Why is anyone worried about Harbaugh's extension? If either side was concerned about it it would have happened already.
February 26th, 2020 at 6:12 PM ^
That's exactly what they want you to believe.

Good for him, maybe he can finally win a game in Ann Arbor in the next six years
February 26th, 2020 at 6:58 PM ^
I kinda hope he doesn't.

money that should be going to Sandusky's victims. . .
February 26th, 2020 at 6:17 PM ^
33 people have been paid a combined $118,000,000 by the school.
I know the comeback is "you can't put a price tag on these sorts of things" - and that's not wrong. I lost a loved one to a drunk driver once, so I get the sentiment.
But "give the victims even more money" isn't always the answer either.
February 26th, 2020 at 6:59 PM ^
Oh no you are so right, frames deserves more money for all the HEALING he has brought to ped state!!!
BTW, FUCK ped state and all their delusional joepa loving fans and all the paternos and field goal franklin!!!
February 26th, 2020 at 8:39 PM ^
I didn't say "Franklin deserves more money for all the healing he has brought to Penn State" Please don't put words in my mouth.
(I wasn't the biggest fan of Franklin's comments after the OSU game in 2016, and I think I said that here. Feel free to go search my posts if you so want).

The idea that PSU has the capacity to pay a head coach a contract like that after the NCAA dialed back all of their penalties is asinine.
The program should have been blown up. But the revenue collected from a white out in Beaver stadium is obviously more important.
February 26th, 2020 at 8:36 PM ^
That's fine. There is a discussion to be had on whether the penalties should have been dialed back or not.
But even if the penalties were not dialed back, these would be true:
(1) Today's date is 26-February-2020, the sanctions would have been over by this point anyway.
(2) Penn State football would still have a lot of fans, and a number of rich boosters. They would still have the capacity to pay.
(3) The various victims have received a settlement by the school. What issues do you exactly have with how they have been paid? Do you disagree with the method of payment? Should they get paid in one lump sum? An annuity that pays the victim yearly but is in effect a one-time cost for the school? A non-annuity that is annual payments from the school until the victim's death? Until the victim's great-great-grandchildren are all dead?
I'm not trying to be a dick, but I think the latter questions are valid questions.

Read Brian's "unverified voracity" post today. James Franklin was making less than Mel Tucker. Every agent picked up the phone to call ADs around the country the moment Tucker signed that contract.
Does not apply as much to Harbaugh as he was already getting paid. If anything happens at Michigan, it will more likely be an increase in assistant and support staff pay.
February 26th, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
Yeah, given Mel Tucker, I'm actually surprised Franklin's new numbers aren't higher.
His 2020 total guaranteed salary is (marginally) lower with this new contract, and his buyouts are a decent a bit higher.
Of course, these Coaches renegotiate their contracts every year or two anyway.
(On a side note: I love how Franklin's "base salary" is $500K and his "supplemental pay" is $4.9MM. I need to figure out how to get "supplemental pay at a 10x multiplier vs my base salary" from my bosses)
February 26th, 2020 at 6:36 PM ^
When you figure out how to get such a supplemental pay formula, let me know. I don't mind being part of this grand experiment in the corporate world.
February 26th, 2020 at 6:32 PM ^
Anyone else see from Brian's post that the retention clause kicks in before Jan 1 each year? Seems like a really stupid time to have given he is expected to be in a NY bowl game if not the playoff. Seemed much smarter to have it Jan 31 each year. That way he doesn't coach through the bowl, collect his bonus then leave for another job.
February 26th, 2020 at 8:09 PM ^
Sure, that's smart from the *school's* perspective. His agent isn't going to let that one through.
February 27th, 2020 at 9:24 AM ^
Dantonio's did and he arguably had more leverage at MSU than PSU did. Plus do you think if they had sweetened the bonus by $50K and moved it a month, Franklins team would have argued?
February 26th, 2020 at 6:19 PM ^
Why would we extend Harbaugh when he makes MORE money and has never beaten OSU, which James Franklin has......how about we see what he can do this year and go from there?
February 26th, 2020 at 9:19 PM ^
"Why would we extend Harbaugh . . . ?" Recruiting, and the negative impact of having a HC with an impending expiration of contract.
February 27th, 2020 at 1:56 AM ^
This is always an argument that comes up and yet I don’t understand why. Recruits don’t monitor or care about coaches contracts. Coaches are either fired or retire, their contracts dont just “expire”. Please give me an example of the last coach in the BIG that coaches up until the last day of his contract and then walked out because it wasn’t renewed. Does anyone really think Manuel is contemplating the end of the Harbaugh era? Answer:no.
February 26th, 2020 at 6:24 PM ^
All things considered, who are they bidding against?
February 26th, 2020 at 6:30 PM ^
Franklin has done a really good job at Penn State.
There's a lot of programs who would hire Franklin for big bucks despite the MGobloggers who are convinced he can't coach because Brian said so.
USC, UCLA, and Texas possibly a year or 2 down the line off the top of my head.
February 26th, 2020 at 7:28 PM ^
You just named 3 ADs that have made some pretty bad hires. Shaka Smart has failed at Texas. UCLA basketball is bad and football is even worse. USC is stuck in mediocrity.
February 26th, 2020 at 8:17 PM ^
I agree with you in part--but he really is one of the worst game day coaches in college football. I think if he'd have been average at this he could have beaten Ohio State three years in a row and had his 2017 team in the playoffs.
The good news for Franklin is that he's good enough at recruiting and managing his staff to get into position to make bad game day decisions.
February 26th, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
If Franklin is one of the worst gameday coaches what does that make Harbaugh? Harbaugh is constantly making head scratching decisions.
February 26th, 2020 at 11:25 PM ^
They’re similarly bad.
February 27th, 2020 at 8:13 AM ^
better than Franklin? was that supposed to be a trick question?
February 26th, 2020 at 10:02 PM ^
I read since 2016, starting his 3rd year when he arguably got it going, only Saban and Dano have a better winning percentage. That conveniently leaves out OSU though and possibly Oklahoma. He's had some bone headed game theory decisions, but basically every coach does. It's amazing how many people here thought he was worse than Hoke and has had a horseshoe up his ass for 6 years. It was seen as a negative that he hired Moorhead because surely that's the only reason they were any good. Then they didn't careen off a cliff when he left. Surprise!
Looking at this thread though, maybe some of the criticism has leveled off. Brian expecting a nosedive has looked as off as those 2 or 3 years he kept talking about how MSU basketball was going to tank.
February 26th, 2020 at 7:24 PM ^
Hopefully us. We could use a coach who can beat OSU.

Good coach. He’s earned it.
I’m not mocking a guy who’s accomplished more and brought home more hardware than our own coach.
February 26th, 2020 at 9:19 PM ^
Unfortunately we are less than an inch away from that not being true
February 26th, 2020 at 10:31 PM ^
Still had to win the big championship, so no, we weren’t
February 26th, 2020 at 10:30 PM ^
This is Mel Tucker money. What has James Franklin done to show he is deserving of Mel Tucker money?
February 27th, 2020 at 9:49 AM ^
just your daily reminder that there's no money available to pay players.
