CC: scratch Cristobal off the list

Oregon just extended him for 6 years, $27.3M.

Anybody wanna take bets on how Jim's new deal compares?

Our plan was to fire Harbaugh and go after Cristobal? Really? Can we rise up and slay whoever created this plan? If it was your plan Vlad, I'm totally cool with it.

I don't think this is going to be a big year for coaching moves.  Texas retreating and announcing that Herman was staying was an omen.  You can believe that they called a lot of coaches' agents before they did that.

Going to have to agree with other posters below. It's looking pretty likely, especially now after this recruiting class that just signed, that Harbaugh is being retained. I hope he does some genuine reflection of himself and where the current trajectory of this program is at. I hope he guts most of his defensive staff and that his salary reduction allows him to hire the best defensive coordinator and assistants possible. I think there is some well-earned criticism on Jim's part--his clock management is downright awful sometimes, he's definitely prone to some bone-headed and head-scratching play-calling, and I think there are clear questions regarding his player development (most notably and surprisingly at the QB position) along with player attrition.

All of that said, I realize that there's no sense in being a miserable bastard about it all. Jim has faults, but he is a human being and these players are literally just dudes in college that don't owe me anything. I'll pull for Jim and his players, and despite all of the disappointments and shortcomings,  I really sincerely hope they can turn it around some way somehow. What more can I do as a fan? Go Blue!

I think what gets lost in all the negativity around Harbaugh and the program right now is that people aren't rooting for him to fail.  As someone who's all in on Matt Campbell (I rewatched the ISU/OU & ISU/UT games this year and hoo boy, is it fun to watch a less talented keep up with and outwork a more talented team), I would love nothing more than to see Jim turn it around and beat Ohio State and grab a B1G title.  That would absolutely thrill me.  He loves Michigan and you can tell it must pain him greatly that he hasn't delivered on a lot of fronts.

My thing is, it's been 6 years, we all have eyes, we've all seen what he's capable of both at previous stops and here at Michigan.  I simply don't think he'll ever eclipse that 2016 season, and that any more seasons with him at the helm is just wasting time that could be better spent on a new staff that could potentially raise our current ceiling.  None of our rivals fear him, some of his faults (lack of QB development) don't seem to have any easy answers, Ohio State is only getting better and they're already beating the shit out of us.  It just feels more comforting to bet on a new coach whose shown a lot of promise rather than a 7th year of this current regime that seems to have reached its peak with no sign of being greater than that.

But we'd all be happier than hell if he somehow figures it out and delivers some big wins next year with a vibrant offense and good enough defense.

Same here. Well said Homie J. I would add that as a huge Campbell fan, he’s exactly what we need. Don’t want to miss out on a great 41 year old coach for year 7 of something that hasn’t worked. JH is 11-10 in his last 21 games. Just not acceptable at Michigan. I worry in 2-3 years when we move on, our options are way less upside than Campbell or even Fickell.

Yup, this is another major concern for me.  What happens if we go 7-5 or 8-4 next year?  What if we get blown out by Ohio State next year?  The heat on Harbaugh would be twice as bad as it is now.  And now Campbell, currently at the apex of his career at Iowa State, will either be in it for the long haul at ISU given that he's now secured a better contract due to staying, or he'll be repairing another P5 team that was willing to make the switch.  Either way, we've now wasted another year and the promising candidates are off the board.  If people think this year is a down year for candidates, wait til you see how barren the landscape is next year, especially because more teams will be involved in the coaching carousel now that Covid related economic considerations are out the window.

The time to switch coaches is now or never (to an extent) unless you REALLY want to gamble on a motley crew of candidates next year, having to bid against way more teams than this year (pretty much no other team this year wants or could entice Campbell).

"The time to switch coaches is now or never (to an extent) unless you REALLY want to gamble on a motley screw of candidates next year, having to bid against way more teams than this year."

No disagreement there. I don't think I communicated it as well as I could have, but my above post was basically just me coming to terms with the fact that he will in all likelihood be coming back. I'll cheer for him and will always pull for him to succeed, but I agree that they could be taking a huge gamble in retaining him at this point. The decision needs to be made now. And if the administration really wants to change, they had better grab Campbell.
