One thing that stands out is Illinois’ guards. Miller, Frazier, Curbello and Ayo.

They are athletic, lengthy and made Smith, Brooks and Wagner look like children out there.

Who does M have coming through the pipeline like that?

Flush it. The legs weren't there, and the effort was abysmal. Illinois came out like they wanted this one more and got to every loose ball and rebound. Michigan still would have lost the game but not quite like that. It's not a trend though. I don't look at Illinois and think, we could never beat those guys. It's not like the Villanova national title game where you realize they just have way too much scoring. I assume we won't see another low ebb game like this because we are talking rivalries and tournaments down the stretch.

It's Tuesday, it's fucking early March in Michigan, you haven't seen the sun in two months, you're not playing a rival or a team that is going to negatively impact your tournament seed, it's fucking midterms. (I have no idea if any of this is true)

Everyone kinda took a night off tonight. Sucks.

Michigan looked exhausted when they stepped onto the court. They looked like a team in the middle of a hard run. Nothing was falling, not moving much around the perimeter, even an airballed free throw.

Those are signs of exhaustion. Best thing to do (imo) is to get these guys rested.

I second this point.  Hunter looked the most exhausted of anyone.  And our success has really flowed through him all season.  Probably the end result of hard fought recent games down low and not much rest.  AND Livers and Wagner had their worst games of the season...on the same night.  That all adds up to an ass kicking.

The break they need starts late Sunday afternoon.  Wouldn't be surprised if they split against MSU, which is okay - still going to win the B1G outright.  But not playing from Monday-Thursday will be a big help before the B1G Tourney.  Not really worried about this game, if it gets replayed it'll be in the B1G Championship game - and we'll see a different Michigan team.

They played great defense and completely took Wagner and Livers out of the game. Also noone boxed out on Defense. Forget about it and beat state

Considering how M refocused after the game at minnie, I don't mind the wake up call.  I prefer getting this loss now, though not necessarily how.  It's really the first time everyone has been off since the first L.

illannoy was allowed to bump and push all night.  Their guards were quick.  I noticed that against Wisc Saturday.  And then they couldn't miss from 3, with many shots on the move or contested.

We'll be ready for them round 2, and I'm betting we won't see them a third time.

Wagner was horrible on offense. Passed up more than one wide-open teammate ready to shoot a 3 and instead went in for an awkward drive trying to avoid contact. ugh

You do have to give a lot of credit to Illinois for making things difficult and not letting anyone get going.

But hopefully we got whatever that was out of us. Better now than in a couple weeks. I have a hard timing believing we see that kind of effort again this season. Hopefully we get a rematch in the BTT.

This game pissed me off.  One cuz they destroyed us, but moreso because how does this team beat us this badly, but they can't beat an MSU team that is no where near as good as Michigan.

How does Lidell hit 23 footers with Dickenson in his face then sit there with an open 18 footer at MSU and stare at his teammates like “what do I do now”. How does Cockburn score 18 vs 6’8” garbage centers and dominant vs the 7 footer? The answer is these kids play when they want to. Bigger the stage the more they show up. Michigan is bringing it every night for the most part. I think their coach had them in a lather and Michigan wasnt ready. We will be ready next time. Good eye opener.

Illinois came out tonight and kicked M's tail.

I take it as a wake-up call, and not a whole lot more. Can't come out flat, sleep walking with poor execution against good teams.

But I still think M is the best team in the B1G, and if these teams match up again come tourney time it could be a very different story.

Honestly, I'm not too worried.  Michigan just looked like they had tired legs out there.  I don't think Illinois did anything special to win.  Michigan was sluggish and lethargic the whole game.  There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the team or the coaching (obviously).  We'll be fine.

Illinois' second chance points were off the charts.  That is the story of the game because it embodies the fatigue factor.  The vast majority of loose balls and rebounds went to the Illini.  That is not the Michigan team we've watched all season.  Total aberration.  If we played with the energy we had against Iowa then we probably win comfortably.  Illinois is not a better team than Michigan and I think it will show in the B1G tourney, if we end up playing them.

Is what it is. Gotta give Illinois props. They kicked Michigan’s ass.

Michigan will get its chance to exact revenge in the BTT. All they need to do right now is put this loss behind them and focus on MSU.

Welp. Bad matchup, Underwood had the better game plan and they had 2X the energy. The latter point is perplexing given the stakes.

Better get it out of their system and return to form against MSU. Go Blue.

We're doomed, per usual.

The world is against us.

Izzo has "Michigan right where he wants us".

Michigan failed again in the biggest moment.

Come out and dominate MSU at home on Thursday, clinch the title, and win an easy one at Breslin with MSU out of the tournament picture.

Our guards were exposed today which is not a good sign. We just don’t have enough offense from them.

Dude, negative/emotional in the game thread.

they lost their second game of the year. That’s all. Two in the loss column is not a trend, nor a sample size to compare.

sorry your pride was hurt tonight

Perspective: In the pre-season rankings, Michigan was picked 25th by Sports Illustrated17th by Fox Sports' and the NCAA's Andy Katz34th by CBS Sports and 22nd by Dick Vitale of ESPN.

This team might not be as good as their record and, barring a total collapse in the next three weeks, isn't as bad as their performances in their two blowout losses. Michigan State will be a considerable challenge. They can’t afford to let this loss lead to having three straight losses before the Big Ten Tournament. Soon we’ll see whether this team can recover quickly.
