How Good is Al Washington?
I don’t know enough to know whether the guy is head coach material. I do know enough to know that he’s a young black coach with recruiting chops. It would obviously be very helpful (scheme, optics and recruiting) to get someone to come out from behind the Ohio State curtain and help Michigan beat them. He was here once, they were smart to hire him away, maybe he’d come back.

I think we can shoot a little higher than a linebackers coach who was here for 1 year and left immediately for a lateral move to OSU.

He’s nowhere close to being qualified for this job.
November 8th, 2020 at 8:13 PM ^
Are you sure?
November 8th, 2020 at 3:36 PM ^
Urban f****** Meyer. That's the answer. Everyone knows it. Get out the checkbook. There is no other answer. "Oh he won't come here" go f*** yourself with all your logic and reasoning. Get out the checkbook. Make him come!!!
November 8th, 2020 at 4:23 PM ^
Suggesting Urban Meyer shows a complete lack of understanding for what Michigan is, and who Urban Meyer is. It's like asking my wife if we can invite a porn star to come over for dinner and drinks. The optics are not good, and that's why it wont happen.
November 8th, 2020 at 4:46 PM ^
Please stop with the holy than thou garbage. What Michigan is is a mediocre program that likes to hang on to illusions of the past and the belief that somehow they’re better than everyone. This program has been a shit show since Carr left. Yea there’s been an occasional good year but it’s the equivalent of finding a peanut in a pile of shit, yea peanuts are tasty and all but it’s still surrounded by shit.
November 8th, 2020 at 7:05 PM ^
Carr won a natty. What happened the next year? And the years after??
November 8th, 2020 at 7:23 PM ^
We won 10 games the next year...and the year after that.
November 8th, 2020 at 6:20 PM ^
The optics of losing to what will be a 2 win MSU team and getting pantsed by Indiana and absolutely eviscerated by Wisconsin are far worse than the optics of Meyer.
In fact, I dare say Michigan would be widely praised for hiring Meyer.

Not by anybody with a broad perspective on what is of real value in our society. Hint: it is not college football.
geez!
November 9th, 2020 at 9:06 PM ^
Winning at all costs is what is valued by most in our society.
November 8th, 2020 at 6:30 PM ^
This is something I thought I would never say... Fuck you Mercury Hayes!
November 8th, 2020 at 8:36 PM ^
You are dumb. Period. Exclamation point. The end. Is college football that important in your life? I hope not.
I’m a big fan too but c’mon now.
November 8th, 2020 at 10:53 PM ^
But deep inside you want that dinner guest.

Wouldn’t come here for $10 million a year. And his kind of low life is not wanted here. Even if he wins a Natty here. Tainted. National championships unforgettable? Meaningful? Quick, who won in 2013? Quick.
November 9th, 2020 at 12:20 AM ^
Florida State? I think...
I know for damn sure it wasn’t Michigan.
November 8th, 2020 at 8:27 PM ^
Everybody laughed at the time but ASU made a great out of the box hire in Herm Edwards. Man still has the fire in his belly. Sadly , JH lost it somewhere.
November 9th, 2020 at 7:17 PM ^
Urban is a slimy mercenary. He’d come.
November 8th, 2020 at 3:36 PM ^
Not good enough to be head coach yet. At least let him try his hand out at DC first.
If we’re looking at group of 5 coaches, I’d look at Billy Napier at Louisiana Lafayette or Bryan Harsin at Boise St. Both are out of region offensive minded coaches who could spark some youth and life into the program.
November 8th, 2020 at 3:38 PM ^
So basically the same reasoning MSU used to hire Mel Tucker.
November 8th, 2020 at 3:40 PM ^
Um no just because he’s black doesn’t make him qualified enough to be the head coach here. Let’s not use race as a basis for our coaching search
November 8th, 2020 at 3:45 PM ^
Not the basis, but don't pretend it's not relevant.
November 8th, 2020 at 3:49 PM ^
Yes, but it shouldn’t be
November 8th, 2020 at 3:57 PM ^
Please explain the relevance...
November 8th, 2020 at 7:45 PM ^
"Please explain the relevance."
Sure.
Let's see how well an all-white Michigan coaching staff recruits. You like that staff's odds of pulling in a top 5-10 class?
No?
There's your relevance.
I truly wish we lived in a post-racial society but we clearly don't. Someone pretending otherwise doesn't make him (or her) smart or edgy. It makes him (or her) an idiot.
Furthermore, I want the best coach for the job. It doesn't matter to me if the person is White, Black, Asian, Native American, Mixed, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, etc. I just want to see Michigan win National Championships.
November 8th, 2020 at 8:29 PM ^
You forgot Jewish. Is Marv Levy available?
November 8th, 2020 at 8:57 PM ^
I didn't forget. I included it withing "etc." I could've kept going by adding non-monotheistic religions.
But yeah, I don't give a flying hoot about a person's nationality, race, ethnicity.
I care about only 2 things when judging an individual: competence and character. Those 2 are supremely important.

Change your screen name to “Truth”.

I think a good young black coach is exactly what Michigan needs. Michigan needs to diversify and get someone who can relate to the young black talent around the country. It’s obvious the best talent is black so why not get a head coach who can relate to them. As a 72 year old fan I don’t have much time left (lol) to see a winner.
November 8th, 2020 at 3:57 PM ^
And that’s fine. But just picking someone like al Washington bc he’s black is not the right way to go about it. There’s other qualified black coaches out there. He’s not one.
November 8th, 2020 at 8:45 PM ^
Agree. A sound business decision , not a racial thing. I’m also 72.
November 8th, 2020 at 4:24 PM ^
For a hundred years race has figured into most coaching hires.
November 8th, 2020 at 6:59 PM ^
Evidently there are some people here who don't think black coaches have historically and consistently been overlooked for the sake of white coaches. This explains so much about our country.
November 8th, 2020 at 7:11 PM ^
100 hundred years? Silly post.
November 8th, 2020 at 3:41 PM ^
He could be good one day, but he’s not ready yet. Personally, I want a coach who’s never even heard of the state of Michigan. If we hire another “Michigan man”, you may as well bury the program for another five years.
November 8th, 2020 at 3:42 PM ^
Answering your question: Pretty good
November 8th, 2020 at 3:43 PM ^
OK OK, just asking a question.
November 8th, 2020 at 4:01 PM ^
Hire Mike Hart.
November 8th, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
He may not be ready to be a head coach, but he should be on the Michigan staff. I suspect he’s not already because he, like many alums, criticized Harbaugh when he bad mouthed the education given to athletes at Michigan.
November 8th, 2020 at 4:22 PM ^
Hiring based on quotas seems like a questionable decision when you should be hiring based on skill set.
November 8th, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
At first glance, I thought "Artificial Intelligence Washington" might be worth looking into.
