MI Governor opens gyms, pools; organized sports can resume
Basically the ball is in the MHSAA's court.
BREAKING LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Whitmer says Michigan gyms can reopen, organized sports can resume, though recommends against contact sports
— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020
Whitmer is not prohibiting contact sports -- football, soccer, basketball, many others - but releases state health guidance strongly recommending against it
— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020
Essentially, Whitmer is telling the MHSAA & youth leagues & school boards: You can play, but there's a 'high risk' of COVID transmission in contact sports: football, basketball, rugby, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, boxing, futsal, martial arts with opponents
— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020
Also, it looks like masks must be worn in ALL sports and inside gyms, including exercise, except swimming.

Seems fair.
September 3rd, 2020 at 3:44 PM ^
The pressure on MHSAA will be ridiculous.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:26 PM ^
From the official MHSAA Twitter account posted at 3:56p. BREAKING NEWS: MHSAA Representative Council Reinstates 2020 Football Season; Full Fall Competition Schedule Authorized.
Guess they didn’t agonize over it too long. Probably had someone with their hand hovering over the send button before she made it official.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:37 PM ^
It's crazy that the Big Ten with a huge amount of resources to give guys MRIs and hold them out if there's elevated risk, won't play, but no one seems to care that high schools, which don't have the resources to give everyone MRIs, are giving it a go.
Maybe I'm just not hearing it, but are the people that are like, yeah, good, the Big Ten is making the right decision, screaming at the top of their lungs that high schoolers shouldn't be playing?
These two things do not align. The Big Ten is either being way too cautious (likely) or high schools are being way too reckless and since a lot of people don't think the former is true, they have to think the latter is true, right?
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:44 PM ^
School aged kids are at even lower risk than college kids, who are at almost no risk already
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:01 PM ^
Yeah, fuck all the people inevitably making contact with those kids, especially the school staff and family members with health conditions.
September 3rd, 2020 at 8:56 PM ^
Family members and staff with health conditions should stay isolated and protected. Take charge of your own health and stop forcing the responsibility on others. People have kept safe for 6 months, just keep doing what you have been doing.
September 3rd, 2020 at 9:16 PM ^
Kids playing sports are at no greater risk than kids going to class, probably less.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:37 PM ^
Maybe Trump called the MHSAA Commish also???
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:07 PM ^
I tell ya what, he gets shit done! 4 more years!
September 4th, 2020 at 6:16 AM ^
Today, high school football!
tomorrow, destroy the integrity of our elections!
gettin’ shit done!
September 4th, 2020 at 6:29 PM ^
Your an idiot, anybody that’s anti Trump at this point is clueless and blind as to what’s really going on in this country and world. U want higher taxes, Medicare for all, no school of choice, illegals getting free health care and free school = vote sleepy joe

thanks boliver. lots of ear-to-ear grins in the house.
as a humorous aside, we had the avatar twins try out for the soccer team since until about 2 hours ago there wasn't any other allowed sport. soccer is not a popular sport in our house and they'd never played, but i told them they aren't going to lay around all fall like house cats. they agreed without much pushing, but did ask that they could contact all their football teammates to encourage them to join. so the twins and 13 more of my football players tried out, literally twice as many as the soccer coach had ever had try out. guess who won all the starting jobs? yep, you guessed it, all my never-played-soccer-before football players.

Perfect! Multi-Sport athletes for Harbaugh!
September 3rd, 2020 at 3:46 PM ^
I’m pro big ten cancelling the season, but man it makes no fucking sense that basically everything in society is a go except big ten football.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:02 PM ^
Classical musician here. I can assure you that “everything in society” is not a go.
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:19 PM ^
That's a tough break. Unfortunately, I don't see any way around that for a while.
September 3rd, 2020 at 9:00 PM ^
Can’t you play in empty concert halls?
just kidding. I really miss the performing arts.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:04 PM ^
It’s very surreal. Pro sports have had to go through pretty incredible steps in order to play safely. Colleges are half assing it and we are just deciding to no ass it with our youth.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:32 PM ^
parents have been no assing it with our youth for months now. zero social distancing going on.
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:00 PM ^
I think that enough people have decided, wrongly in my opinion, that they're tired of dealing with the virus and are just going to roll the dice in order to feel a sense of normalcy.
It's sad.
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:26 PM ^
It feels like a growing portion of the population has given up caring. I think that basically means this country is just going to let it burn until it runs its course because I suspect there's going to be a lot of reluctance toward taking a vaccine too.
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:42 PM ^
If people refuse to take a vaccine that's tested safe and effective, that's on them and no one else.
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:51 PM ^
Tested safe and effective...all in 6 months or so.
Seems legit.

September 3rd, 2020 at 5:55 PM ^
That is possible when they already have a ton of information on the virus itself.
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:34 PM ^
Hmm...
So now that a lot of the fear of deaths from Covid has subsided (subsided somewhat, NOT disappeared) - attention has now been put on Long-term effects of Covid.
The new fears and risks are what the effects of Covid could be in the long run.
Let's turn our attention to the vaccine.
The rushed vaccine with NO LONG TERM STUDIES ON ITS EFFECTS.
But sure - let's go ahead and stick your arm out for that one based on "...a ton of information on the virus itself." that they learned in 6 months.
September 3rd, 2020 at 8:24 PM ^
Warp Speed! .....except for a few minor asteroid fields, what could possibly go wrong?
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:50 PM ^
You are more than welcome to hide in your home.
Just don't do anything that would make you a hypocrite. Like grocery shopping, getting any food anywhere...pretty much anything.
Life must (and spoiler alert: WILL) go on despite your protests.
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:26 PM ^
What a disingenuous argument. People have to eat to live. They can survive without going to the gym or watching a football game.
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:35 PM ^
They can also survive with not going to liquor stores, pot selling stores and casinos, but of course those store generate taxes so they are okay.
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:42 PM ^
Even better than my reply @mgobob.
Speaks to the inconsistencies and lies I mentioned in my reply, however.
September 3rd, 2020 at 7:10 PM ^
Those businesses should have been shut down too.
Instead, we half assed it, like we do everything else in this country, and 1k people per day are still dying while the rest of the world is moving on.
September 3rd, 2020 at 8:02 PM ^
Not sure how it is around the rest of the state, but in West Michigan , the pot selling stores are very safe with how they are doing curbside service and pick-up.
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:40 PM ^
What a disingenuous reply.
You consistently rail against anyone and everyone who does anything that doesn't fit your criteria of what is "for the greater good".
Your statement of: 'I think that enough people have decided, wrongly in my opinion, that they're tired of dealing with the virus and are just going to roll the dice in order to feel a sense of normalcy.' is, however, appropriate.
Enough people are done with the lies, goal-post moving, pseudo-science that has destroyed the lives of those NOT personally afflicted with this illness.
Enough people are done with being told they don't care about their fellow humans, or that we are somehow less than because of the inconsistencies and lies.
Since you blanket everything by shitting on anyone who doesn't follow your criteria of the "greater good" - my statement stands. Sure, you need to eat to live...
But if you aren't allowed to do anything, because you are petrified by manufactured fear...is that really living?
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:56 PM ^
It's not "manufactured fear," it's respect for something that has killed 190,000 Americans. If people from the top down respected this from the start, tens of thousands of people would still be alive, AND we'd be back to sports.
Instead of bitching about being told they don't care about the people around them, maybe people should start caring about the people around them.
September 3rd, 2020 at 7:38 PM ^
you need to disabuse yourself of the 190K figure. C-19 is dangerous, no argument there, but the numbers include people that either didn't die (see story of a couple of weeks ago, 16 'dead but living' patients'), the idaho numbers that were double-counted into michigan's numbers, or whose deaths had nothing to do with covid. and then there's the CDC disclosure that only ~ 9800 died of covid alone. i absolutely believe that more than 10k have died of covid and that is bad, but you have to know how much b.s. is in the 190K figure, too. to quote the head pathologist at the #2 health system in michigan,'i think it's bulls&*t!'

Sorry, I'm not taking any more information from Mr. Football-Is-More-Important-Than-Old-People when it comes to global pandemics.
Good luck to you, hope you and yours continue to be safe.
September 3rd, 2020 at 7:46 PM ^
If you honestly believe that 190,000 figure is real and accurate, then I've got a bridge in Brooklyn that you should buy.
September 3rd, 2020 at 8:05 PM ^
It's not "manufactured fear," it's respect for something that has killed 190,000 Americans.
Don't you know, according to facebook memes going around, just 6% of those deaths are caused by Covid-19 and there's hospitals that are forging Covid as the cause-of-death on death certification
September 3rd, 2020 at 10:19 PM ^
https://www.livescience.com/covid-19-comorbidities.html
It's just amazing how many otherwise-intelligent people in this country are gullible enough to fall for that 6% figure and claim there's only been 9200 covid deaths, when so far this year excess deaths in this country number close to 230,000.
I pray for the future of my kids, my granddaughter, and future generations yet unborn to my family in this country where so many are so ignorant and so selfish.
September 4th, 2020 at 8:09 PM ^
It’s amazing how many people r stupid enough to believe 180,000 plus have died of covid. Everything from car accidents, suicides, heart attacks, cancer gets named covid cuz hospitals get big money. This is all about an election. The cure has been worse than the disease
September 4th, 2020 at 9:30 AM ^
Thank you for your opinion. You may have had the option to lock away in your house. I havent. Been working in a warehouse with 700 employees since the wuhan hit our shores. Didnt give a shit about then cause i had no choice. America is back open. Always has been with us essential employees .
