META: In-situ ads are not ours (UPDATE: Light at end of tunnel)
UPDATE 6/2/2021: I'm bumping this thread because we have identified some of the issues we've been having with rogue ads in content and the occasional pop-up. They're low-level security breaches from an old version of ad manager's configuration. Rather than patch we're going to upgrade the ad manager to the latest version. It's on the testing site now and we hope to deploy in a week or so. Hang in there with us.
ORIGINAL POST FROM 5/28/2021:
We have noticed cheap ads like these have started to pop up in the middle of our content. We are not serving these ads and are trying to track down their source right now.
Hey Seth, I'd also check your ad provider and make sure they didn't add a new "feature" to their ad inventory automatically.
Sometimes these services will have automated or "smart" ad injection that will add ad slots mid article/container unbeknownst to the site owner unless you manually uncheck the feature. This is very common on Wordpress and Drupal ad services
Oh we're talking to them.
Yea but have you ever had bamboo bedding?
Incidentally, yes. Friend's destination wedding that was very expensive and very uncomfortable.
But how was the bedding?

Underrated post if the day.
I had a pop-up window ad load and take over the page on the site yesterday. The constant loading of the side bar ads are an on-going annoyance, too, with different sizes continually pushing content up and down.
Please give us an ad-free subscription option!
Ad-free subscription option has been in the works for awhile. We wanted to get the "app" version of the site done first because those features are going to be added to that. But I bumped some functionality of the message board up the list, specifically the ability to see which posts are New to you when you're logged in, and the ability to quickly find replies to your comments.
As for some ongoing ad issues, including pop-ups, I had a conversation with our provider earlier this month and gave them an ultimatum to get some longstanding issues fixed. They responded quickly but that response has slowed. We'll see what happens since my deadline is coming up.
The "you've won a Google gift card" page that takes over my screen is a semi regular occurrence. This site and realm.com are the only ones I've been to in the last few years where this had happened.
I'd think that you would be happy enough about winning a gift card that you wouldn't complain about it.
Has a reversion to the old site been discussed or are the powers that be satisfied with the current state of the blog site?
I still can't tell when a comment is new and I have comments that I have apparently thumbs up'd on threads I've never even opened.
FYI The pre-voting is just some sort of visual bug. You can test it by trying to vote on the comment and watching the net change in score. Of course still something that would be fixed in an ideal world, but maybe makes it a less consequential thing.
The old site had major security issues that necessitated the move when we did at the speed we did. I was willing to go to a Geocities site if it meant fixing the server loads and getting us to a top security rating.
Open MGoBlog in Safari with ad blocker. No ads whatsoever.
No ads, but no revenue for content. No thanks, I prefer to support pages I frequent. Subscription seems like good way to navigate this issue.
I say this in every one of these threads but I buy the book and make at least one straight donation to mgoblog every year. So I don't feel bad using adblock software.
Yeah this is fine. A heavy user is about $200-$300 a year in ad revenue, a front-page reader is $150ish. Another way to think of it is 50 cents per front-page article you read through, or message board thread you participated in.
So you’re telling us that Brian is a bazillionaire?
Only if you express his site revenue in boliviano...?
Whoa, those are bigger numbers than I would have guessed. Is that what we should expect to pay if the subscription option comes to be?
I would do this if I contributed to the beveled guilt thing but I don’t so I wouldn’t feel right
I have bamboo sheets. Wife loves it...I don't.
This doesn't help the ad situation, but it's the first time I've been able to vent on this and I feel great.
When your wife is happy in bed you just leave it.
Is that really a thing? Asking for a friend.
Three weeks out of the month, it is.
Wait. Did you mean "deal with it"?
I notice these tend to pop up when creating a paragraph-style space between text when posting. I haven't witnessed them coming about when posting a complete block of text.
I have seen this with some regular posters. I thought they figured out a way to generate their own ad revenue.
Damn those cheap ads. Now, if it was for a Rolex or a Mercedes-Benz or something dignified that would be something.. but bamboo bedding?
Perhaps don't skimp out on the cruise next time...
Honestly with the end of 3rd party cookies, this is the future of display advertising. There's really nothing you can do about this unless you are prepared to change the login state of your users
You mean Mgo isn't taking money from my competitor here in NC just to annoy me?
The ads I see are for penis length reduction surgery. What gives, guys?
Hey, I'd love me some bamboo bedding.
Although I should be as annoyed at Russian mail order brides as the next yokel, you can't deny we've had success recruiting Lithuania/Canada, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Germany, so....
Bamboo bedding can only mean one thing... the election was stolen!
But will Ruskie chickens digest the bamboo fibers?
No, but they will infest MGoBlog with ransomware and charge everyone all of their accumulated points in Dogecoin to release the site from their control.
You've probably already seen this, but I am getting these adds directly in posts as well.
I thought those were weird, but I get pretty put out by the ads that pop up at the bottom of the page and block the text on my not-huge rectangular screen. I don't mind the ads in the column at the right, because they don't block the Diaries and Message Board contents, and can easily be ignored while reading the actual posts. But right now I have "Grand Opening ShopRite of Belmar 1732 Rt 35 and 18th Ave Now Open Learn More." I keep hitting the circled X to close and it pops up again almost immediately.
Besides the bright green leaf that sticks up beyond the top of the ad to block text I might be reading, right now the circled X is blocking Jaeden Gould's playing position in the Message Board contents. (I can, however, successfully read that he's a 4* from NJ.) (Okay. I can also guess that he's a CB. But still...) (And now that I clicked the X and in the split second that the ad disappeared I can see that he's going somewhere else...) (But what's the deal with the green leaf?)
While we're on the subject, I'm getting autoplay ads constantly. To the point where I visit the site far less frequently than I did before simply because of that reason.
Never gotten auto play ads (chrome, firefox, no ad blockers, on either work or home networks). I wonder what determines this.
You might want to run Malwarebytes because we don't serve those. Personally, I have a chrome extension called Disable HTML5 Autoplay because I have to go to ESPN and Rivals all the time and they autoplay everything.
Who doesn't like bamboo bath goods?
When is there going to be an upgrade to the message board?
I friggin' love bamboo bedding
How about the rogue phishing virus notifications?
Just click on the link and they will go away.
