NY6 Bowl Opportunity
Hey All,
Been seeing some disappointing prognostications regarding our bowl fate now that we have been mathematically eliminated from title contention, and the Rose Bowl seems a long shot. But it seems that our chances for a NY6 Bowl Game are being overlooked.
I think the case for a Top 10, 10-2 Michigan team with two top 7 wins, another top 25 win, and two more top~35 wins (assuming we win out) would be very strong for a NY6 Bowl. I’d venture to say that it would be criminal to leave Michigan out of such a game.
But there are a number of teams like Minnesota, PSU, and Wisconsin who will make a similar case. However, none of those mentioned will have a case (especially if 1 loss OSU wins the conference and makes the playoffs) or resume as strong as Michigan’s, not to mention brand power.
IF Michigan wins out, I don’t think you can deny them a NY6 bowl game, mostly based on the fact that that would confirm the team is one of the hottest in the sport at that time.
How does the Board feel about this? Is there precedent for a conference having 2-3 at large bids, or seeing a team ranked 3rd in its division get an at large?
A team with Michigan’s presumed resume just doesn’t match up with the outback bowl.
What are our chances?

Just win.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:04 PM ^
Beat IU; then win The Game.

Beat Indiana
November 17th, 2019 at 11:26 AM ^
If we win out there's 0 chance we get left out of a NY6 Bowl, especially now that Minny lost a regular-season game. I personally would love to see us get a crack at whatever SEC team out of the Big 3 gets left out of the playoff. If we do lose to OSU, however, I think the college football rulebook says that we have to play Florida in a bowl that's in Florida.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:29 AM ^
Orange Bowl against Florida. Got it
November 17th, 2019 at 11:31 AM ^
Nah...LSU and Georgia would the top 2.
This would mean a Tua-less Bama in the Cotton Bowl.
But whatever...this was all cool when we could beat OSU. I couldn't care less about a bowl at this point. OSU is the bowl game. Win that.
But first beat IU.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:35 AM ^
Yeah should've clarified that I was talking about LSU, UGA, and Bama.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:06 PM ^
Simple. Lsugabama.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:54 AM ^
True. Here’s a question though, if by some miracle we beat OSU, what are the chances they still make the playoffs? It would be terrible to beat them and still have them make the playoffs....which I feel could conceivably happen.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:15 PM ^
OSU will still make it unless there's a case for a second SEC team, which I don't think will happen now that Tua is out.
Would be LSU, Clemson, OSU, OU/Oregon/Utah
November 17th, 2019 at 12:40 PM ^
Georgia beating LSU would complicate things a bit
November 17th, 2019 at 1:01 PM ^
If Georgia wins the SEC title game and LSU has only that one loss, Georgia and LSU are in, along with Clemson. OSU has the other spot over any other team, so long as they win the B1G scrimmage title game. Only way OSU is left out is if they lose 2.
November 17th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
I think that's probably true. Oregon/Utah and Oklahoma/Baylor would have arguments as 1-loss conference champions (which LSU would not be), but their losses would likely be to weaker opponents than LSU's or OSU's in the eyes of the committee. Plus, in the case of LSU, SEC.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:31 AM ^
I'm so fucking sick of playing Florida in a Florida bowl.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:43 AM ^
I'm sick of some of our best players at key positions not playing in a meaningless bowl, which as of last season, include NY6 Bowls.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:52 AM ^
If they have to play Florida again, I hope 100% of them don't show up - including the coaching staff.
November 17th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
I'm not sure what you are saying here. Are you advocating the end of bowl games?
November 17th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
I’m advocating for a bowl opponent that’s not boring as shit.
November 17th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
November 17th, 2019 at 3:28 PM ^
Boom goes the dynamite.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:45 PM ^
Because they've played Florida in a Florida bowl once in the past 10+ years?
Last year's bowl game was in Atlanta. The previous regular season meeting was in Dallas.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:53 PM ^
Okay, how about I rephrase it to Florida in the Southeast then. Michigan has played Florida in a bowl game in the Southeast 3 times since 2007. Can you think of any other bowl matchup between two teams that has happened that frequently in that timespan (outside of Bama-Clemson)? If you can then sure I see your point, but I was just running with an ongoing joke that I've seen on here and on Reddit about us and Florida.
November 17th, 2019 at 1:02 PM ^
And when we don't play Florida we play... Florida State! The whole Michigan vs SEC team in SEC country thing is getting old - which was my slightly facetious point.
Since coming to Michigan Harbaugh has played Florida, Florida State, South Carolina, and Florida. That's not exactly a diverse set of opponents. Adding another Florida to that list is a real "WTF".
November 17th, 2019 at 8:20 PM ^
And the locations were Florida, Florida, Florida, and adjacent to Florida: Georgia.
I'd love the Rose Bowl, but I'd take the Holiday Bowl in CA at this point against somebody like Washington.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:27 AM ^
You are way ahead of yourself.
If we the team wins out, they will be properly rewarded.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
Agreed, you state it concisely.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:28 AM ^
They would have a solid argument but unfortunately Michigan can't be greater than 3rd in the conference. PSU (assuming OSU beats them) or 2-loss Minnesota (assuming they win out but lose to OSU in championship game) would get first shot. PSU would be a big enough brand to have them over Michigan. Minnesota is eh. I'm not sure how at large bids work for NY6 games though (as in if conference position matters at all)
November 17th, 2019 at 11:31 AM ^
If PSU loses to OSU (especially a lopsided loss) and we beat OSU, Michigan will be ranked well ahead of PSU at the end of the season. The conference doesn't determine who goes to a bid, the bowls do.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:38 AM ^
The committee chooses the NY6 participants for the non-playoff, non-Rose Bowl games. It doesn’t matter where you finish in your conference if you’re ranked high enough and the committee wants you. The Rose Bowl still has Big Ten/PAC12 obligations.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:43 AM ^
And if Michigan is the highest ranked Big10 team after Ohio State, then I believe they would go to the Rose Bowl, should OSU go to the CFP.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:19 PM ^
I'm 100% down for that
November 17th, 2019 at 2:30 PM ^
Assuming that Rose consideration is even on the table, I'm guessing they take Wisconsin over us, regardless of rankings. UW would have an additional loss (2 to OSU), but they would have a head to head win over us.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:08 PM ^
Rose would be great. It's a great reward and the best bowl.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:36 PM ^
If we win out and a 1 loss osu still makes the playoffs we would 100 percent get the rose bowl bid. We’d be ranked like 7th in the country at that point and potentially hire and definitely above a psu who just lost to osu and a 2 loss Minnesota (I also think Minnesota will lost to Wisconsin too anyways)
November 17th, 2019 at 11:28 AM ^
Sure, I'll go there: our chances for a NY6 bid is solid if we beat Ohio.
But right now just thinking about Indiana.
And even then, heck, I just want us to not get embarrassed by the _uckeyes.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:44 AM ^
Can't tell what letter is missing, C, F or S. Please advise.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:30 AM ^
Criminal? NCAA? I get it. Good one.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:30 AM ^
After the 2016 season, OSU made the CFP, Penn St. made the Rose Bowl, and Michigan made the Orange Bowl. So, there is precedent for 3 teams from the same division in the same conference getting selected. I agree that Michigan would be deserving if they beat Indiana and Ohio St. the next 2 weeks. Those are 2 pretty big ifs at this point. It is something that I think will take care of itself if Michigan ends up being deserving.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:35 AM ^
The SEC East had this last year as well. Bama in the playoff, UGA in Sugar, and LSU in Fiesta. If there are three top tier teams that are big draws the committee will overlook them being in the same division.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:54 AM ^
Lol bama and LSU are in the west
November 17th, 2019 at 12:07 PM ^
Yeah sorry.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:49 PM ^
Florida had an inter squad scrimmage in Atlanta also, if I remember correctly.
November 17th, 2019 at 1:05 PM ^
Good call - I overlooked that.
November 17th, 2019 at 1:21 PM ^
Wisconsin made the Cotton Bowl - different division but FOUR B1G teams made NY6 Bowls in 2016!
November 17th, 2019 at 11:30 AM ^
If UM beats an absolutely ELITE OSU team, which then goes on to win the B1G, I think it's hard to argue that any team deserves an at large bid more than Michigan - even PSU, despite their win over UM.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:33 AM ^
If Michigan is 10-2 they will be in a NY6 bowl, no doubt. Cotton or Orange most likely. Rose if we beat OSU and they thrash the winner of the west and make it back into the CFP.
November 17th, 2019 at 12:39 PM ^
I can envision the Rose scenario. Need to get past IU first though.
November 17th, 2019 at 11:39 AM ^
dont care
OSU is the bowl in my mind and it's here in two weeks
thats the game the nation will care about, that could change our future, recruiting, percepiton ect
only thing that matters, indiana is a glorified preseason game at this point
November 17th, 2019 at 11:40 AM ^
The way it is this year if a B1G team qualifies for the playoff there is only one open spot, which according to current rankings would go to Florida. Our best chance is the rose bowl selecting us over the loser of the championship game and the loser of the psu osu game. Which I think is likely
