already. You pretty much only post on topics that have been tied to politics, and you just contribute written puke filled with ignorance. You just look dumb.
You are forgetting the 4th group that made this decision, all the people who choose not to get vaccinated. While a very small number have legitimate medical reasons to make that choice, North Carolina ranks 37th in percentage of population vaccinated at 38.9%. For comparison, 3 states: Vermont. Maine and Massachusetts have vaccinated over 60% of their population.
Please go back to your Qanon cult compound.
I honestly don't understand why you're allowed to continue posting your bullshit here.
Covid's still a thing? I just went to dinner last night, and there were no masks, there was no social distancing at the bar when people were climbing over me to order drinks, and none of the wait staff had masks on either. The only thing to remind you of Covid was the lack of menus. Hell work is dropping all protocols required to enter every morning also. It seems like everything is like the old US military code, don't ask, don't tell. Whatever, I'm vaccinated.
It is beyond me why anyone over the age of 12 has not already been vaccinated. That's not on the NCAA. That's on NC State or some part of their team and support staff.
Honestly, the same thing is going to happen somewhere in the country with football teams in the Fall, and support staff, and the fan base. I'm glad that UofM is requiring all students in residence on campus to be vaccinated in order to attend this Fall. But not to require the support staff and faculty and even fans means that there will continue to be outbreaks.
Agree completely.
Yeah, everyone on NC State's roster (assuming they're all over 18) has had access to a vaccine for months now. Teams and players have in the past been barred from playing because of positive Covid tests. This is an extremely solvable problem with recent evidence of how it can go badly for your team and yet at least two guys on that team weren't vaccinated. That's on NC State for not getting everyone protected.
From above, it appears that players who HAD been vaccinated ALSO tested positive.
How is that "...on NC State for not getting everyone protected."
If the shot works, I mean.
Troll account detected.
10.1.1Lets not even try to hide it:
First post of new account at 5:14 - baffled that someone vaccinated could still get covid. 9 more posts in the next 30 minutes. More than half of them covid related. At least put a little bit of effort in your trolling.
I've only been here since this afternoon and posted about a dozen-ish times.
You've taken it upon yourself to stalk ALL My posts and make unnecessary comments on them attacking me.
Methinks YOU are the one trolling. :)
Definitely trying to get your goat and have you out yourself as xtra - hasn’t been that hard. If by trolling, you are referring to fishing, you were the one who suggested it was fun to dangle bait in front of a fellow mgoblogger and see if they bit. I can report back that you did, and it was marginally enjoyable.
You are an obviously previously-banned poster. Worse, you live a sad life and act like a little bitch.
I can't tell if your are pretending to be dumb becauseof a stubborn belief or you really are that dumb.
It may be because the IFR for 15-19 year olds is around .003% and the IFR for 20-24 year olds is around .008% and they made a judgment call that for them personally, the vaccine wasn’t worth the associated risks, both known and unknown?
Im not sure if those IFRs decrease when the overall physical condition of high level college athletes are taken into account.
There are other considerations, though, besides just IFR. How about Covid’s effect on gray matter?
Sigh. Just like myocarditis was only associated with getting Covid.
But now getting the shot can POSSIBLY give you myocarditis at as high, or an even higher rate.
I'll believe these studies that "indicate" something when they do a better "study" than this cherry-picked analysis:
The authors were able to induct 394 individuals that had participated in a prior study at UK biobank and had contracted COVID-19 in the interim and assembled a similarly sized control group matched for sex, age, ethnicity, and time between scans, which was three years on average.
394 people, out of which they do not designate which of the 394 had other issues and were already catalogued in the biobank - vs. using new candidates/results.
Seems sketchy at best.
Seems sketchy at best.
So does a 3-hour old account created specifically to spread anti-vaccine propaganda.
Yep, I agree that a huge segment of the population thinks "COVID's over!"...whether they are vaccinated or not. That's a huge mistake if you're in the latter group.
We're going to see a significant bump in cases this summer. It won't nearly be as horrible as this winter, but 99% of these game cancellations (not to mention much more important hospitalizations and deaths) don't need to happen if certain large groups of people took 1/2 hour out of their day, twice over the course of a month, to get a free vaccination. That's pathetic.
Missouri looks to be first state in the "Oooops...it's not over?" barrel. And in reading stories about it, this jumped out at me:
"We're tired of taking care of COVID patients, and I'm saying this in the best way possible, because the majority of patients that we see now on our unit are -- they don't have to be there," she told ABC News. "Their admissions were preventable."
Med workers, more than pretty much any other group, have been through the wringer these past 16 months and it's not a good situation for anyone to have stressed, understandably resentful, orderlies, nurses and docs taking care of people.

I understand why pretty much all restrictions have been lifted (though universities should absolutely be requiring it for on-campus classes--I'm looking at you U of M and MSU) and am glad to be back playing basketball indoors again etc, but unfortunately most people don't live in Vermont where over 80% of our 12-plus pop is vaccinated. Way too many areas of the country are going to take some significant L's this summer & fall, in terms of outbreaks, that just shouldn't happen.
