OT: Indianapolis Colts acquire QB Carson Wentz
https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1362442800344752141?s=19
Traded for a 2021 3rd and a 2022 2nd next year that can turn into a first. A far cry from the Stafford hall a few weeks ago, although Wentz has played poorly of late.
February 18th, 2021 at 11:49 AM ^
Ah, the Hall of Stafford. Tis a grand Hall.
February 18th, 2021 at 11:53 AM ^
Well, shit. Dam autocorrected.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
I must say, Stafford Hall is mighty grand.
February 18th, 2021 at 2:09 PM ^
I wonder if Stafford rented a U-Hall for his trip to Cali?
February 18th, 2021 at 2:10 PM ^
That is my go to answer when I can't sspel ezee ann tufh werds!

February 18th, 2021 at 11:51 AM ^
Damn, how did the Bears not beat that offer.
February 18th, 2021 at 3:38 PM ^
By all accounts, the Bears had a stronger offer on the table, but Wentz was adamant about not wanting to play for Chicago, so they pulled it.
February 18th, 2021 at 5:12 PM ^
Bears didn't want someone who didn't want them it seems, which is also why the compensation is so much less than the Eagles leaked it would be.
February 18th, 2021 at 7:29 PM ^
Bears dodged a bullet, I get Jay Cutler vibes from Wentz.
February 18th, 2021 at 11:51 AM ^
As a Bears fan, I'm OK that we didn't add another mediocre QB. We have plenty of those. Do I have faith that the Bears from staff would do any better with those future draft picks? Nope!
February 18th, 2021 at 11:58 AM ^
I may not pay as much attention as you do, but how much of Wentz regressing from his MVP form was due to him having absolutely no weapons to throw to (or any weapons he did have were injured), and his OL was a far cry from where it was on the Super Bowl run? Not a critique of your point. Just an honest question.
I'm sure he's got something to do with his own regression as well, but his situation also reminds me a bit of Cam with the Pats. Yes, Cam has regressed as well, but you've surrounded him with a bunch of nobodies who can't play at a high level. What did you expect would happen? It just seems to me that Wentz, at least partially, was set up to fail given what he had to work with.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:07 PM ^
You may be right, but it's not like the Bears are going to have any weapons next year either. Or an OL, as both tackles are probably getting cut. I'm not sure why the org didn't clean house this year, since it seems like they're going to next year anyway, but I'm thinking they should just bottom out.
If I were running the Bears I would have jumped on Bieniemy. Why stick with Nagy in a lame duck year when there are other good coaches available?
February 18th, 2021 at 12:16 PM ^
I think the Bears will keep Leno at tackle. He was decent and they've got NOTHING behind him. People shit on Trubisky on the regular, but he was running for his life most of the time. I agree with you on Bieniemy. Start the rebuild at the top.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:58 PM ^
Well, Bieniemy is still available. It seems to me that it's better to stick with a lame duck coach than bring a promising one into a doomed situation.
February 18th, 2021 at 2:28 PM ^
I'd argue that the Bears have weapons but they're not being in position to shine because of bad QB plays from Trubisky and Foles. Mooney is good, Anthony Miller will be good, Kmet should be solid.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:00 PM ^
This is a very good fit for Carson, the Colts are playoff ready. He Wentz to the right place.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:25 PM ^
I graduated with Frank Reich at RTS. He's a solid guy. Wentz probably went to the best place he could have gone at this point in his career.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:39 PM ^
Wentz started to regress when Reich left for the Colts. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. We'll find out.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:55 PM ^
Another MDiv holder on this website, eh? :)
February 18th, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
Yeah, if Reich can't fix him, no one can.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:03 PM ^
In their primes, who is a better QB: Matthew Stafford or Philip Rivers?
February 18th, 2021 at 12:04 PM ^
I'm not sure they're not the same person.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:09 PM ^
And therefore can’t be compared on an internet sports blog?
February 18th, 2021 at 12:11 PM ^
Rivers has more than twice as many children. Matt and Kelly are getting closer though
February 18th, 2021 at 12:35 PM ^
Rivers > Stafford
Better Completion percentage, better YPA, better TD/INT ratio, better passer rating, and better playoff win record.
There is a reason Rivers is an 8 time pro-bowler and Stafford is only a 1 timer and it isn't the extra five years Rivers has had in his career so far.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:54 PM ^
I agree with your choice, but the differences in all those categories (except wins, which isn't a real stat anyway) are pretty negligible.
February 18th, 2021 at 1:11 PM ^
I'd like to add that marginally better in every category adds up to cumulatively better player.
February 18th, 2021 at 1:42 PM ^
You may be right, but the fact Stafford has played his whole career in the worst organization in North American professional sports makes for an unfair comparison. A lot of people criticize Stafford for the lack of winning, especially in the playoffs, and the numbers speak for themselves. However, I don't think any QB could have succeeded consistently in the same circumstances. Would Tom Brady be the unquestioned GOAT if he played his whole career for the Lions? What will determine whether it's been Stafford as the problem or the Lions as the problem, for me, will be how he does these next few years in LA with a playoff ready team--while he still has a lot of good years left. If he has the same failings with the Rams and fizzles at crunch time, we'll know the answer. Conversely, if he puts up numbers consistent with what he did in Detroit and makes some playoff runs, we'll know the answer regarding the Lions organization as well. My apologies for being so long-winded.
February 18th, 2021 at 2:21 PM ^
Are the Chargers that much better of an organization?
February 18th, 2021 at 2:25 PM ^
I don't know how bad the Chargers may or may not be, but I do know the Lions have been inept longer than the Chargers have existed.
February 18th, 2021 at 3:21 PM ^
Looking purely at on the field results, the Chargers haven't been able to get into the Super Bowl since Eric Bieniemy was playing, but they've won multiple playoff games this century and got into the conference championship once. So that's a step above the Lions.
Looking at their decision to move to LA, I'm not so sure.
February 18th, 2021 at 5:39 PM ^
Counterpont: Statts Padfford owes a lot of his numbers to 1) Megatron and 2) Lions ineptitude putting them in a "have to throw in order to try for a comeback" mode a lot more frequently than other teams.
February 18th, 2021 at 6:14 PM ^
@Tuebor, you also forgot the all important stat of publicly blaming your teammates for something that just went wrong on the field (ex. an interception, a QB fumble or a delay of game penalty). Rivers has a large lead over Stafford in this category too.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
Rivers.
February 18th, 2021 at 5:11 PM ^
Honestly if you offered me rookie versions of both id have a hard time picking. Lean Rivers just because we know he played at least at a solid level until 40. If time isn't a factor I think I take Stafford, personally.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:03 PM ^
Man, the Eagles went from the mountain top to falling off the mountain really quick.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:55 PM ^
That's what happens when you use Crisco.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:06 PM ^
That's a good deal for Indy but I don't think it meaningfully raises their chances of competing for a title.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:11 PM ^
Guess we'll see if Reich has a second dose of special sauce for Wentz.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:34 PM ^
Seems like this is the key ingredient in the trade. Indy is banking on some Wentz-Reich magic again.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:45 PM ^
Maybe kept some in the back of the cupboard, but color me skeptical.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:25 PM ^
Seems like decent value for the Colts? A little amusing in hindsight that it seems like the Eagles kept 'leaking' info trying to drive the price up like that the Bears were going to trade one or two 1st rounders for Wentz
February 18th, 2021 at 12:52 PM ^
Brilliant deal for Colts. That is a low price for a guy who led his team to the Super Bowl just a couple of years ago. Is he going to be great? Probably not, but at that price, he doesn’t have to be.
February 18th, 2021 at 12:52 PM ^
There were rumors Luck may come back to the Colts, but with Wentz coming that may not happen.
I want Luck to come to Denver. That would make him the 3rd Colts QB, drafted 1st overall, to play for the Broncos. The first two, Elway and Manning, did very well here.
February 18th, 2021 at 1:17 PM ^
Really? Wow, I actually haven’t heard a word about Luck since he retired.
February 18th, 2021 at 5:07 PM ^
A Twitter nobody made up a rumor that everyone involved has called utterly BS.
February 18th, 2021 at 5:07 PM ^
Luck is not unretiring. Those rumors were all BS. But if he did it wouldn't be to force a trade elsewhere. The Colts might have fucked up his tenure but their supporting cast is great now.
February 18th, 2021 at 1:45 PM ^
Good luck Philly. Way over the cap and now hitching wagon to Jalen Hurts. Sounds like a couple years of top 5 - 10 picks and fun on WIP. If they trade Ertz, what is the added comp if Julie is included in the deal? I'd give up a 2nd for her!!!
February 18th, 2021 at 3:01 PM ^
Im not sure, but I hear the Ram's were willing to throw in another 3rd rounder if Detroit kept Kelly Stafford. That offer was rebuked of course.
February 18th, 2021 at 5:05 PM ^
As a Colts fan, I think it was basically our best bet if we couldn't get Stafford. Do I necessarily believe in Wentz? No. But if he doesn't work out we save our first rounder and try again next off-season.
