Michigan offers FCS Transfer DT John Ridgeway
Also has offers from Texas, Indiana, Iowa, PSU Tennessee, and Arizona St.
He's originally from Bloomington, IL and played at Illinois St. where he was a FCS All-American selection as a redshirt freshman in 2018 and a all-missouri valley honorable mention in 2019. With the covid year, he should have 2 years left by my count.
Also, he would likely be a grad transfer since he would have gone through 4 years at Illinois St, so admissions wouldn't have an issue with any credits not transferring.
Pretty sad we have to get into credit transfer issues and admissions of athletes, like we're Creighton circa 1987 or something stuck in the stone age.

What is really sad is that we're entering year 7 of harbaugh and we still don't have proper roster management let alone reasonable recruiting at all positions. We should be reloading, not rebuilding.
April 23rd, 2021 at 12:46 AM ^
Very sad indeed. Especially with more transfers on the immediate horizon.
I sure wish you could/would say more
People still think this guy isn't full of shit?
Full of shit is just the half of it. He is also a negative and miserable schmuck
Are the expected transfers all due to lack of playing time/buried on the depth chart situations?
No, not all of them. At least not 100% based on PT. One was Giles Jackson.
Expect a CB to put his name in. Possibly a couple more.
April 23rd, 2021 at 10:33 AM ^
Giles Jackson was probably playing time too though, no? I mean his role was a kick returner. But he didn’t have a big role at WR and was reportedly being passed by others in the slot. Maybe he wanted to do more than return kickoffs.
Transfers are going to happen at almost every school.
If it bothers you so much...go root for Northwestern or Army.
What we need to do is hire a Courtney Morgan type who only focuses on transfers...because that's what it's coming to. And when this NIL stuff happens, it's only going to get worse. Just like the one time transfer rule.
Oklahoma’s transfer numbers are as bad as ours, but they play in the Nickelodeon conference and are able to win it every year so nobody cares.
Most teams in the Big 12 would give us the business. It isn’t a B1G problem why Michigan is not succeeding...it’s a Michigan problem why Michigan is not succeeding.
Preach on, it is sad that people here - a) still walk around wearing their Maize & Blue glasses on thinking our shit don't stink, and b) think harbaugh has done an amazing job!!!!
April 23rd, 2021 at 12:49 PM ^
What's sad is you think people don't already know the shitty state we're in. We. Get. It. And we don't need to be reminded. You're not making any earth-shattering comments by saying "Harbaugh sucks" or get this one... "Year 7 with a shitty coach". Haven't heard that one before. We're in this together, dude.
Fact is most people don't like to dwell on the sad things we already know and don't really care to read about it unless it's something new or has decent context. I highly doubt anyone on here has uttered the phrase "Harbaugh has done an amazing job" since 2018. So maybe chill until you have something of substance to say.
One really bad year that came during the pandemic. Harbaugh is not a shitty coach, but he has underperformed to his own expectations and ours, and for what he is paid.
Calling someone who has coached in a BSC bowl, a Super Bowl, and three straight NFC championships a shitty coach is simply minimizing the good and hyperbolizing the bad.
Stop pretending that your assessment myopically based on decency bias, and though you are welcome to feel how you feel about the future based on it, that doesn’t make it a fact. Thus, this hammering of your childishly reductive view of Harbaugh leads to your mockery. It is as if you want them to fail so you get stuck on the worst possible outcome and just want that to happen. I feel bad for those around you having to listen to that kind of pessimistic blathering on a daily basis.
well said.
I get it coming from Valenti but having fans run Valenti in emulation just to sound relevant is sad.
Exactly transfers are now part of college football and every year you can expect kids to leave and we will add kids from the portal. It’s almost like a second recruiting season
In that case... I choose to root for Army (and Navy & Air Force) and NW. When they are not playing Michigan, that is.
April 23rd, 2021 at 11:45 AM ^
why do you hurt me?
Almost every school in the country is looking at transfers...look around.
There are damn near more kids in the portal than there are on rosters. It's the world we live in.
Trying to figure out why you got negged so much! It's so dang true, but message board fans are the experts!
We went several classes with a total of 2 true DT's taken... Can't understand that no defense works if you can't stop the run with your interior DT's! Can't pressure the qb with all american DE's if your DT's can't hold the poa or push the pocket. But hey, these fans know everything... Can't understand that our DE's were getting doubled every single snap and still getting pressure but qb's had pockets to step into and rb's had lanes to run because dt's got hammered one on one and couldn't hold the poa, pushed out of their gaps and could never get off blocks.
The same fans that said Harbaugh was better than Hoke because of he made 49er players get into the 3point stance correctly.. which btw I've seen coaches teach that several different stances.. which at the time all hail harbaugh cause he was the only one to teach it correctly...

Trying to figure out why you got negged so much!
Welcome to the schizophrenia that is the mgoblog boards. You can post the same statement in the same board and in one spot you’ll get negged and in the other you’ll get upvotes. This blog is a microcosm of society. That first up or down vote usually sets the stage and the mob mentality jumps on board. Why is no sociologist or psychologist studying us by now?! It’s really fascinating.
I don't think that is what's going on at all with the negging of Umbig11.
For years he seemed to enjoy a reputation here as a football "insider". Some on the MGoBoard doubted him all along but not the vast majority, or so it seemed.
Because I don't specifically know nor do I recall the sequence of events on the board that appeared to expose him, I'll treat what I vaguely remember about his "downfall" as an unverified batch of rumors, and therefore refrain from going further down the path of speculation. All I know is that at some point long ago I found myself a doubter too.
I think what now reaps him all the neg votes is his posting behavior and attitude. He now sorta reminds me of the "vindictive jilted lover" Glenn Close character in Fatal Attraction.
NOT a good look on his part and, IMO, a major cause of the negs.

What's sad is that fans don't understand that the portal is a necessary part of building/maintaining any program at this point...
Is Indiana rebuilding? They're at their peak, they still offered.
April 22nd, 2021 at 10:05 PM ^
Or like we're Michigan circa always.
I had credits that didn't transfer, so at least M is consistent, because I certainly did not sportsball.
April 22nd, 2021 at 10:23 PM ^
Because it's a university that still prioritizes academic integrity over touchdowns. Unlike you.
April 22nd, 2021 at 11:13 PM ^
Well that’s good since we don’t score many of those pesky touchdowns.
April 22nd, 2021 at 11:20 PM ^
Given some of the decisions during President Schlissel's tenure, it's a stretch to believe that the university's current leadership prioritizes any type of integrity.
Also, pretending elite football recruits face the same admission standards as regular students is disingenuous. Strict enforcement on transfer credits doesn't move the needle of the university's academic standing in any meaningful way anyways. Princeton is not as hard to get transfer credits to be accepted, and their undergrad academic reputation is superior to UM.
April 23rd, 2021 at 10:35 AM ^
Wow ... straw men, guilt by association, false equivalence. Nice catalog of logical fallacies! Looks like all those transfer credits sure paid off for you at Princeton!

Looks like the young man is cashing in on his talent and hard work. Good for him! Would be nice to see him a winged helmet.
Another transfer?
Pick em up!

6’6” 325
2019: All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Honorable Mention selection ... started all 15 games at nose guard for the Redbirds, who ranked No. 4 in the country in scoring defense (16.0) and No. 1 in sacks (52) … finished the season with 50 tackles, including 28 solo stops, and had three TFLs while often demanding double teams in the middle of the defensive front … also credited with two pass breakups and a forced fumble … posted a career-high nine tackles against No. 1 North Dakota State … had eight tackles and a TFL in the season opener at Northern Illinois … recorded a TFL and five tackles in the season finale at Youngstown State.
2018: Named a FCS Freshman All-America selection by Phil Steele ... I’m sold. Now will he come? He’d look good in blue. Geography might give us an edge. Indiana and Iowa would be other nearby options. But this is Michigan for what it’s worth.
April 22nd, 2021 at 10:27 PM ^
His tape looks to be decent to my untrained eye. Seems to move pretty well at his size and have good instincts. Not sure how it’ll translate against the Wisconsin o-lines of the world but we could certainly use more DT talent, so hope Nua gets after him.
A mature 6-6 325 should be able to hold up against the Wiscy, Iowa, and MSUs of the world. Sounds like he's a brawler type of DT with good hands. That actually should play better in our new scheme since we're not going to ask our DL's to stunt as much.
April 23rd, 2021 at 12:36 AM ^
thanks for the breakdown, we need bodies on the interior period so we can get more talented guys like Hinton out on the edge where they belong...everything about this guy's resume says he's able to play at the D-I level and unfortunately that alone would make him a solid get for UM.
Ah, I see. I didnt scroll trough comments before I posted mine.
6'6", 325

Demanding double teams, sounds beautiful.
He was State champion in wrestling as a senior in high school.
This is what his college coach had to say about him:
"You line up over the ball, you see the ball, the ball moves and it's, 'John, knock that guy into next week,'" Spack said Tuesday during ISU's Media Day. "He likes that. John likes a combative situation. The less structure and the more streetfight it becomes, the more he really likes it."
Go Blue young man. Come home!

This stance shows significant improvement in his hip flex-over his HS tape.
April 23rd, 2021 at 10:13 AM ^
Guy looks like someone photo-shopped a too small head on him.
6-6 and 325? Yes, please.
Given what seems to be the situation at the position, any defensive tackle transfer that can in fact be TWO defensive tackles in a pinch probably should get priority from the staff, however that would work...
Will look good at offensive tackle for us
Whenever I read an offer like this involving a grad transfer I always feel like it's because someone at the same position is leaving.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what we have here.
We are scrambling for bodies. It’s not good.
State wrestling champion=leverage and hand technique FTW. Combine that with a 6'6" 325 lb frame and you've got a solid foundation to work with.
Yes please. Doesn't even have to be a star, just a solid player, a valuable addition from a smaller school. Kinda like an interior line version of Mike Danna.
Danna was underrated as a player and would have had much more production if we had some actual DT's. Played more and put up better numbers than Uche last year.
