Agree. Obviously it doesn't work that way, but no parent should ever have to bury their kids.

Awful news, and way too young to pass away. Condolences to his family and friends.

Brutal.... The thing this world can least afford to lose right now is a bright young person with a good head on their shoulders. RIP Ian

I knew him personally and wrote one of his letters of recommendation for UofM. He was a very nice kid and intelligent. Swimming made him happy. He had a lot of potential.

Are you literally doing that? Or just saying you are?
September 10th, 2020 at 9:19 PM ^
Are you literally an asshole or just acting like one?
September 10th, 2020 at 2:29 PM ^
Not that any age is a good one to die at, but much too young.

My condolences to his family and friends.

"We both fought our demons and he was always there to talk. Whether it was our demons or marvel movies we always had good conversations. I’m going to miss him more than anything,” MLA teammate Julian Barrios said.
Perhaps a missed opportunity to educate people about mental health issues, depression, etc. but maybe in time, that can be discussed. In the meantime, thoughts and prayers, etc.

No such thing as a missed opportunity. Things to know:
- The world is a better place with you than without you
- Though #1 never seems to be true when you are in the dark places, it is
- Your friends WANT you to reach out to them for help.
- Though #3 never seems to be true when you are in the dark places, it is
- No matter how bad it is right now, it will get better with time.
- Though #5 never seems to be true when you are in the dark places, it is
- Your true friends rise to the surface when you are in the dark places.
- If you are having ideations (thoughts of suicide), you can go to any emergency room and they will take you in until you can figure out what to do next. I've done it and it's saved my life twice.
- Take your meds. Full stop. If they don't seem to be working, go to the doctor and change them until they do. Meds make it so much easier.
- When your thought patterns start to spiral, stand up and go for a walk. I visualize a white board with nothing on it. It forces me to stop thinking bad thoughts and move forward.

I have nothing to add, but just an upvote didn’t seem sufficient to thank you for posting those. I hope the ripples from that message save someone’s life someday.

^^^THIS... is a really great "set of rules/guide" that can be a useful tool for every parent and loved ones to share.
Thanks so much for posting it, LSA Aught One.

Took a screen shot for my teenage kids. To the best of my knowledge they are doing well but I sometimes wonder if I really know.

Thank you for sharing LSA! As someone who has also been to the hospital with depression, your list of 10 rings as true as ever!

Has it been confirmed that this was a suicide? Both articles linked do not mention anything about cause of death?
No matter what the cause was, it is very sad and I pray for their family's loss. I just hope this isn't jumping to a conclusion based on the above statement.
As a father of 4, I can't imagine the heartbreak of losing a child. No one should have to go through that.

Proud alum of M Swim program, though it’s been so long, I’m no longer so connected. This one has been haunting me all day. Feel for his teammates, coaches, and family. Nothing tougher to go through. Keep it moving men.
