I keep forgetting about Iowa... NEVER forget about Iowa!

Preseason Big Ten media poll had Nebraska #1 in the West. Coaches have them #4 in the B1G West behind Wisconsin, Iowa, and Northwestern. But the Coaches Preseason Poll is probably heavily influenced by last year's results and name. I doubt the SIDs are putting much research into this.

USC not in the top 25....
I mean after going 5-7 last year and a crummy recruiting class coming in, I don't see why they should be.
I didn't expect them to be in the Top 25.
The reason I left dots after saying it, is because there's numerous rumors that Urban Meyer is going to be hired at USC, unless Clay Helton makes a dramatic turn around this season. Where's there's that many rumors, they usually turn out to be true. So I I'm more than half expecting to see Urban Meyer at USC next season.
I'm not arguing for them to be top 25 or anything, but while it's true that their incoming class is only ranked 20th, their rising sophomore class was kinda ridiculous with four composite 5 stars and 8 total top 100 players. 17/18 players were 4 stars. I'd think that would be much more of a factor than the freshman class being ranked "only" 20th.
But #1 in ankle flexion
Not till Urban and his 5 star running back get there next year. Let’s see...the shithole that is Columbus or Hollywood.

Not understanding MSU at #20 after last year's season. But ok.
This is a too early poll.
Moo U better hope they have the best damn O Line in the country because if Rocky Lombardi has to come into the game, they won't win it.
Teams with starting QB’s returning typically get the benefit of the doubt vs teams with first year starters @ QB. Unless you have a roster like TOSU has.

Did they go door-to-door and offer a vote for every case of soap purchased?
August 1st, 2019 at 12:40 PM ^
No kidding. Sorry, no politics, but I was going to ask if Betsy DeVos conducted the poll at one of her diploma mills.
Perhaps ScAmway is a good sponsor for a football poll, if you sell for them the more the people under you sell the better your results, in polls the more the teams you beat win typically the better your ranking.

I really wish they would scrap polls until halfway through the season. I understand why rankings are a thing now and all throughout the season, of course - they're there so people will watch the games.
They did. It's called the College Football Playoff poll.

Well, that is what the link you posted is for.

Man if that isn’t a who’s who of traditional powers (and Clemson)
Clemson plays #11 (A&M) and #22 (Cuse). Quality schedule there. Oops I forgot to add Charlotte and Wofford.
I'm looking for an upset, A&M beating Clemson, on September 7.
August 1st, 2019 at 11:13 PM ^
Wofford has Clemson's number this year.

My most underrated: TCU. Finished behind Army in the others receiving votes at #33.
Most overrated: #22 Syracuse. I think this is based completely on last year's final record.
August 1st, 2019 at 12:37 PM ^
Agree regarding Syracuse. Their over/under is sitting at 5.5 wins right now.
August 1st, 2019 at 12:31 PM ^
Probably where we will finish the regular season.

Might be OT within a non-OT thread. But why the hell does the Coaches Poll need a sponsor - does everything need naming rights? And does that sponsor need to be Amway? Kind of diminishes the value of the poll - for whatever limited value a pre-season poll has.

Right, I mean, aren't they just asking coaches their opinion? Doesn't seem like it would have a lot of operating costs that need to be covered.
Well, if you think about it, college football poles are "mutli-level group think" ....replace think with "wipe" and there's Amway.

Why are we ahead of Florida?
August 1st, 2019 at 12:38 PM ^
Because UM is constantly one of the most overrated teams every year.
August 1st, 2019 at 12:48 PM ^
This meme really doesn't stand up. During Harbaugh's tenure aren't we 2-1-1 for overrated, underrated, exactly rated correctly?
August 1st, 2019 at 12:57 PM ^
Notre Dame has to be the most overrated team every year.
Depends what time-frame you're referring to
Basically, the last 150 years. ;-)

Good spot.
Texas, A&M, Wisconsin, MSU too high.
Missouri too low.
August 1st, 2019 at 12:44 PM ^
MSU at 20. Early schedule is easy so I'm starting to reluctantly buy-in with their seniors on defense. They won't sniff the championship game and I'm not sure they'll end up ranked much higher than this by November.
August 1st, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
Honestly surprised Staee is ranked. Will be interesting to see if they can sludge fart their way to 10 wins or if things are finally catching up to Dantini.

I notice from following these last couple of decades that these College Football pre-season polls heavily favor teams that have returning QB. As they mostly should, but just some something I notice in that they often don't take much in to factor on other players a team may lose.
And Clemson will have their QB for 2 years yet.
Though since they lost 3 starting D linemen, very good D linemen, In don't think they will end up #1.
How many of the three they lost were suspended for the championship?
Ding Ding Ding we have a winner.TOSU is the outlier to the prerequisite of a returning QB and Head Coach. Shows respect for the Coach Day and the great staff he put together.Probably different if he wasn’t the interim HC for 3 games and the fact they turned a first year starter into a heisman candidate.

Pretty good, considering Harbaugh is not a voter but Dantonio, Day, Franklin and Frost all are. We do have Loeffler in there, though.
I'm going to hold out for the Confederated Products Coaches Preseason Poll.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think State's ranking is pretty much fine. Dantonio gets about one more year on his benefit of the doubt clock, their defense is top 5 and will keep games close that maybe shouldn't be, last year they probably weren't as bad as they played given all the injuries. Their path to 8 wins, which would put them at about 20 in the poll, is pretty believable.
When you play a team in the preseason Coaches' Top 25, is it considered a big game?

Only if you lose.
Now, if we all sign up and sell dietary supplements to our friends and neighbors, does Michigan rise in the polls?
