A little venting allowed - Best Social Distancing Fail you've seen

Submitted by BlueMan80 on April 4th, 2020 at 1:18 PM

So, most people have had 2 weeks or so to practice social distancing, but it sure must not be registering with some people.  Or, they have a total lack of self awareness.  Anyway, I thought it might release a little collective steam sharing some of the better social distancing fails we've seen so far.

While I've had my share of people stopped in the middle of the grocery aisle staring at the list do some form of mental inventorying as people queue up behind them, these people appear to be a dime a dozen.  Happens every time I'm in the grocery store.

Yesterday, I had to go to my local butcher to get more meat.  I want to support their small independent market, so I'm willing to run the coronavirus gauntlet and extra time.  They use the big paper roll dispenser to get a number to wait your turn for service.  As I was walking towards the dispenser, another lady stops in front and grabs her number, then just stands there and has a lovely conversation with her daughter.  I'm debating what to do and decide the best move may be to just wait her out.  I'm certainly not in a hurry.  A few minutes later another lady walks toward the number dispenser and pulls up short realizing there's no way she's going to stay 6' away from the gab fest going on at the dispenser.  She stands there, shuffles around a bit assuming some motion may catch their eye, must have been giving them a bit of the stink eye at the same time, and the lady starts to move.  But, she moves all of maybe one foot, two if you are generous.  When gabby lady gets her number called for service, she finally breaks the log jam and moves away from the number dispenser.

Oh, gabby lady was also wearing a mask, so that implies some awareness of coronavirus.

She needs to go to Bolivia.

Couple days ago a friend came over unannounced, grabbed a package that had recently been delivered (bare handed) and walked right into our house. My kids couldn't believe it. We've been trying so hard to keep them away from others...

Did anyone see the guy on his paddle board in the ocean by himself get arrested in CA?  He got cut off by a police boat at the pier, cuffed on the beach and charged for violating the governors stay at home order.  Probably a 1000 people on shore doing much worse.

I've had a couple, 2 I consider bad one kinda good

Bad #1, yesterday an elderly couple out walking their grand kids and the grandma was holding hands with the youngest.  Mom and dad were walking behind like it was no big deal.

Bad #2, my mother who is right in the bullseye at 75 with diabetes and cronic lung issues decided to go out and get her meds from the pharmacy.  Sort of minimal risk with drive thru and sanitary wipes in the car.  I was still pissed.  Then find out she stopped at the grocery store because she wanted spaghetti for dinner.

Good, I guess,  walking last week and come up to a woman walking the other way on our local trail, as we approach she walks off the trail 15 feet into the woods.  We kind of looked at her like, ok thats kind of not necessary but then she says without prompting I have two daughters working with Covid patients, they're not telling you everything so I take it very serious.   That kinda hit home.

Drove by the local high school soccer field today and noticed about a half dozen high school boys gathered around talking on the field. Could't help but think if even one of them was asypmtomatic the others would all be carrying home the virus to their families.

My overall experience with young people has been they think its a joke.  Very, very careless.

Most are getting the issues grandma grandpa but aren't seeing the potential risk to their immediate family.  Again, this was packaged to us as bad for the elderly, but they've ignored how seemingly healthy, 20, 30 and 40 year old are getting very sick from this and some dying.

Worst fail I’ve seen: the entire city of Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Quito shut down completely and the national quarantine has been respected there. Few infections, few deaths.

Guayaquileños did not respect the national quarantine. Now they don’t know what to do with all the bodies. So as people die in their homes their families are leaving their bodies on the streets, where they lay for days b/c Guayaquil doesn’t have the manpower to handle the volume.

If you look at the official numbers it doesn’t seem that bad. The official numbers are bullshit. They don’t test dead people for the virus, so many who are certainly dying from it don’t factor into the official tally.

Tale of two cities...

Yeah, Venezuela is the one to really watch. Healthcare system was destroyed years ago, most people there are immunocompromised due to malnutrition...Venezuela can’t even handle diseases like malaria and yellow fever, which should be eradicated. What will they do with coronavirus?

Also, the Venezuelan gvmt can be absolutely counted on to lie through their teeth, China-style, from start to finish

I was in Meijer the other day and there was a woman wearing a mask and gloves.  She was in front of me and taking the same path up and down the aisles so I was able to watch her for a little bit. She was repeatedly touching everything in the store and then touching her face, hair, and adjusting her mask. She was also taking some crackers or something out of her purse and lifting her mask to shove them in her mouth.  That’s a special kind of stupid right there.

I had a very similar experience.   I couldn't avoid the grocery store anymore, so I went yesterday for the first time since before Michigan's stay at home order went in place.

Probably one third of the customers had masks on, and that third seemed to be mostly millennials.  But, hell if they weren't grabbing the tomato right next to the tomato I'm grabbing less than a half second after my original tomato grab.  I think a few of them rode around around in my back pocket for a while.

So you need to wear a mask, but you can still get all up in my business?   It was as strange as it could get.

I work for an industrial construction company.  We have an outage repair and install job at a power plant in Florida with 200 construction workers that were working two shifts. As we get closer to completion are down to a day shift.  Timesheets are manual because of the Covid 19 exposure, we had to remove the hand-punch clocks.  Most of our other construction jobs have been postponed.

We have 44 sheet metal and ironworkers in a shop working 4 10s.

The engineers and designers are working from home.

I work in the office with accounting and administration.  We have 14 staff.  Payroll works 4 10 hour shifts on Sunday - Wednesday.  Purchasing and admin work 5 ordinary 8s.  Accounting works 4 10s Wednesday to Saturday.    I'm the administrative boss, so I'm working 7 10s.  Doing social distancing by schedule shift.

All of us have separate offices.  Our county has minimal incidence of Covid 19, but all of our support staff are essential infrastructure workers.

Missing my church on Palm Sunday.  Will miss our Easter service and brunch next week.

This is from Switzerland.  My son’s last Judo class was on a Friday just before all schools were cancelled the following Monday.  The virus was already a concern, but full restrictions were not in effect.  So the class was 1 hour of the kids basically wrestling each other for 2 mins then switching to a new partner.  In all about 12 kids changing partners and wrestling.  I was thinking, wow this probably isn’t the best idea.  Then at the end I heard the instructor say something (in French). I understood he as asking them not to shake hands at the end of the lesson as normal.  Apparently, my son translated for me, the Federal authority forbid shaking hands for sports, so they weren’t allowed to shake hands... but wrestling each other for 1 hour was fine.

Reading from many of the posts above I get the feeling that

1) it is near impossible to distance at grocery stores. I did experience for myself that some folks attempt to distance at stores, but seems impossible.

2) the shutter at home laws are not 100% effective as some opt not to obey them. I can see this becoming a bigger issue in time. We cannot remain shuttered much past Apr 30

3) people are aware of the COVID 19 threat but think the risks doesn't apply to them.

4) Martial Law is not an option and I hope and pray it doesn't.

FYI: Island of St Maarten on a 14 day curfew of 24 hrs. They had Saturday to get grocery supplies for the next two weeks. On St Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, intermittent 96 hr total lock down. They get about 36 hrs in between to get groceries. This will probably be a cycle for the next few months.

Y'all think it's bad in the USA, these Caribbean Island nations take the cake.
